Crusader '41 Axis options

Post by jivemi »

After three tries against an Elmer Commonwealth the Desert Fox [8D]is stumped [&:]. Tried attacking Tobruk but was rebuffed easily, while attempting to trap a Commonwealth spearhead around el Gueitenat only resulted in burned-out units getting overwhelmed by a resurgent and steadily reinforcing enemy. Perhaps the combat system is still too much of a mystery, or maybe I'm trying too hard to replicate Rommel's strategy of defeating separated XXX Corps armored brigades in detail.

There are a few AAR's on this scenario available on the web--the strategist, armchair general, gamesquad, etc. What I've gathered is the Axis have a rough time of it, generally being obliged to hunker down in "rugged defense" to prevent a breakout from Tobruk or the loss of Sollum and Bardia. That's not exactly what I had in mind when playing the Axis.

So what can Axis forces do in this scenario besides defending or making an all-out assault on Tobruk? Is there any way to mimic Rommel by executing deep stabs in the enemy rear areas without getting trapped and annihilated?

Thanks and happy gaming!

There are ways to improve the scenario; I played it recently PBEM and done an OK job as Germans. Historical result with some twists and surprises for my opponent. First, the Attrition Divider and the Maximum Rounds Per Battle need to be adjusted AND I highly recommend it to be played with the 3XBb.exe un-official patch.

Drop me a line and I link you to both the adjusted .SCE and the patch.
