Close to buying - question

Piercing Fortress Europa is a new game from veteran game designer Frank Hunter, which covers the campaigns of the Western Allies from July, 1943 through the end of April, 1945 in Sicily and Italy. Each area has its own map and time scale to best represent the campaigns for Sicily and Italy and the player is offered complete freedom, limited only by a historical order of battle and logistics model, to plan his operations and explore all of the many “what ifs” that the Italian theater has to offer.

Close to buying - question

Post by TheGreatRadish »

Hi all,

I've been watching this one for a while, I very much like the look of the system and the Italian campaign is one I find interesting.

I'm highly likely to buy, just wanted to clear one thing up though - forgive me if the question has already been asked and answered but I haven't been able to find it. How is the modability? Is there any scope for modding the map and the units so that other campaigns/theatres might be represented? It's no deal breaker, just wanted to know exactly what I'd be getting.

Frank can get into the details, but from what I know the map and counters can be modified, but I'm not sure if they can be modified for the purposes you have in mind. Modifying counters and the map for the existing game is definitely possible, but creating a new map and counters to represent other campaigns/theaters is something I'm not sure about. It sounds like you're asking if this game can be modified to create a new game, right? I think only Frank will have the answer to that question.

Thanks zgrant. Yes, basically I wondered whether the potential is there for this to be a system that might spawn other Western Front maps and scenarios - I realise that Eastern Front/Middle East is probably beyond it.

Like I said, it's no big deal, I saw the comments from Frank about sequels (France 1944 almost ready for playtesting [8D]) and that's more than enough to keep me happy, particularly if North Africa is involved somewhere down the line. My main reason for asking is that my wargaming buddy is much shorter on time and patience for learning new systems than he used to be these days. Would it be fair to say that PFE is a pretty 'easy' game to pick up and play out of the box, simple mechanics and a not so scary unit count? If that's the case, I know I might be able to persuade him to buy such a title and play with me (WEGO is something we both like a lot), however, I know that one of the first thing he will ask is how likely it is to have additonal scenarios and maps in the future. I'd like to give him an honest answer to that.

PFE is perfect for someone that likes to play but doesn't have tons of time. It is easy to pick up and the unit count is very reasonable.
My understanding is that there will be at least one more game in the series but I'm sure Frank and Matrix want to see how this one sells.
There isn't an editor to the game so I'm not sure how much modding one can do.
