Adding Text to Map?

Post by Werewolf13 »

Is it possible to add text to a map location. In other words name a city or airbase so it is visible on the map without having to hover over it?

If so how?

Thanks.

You can add a reference point at the desired location of the text and then rename the reference point to whatever you want the "label" text to be. It's not an ideal solution but there doesn't seem to be any other way, currently, to add labels and such to the map. The ability to add a dedicated, non-deletable label would certainly be nice, as would the ability to add persistent range circles and other various marks to the map.

Can't seem to rename reference points.

I select the RP. Press <R> and up comes the rename form. Type in the new name. Hit OK and the form goes away. RP retains original name.

Works for units but not reference points.

What am I doing wrong?

Make sure one reference point is selected.

Mike

I select the RP - I press R - I fill in the form - I press OK on the form - the RP does not change name.

Only one RP is selected.

If everyone else can change an RP name then I must be leaving out a step. But what?

Werewolf, I tried to rename RP in B500 and it worked fine.
My step was
1. add new RP
2. deselect all RP
3. select RP that I want to rename, press R, fill name and OK
4. renamed RP

Werewolf, you probably do have multiple RPs selected and don't realize it. I've had this problem too. The way to deal with this is to de-select all reference points under the Missions + Ref. Points menu.

Someone in Baloogan's chat mentioned that adding labels could be done using custom layers. I spent an hour building a tutorial on how to do this but the forums ate my post because they hate newbies and apparently I'm not allowed to post links to images yet. Booo!

Here is the quick and dirty: Create a static file using the Gmap utility. Edit the .png file this creates in an image editor. Gimp is free and is what I used. Add labels wherever you want them to appear, then hide the base layer. Save the resulting file, either overwriting the original .png or using a new file name. If you use a new file name, be sure to rename the .pgw file to match the new file name. Import your new custom layer and then drop nukes on whomever angers you. Enjoy.

Maybe I can add a link to the results as code?

I got it figured out.

The key is nothing is selected, nothing. Neither units nor RP's except the RP you want to rename.

That said using an RP to put text on the map is kind'a well - useless. It must be selected to show the text. There are actions that require nothing to be selected - like say setting an area to relate back to a unit and rotate as it turns. At which point the RP no longer displays text and must be reselected to show it. Is a player who didn't put the text there gonna reselect the RP to see the text. Ehhhhh??? Probly not.

Not sure whether you're addressing me or not but just in case.

Thanks for the help to all three who responded. Having a senile moment I guess. As I stated in post 8 - got it figured out thanks to the responses.
