Norway??

Has anyone ever done a Norway Campaign? It would seem to offer a lot of variables, strategy and potential for a linear campaign with minor or DV branching. It used parachute troops, traditional naval landings, partisans, commandos, ski-troops and traditional army (German, Norway and British) units plus has all types of terrain and weather. Heck, I can even see a great scenario on destroying the German heavy-water facility just like in the movie!

Anyone take on this project in the past? If not, why not? It seems like it would be a great camapign...

Don't forget the French and Poles.

BTW Just wondering... in the film, (haven't seen it yet

) of what nationality were the commandos who raided the facility?

I know of two films about the sabotage at Rukan. One mediocre American called "The Heroes of Telemark", and a ok Norwegian one called "Kampen om Tungtvannet" (The figth for the Heavy-Water). Whereas the American move has some good actors,and better special-effects, some of the commandos in the Norwegian movie are played by themselves.

The history channel had a documentary on that mission, including interviews with the participants. Additionally, it covered the sinking (by sabatoge) of a German ship transporting heavy water from Norway.

Hi Odin: I believe they were British. All I can remember in the movie was a bunch of guys that tried to blow up some factory that produced heavy-water. I have not read anything on the history other than general information. What role did the Poles and French play?

The French and Poles did participate in the figthing, especially around Narvik. The French also sent to companies of tanks, R-35, I belive.

Well actually it was norwegian commandos (with good knowledge of the local terrain) trained in Britain. Partly true, in other words

Don't know about the ones in the American flick though.

Oh BTW on Norwegian scenarios... there was a base called "Bear West" up in northern norway (forgot the location...) where a bunch of norwegian UK-trained commandos trained local Milorg (resistance) boys. Eventually numbered 235 men in a "regular" unit, and resisted an assault by 800 gebirgsjegers (or alpen? someone correct me

) by the end of the war. The Germans throughout Europe surrendered in the middle of the fight.

There was also an american commando battalion... 99th Infantry (independent). The prerequisite to join (all were volunteers) was that you would have to speak Norwegian

(BTW what was that regiment of japanese-americans? 333rd? Ah my memory...

)

The Americans organized it with an assault on Norway in mind... When COSSAC decided that Overlord should take place in Normandie, they followed Bradley's forces in the 2nd wave I think. Were never used as special forces.
They spoke norwegian within the battalion... until one night when they were digging trenches in a hill in Normandie. Recon patrols from other units thought they were germans, so they lined up the arty on the hill... luckily they asked before they shot

After that episode, english was to be spoken

Thanks for the information. I received a number of emails asking if I was consider making a campaign around the German invasion of Norway. Not sure if I know enough to develop a good campaign. I think I will start my research and see if it makes any sense. Again, thanks for the info.

n the very old days of SP1 Novastar published a series of Noray scenarios based on T. K. Derry's book "The Campaign in Norway", a volume of H.M.S.o's History of the Second World War.

I borrowed from it to produce my "Battle for Otta" scenario, which I refined with information taken from "The History of the Green Howards".

I would have liked to produce more Norway scenarios, but I've beenawful busy at work lately, so much so that I haven't even had time to participate in the forum as much as I used to.

Looking forward to Version 5.
