ORIGINAL: Xargun

I also laid mines at the small base south of Yokohama as allied subs are prowling right off the coast. I have stationed an ACM there to maintain them.

Make sure you have fuel at the base, without fuel your ACM will not be able to maintain the minefield. Do those dot bases even have a port? If I understand the manual correctly the ACM needs to be disbanded in a port with fuel to function.

Correct as I know it as well. Pretty sure that I have not done that and had the ACM run out of fuel and stop working ...

PS: for a Tosu ACM you don't need much fuel. 100 tons will a long time ...

Well... If Combined Fleet is still at Kure, then those dot bases might be in range, yeah? Even with a size 0 port, a handful of Nav Supp should be sufficient to keep one of those small ACMs fueled.

India:

Over 1500 AV of my troops are in the jungle tying up roughly 1200 AV of allied troops. We have been like this for a couple weeks with little chance of either side pushing the other out for the forseeable future. Time for the Flanking attack.

I have 120AV of paratroopers prepped for Diamond Harbour. Unless Rob has heavily reinforced the port I should take it on the first wave of troops. Over 120 transports are set to drop the paratroopers into Diamond Harbour from Magwe and Akyab. Once the paratroopers take the base, I will land the 5th Inf Div as backup and march on Calcutta. As this happens, another paratroop unit will invade Rangpur (dot base) cutting the rail between Calcutta and the bulk of the allied troops in Southern India (Northern Burma). This will isolate everything along the rail in Southern India from Chittagong all the way to Ledo.

At sea is a bombardment TF who will hit Diamond Harbour the same turn as the paradrop, and the 3rd Car Div which will suppress the airfields at Calcutta and provide CAP to the reinforcement TF.

As soon as I drop off the 5th Inf Div the amphib TF will return to Rangoon where they will load the 18th Inf Div and deliver it to Diamond as well. Between the 5th and 18th I should have the firepower to take Calcutta.

Rob is using medium bombers to hit the airfield at Cox's Bazar and despite losses on his size he is slowly closing the size 2 AF. My zeros take a good toll every attack, but they are not enough. Oscar sweeps over allied troops in the jungle are netting me Hurricane and Warhawk kills as the manuverable Oscars are bouncing the enemy fighters.

Java:

Java is mostly mine now. Only the mountain fortress at Bandoeng and the island base of Pamekasan remain in allied hands. The bulk of the troops here are moving to Soerbaja for transport - 2nd Inf Div and 16th Guards Rgt will be heading to Australia to help with the push on Katherine.

Soerbaja Harbor has been cleared of mines, and subs are rebasing out of here.

Australia:

I have 2+ Divisions now in northern Australia - the main force to the east (next to the river) engaged with 650 AV of allied troops, with the rest to the west of it engaged with the 3rd Army Tank Brigade. As soon as the last Regiment moves across the river I will have another full division engaged with the 3rd Army Tank Brigade and I will attack and hopefully push it aside and then reinforce the main body. Once the new division arrives, I will attack and should be able to push back the allies.

Base Forces at Wyndham are expanding the airfield and supporting a sentai of zeros and Sonia which bomb the allies daily without opposition.

My main goal for Australia is Wyndham, Katherine and Darwin. Possibly Daly Waters as well as that will provide a nice buffer between the allies at Tennant Creek and my troops to the north.

North Pacific:

Another small TF of ships was spotted moving to Dutch Harbor but my subs can't seem to catch them. In another week or so I will send the mini KB to visit the islands and see what I can sink. I will need to beef up the fighter strength on them before they leave port though.

China:

I have pushed the survivors from Changsha all the way back to Chikiang. They are beat up and not really combat effective. When my troops arriving it would not surprise me if the shock attack crossing the river pushes them out. They should flee west towards Kweiyang as I have troops to the east attacking Changteh.

At Changteh there is roughly 670 AV of chinese troops. I only have 1200 AV so I need to be a bit careful here. The bombardment attack gave me their numbers and a deliberate attack is coming.

Wenchow -- I think I will completely destroy this place once I capture it. I am still pounding away here, and finally removed the last fort. Roughly 450 AV of exhausted chinese troops remain - I'm not sure how they can keep fighting... all they have left are rats and rocks. I'm not waiting to swap out troops and am pushing the attack with the 820 AV I have in place.

Navy:

Ship Construction:

CV Unryu Jan 7, 44 (Accelerated) Should arrive around July-Aug 43
CV Amagi Feb 1, 44 (Accelerated) Should arrive around Aug-Sept 43
CV Katsuragi Mar 28, 44 (Accelerated) Should arrive around Aug-Sept 43
CVE Kaiyo Feb 20, 43 (Accelerated) Should arrive in Jan 43

CL Yahagi Apr 1, 43 (Accelerated) Should arrive in Jan 43
CL Sakawa Aug 21, 44 (Accelerated) Should arrive in Apr 43

My Naval Stockpiles is roughly droping 50 points a day so I'm doing good. I have the majority of my Naval Yards sitting idle while I chew through my stockpile of points.

General Ramblings:

Lots of US subs prowling the waters from Formosa to Japan. Taking a lot of my time to try to figure out their patrol routes and move around them. I may just say screw it and lump them into large convoys with lots of escorts and just go straight to the ports. Not sure if thats a good move and stupid so I haven't done it yet.

I have lost contact with his CVs again - last see in the south pacific near Norfolk Island. My CVs are siting in Yokohama port doing nothing as I have no target for them. As soon as I get wind of his CVs they will go forth in an attempt to engage.

I tried to put some pics I made into this post but cannot figure out how to do it. Anyone know ?

India/Northern Burma:

Well I tried my gambit for Calcutta and failed. My air assault on Diamond Harbour worked fine and my paratroopers took the base easily and I landed the 5th ID the next turn, but I failed to realize and block the rails into Calcutta. The turn after I landed the 5th ID and started marching to Calcutta, the number of units and size at Calcutta trippled. There must be a lot of units in India that I did not count on - I figured the bulk of his forces were tied up in the Cox Bazar - Chittagong area, but I was wrong. Rob also turned his air power on me and dozens of medium and heavy bombers started bombing Diamond Harbour right after I took it. My LR CAP were not able to prevent them. I called the gambit a loss and have since managed to withdraw about 90% of the troops that took part in the Diamond Harbour invasion. The bulk of support troops from the 5th ID were left behind and destroyed by an attacking Indian division.

I also have a portion of another airborne unit runing around in the area near Dacca with several allied units chasing them. I have no way of getting these men out, so I will try to cause as much damage as possible before they are hunted down and wiped out. This unit made it as far as Dacca and was annihalated by enemy troops.

I am pulling the bulk of my armor out of the Cox Bazaar quagmire and moving them back to Rangoon. They will rest, replace losses and then spearhead my cross country attack from Shwebo north to the enemy dot base of Kalemyo and then Imphal. The goal here will be taking the bases along the trail and rail - imphal, Kohima, Dimapur, Jorhat and Ledo. If Rob decides to fight here he will need to pull troops from the Cox Bazaar area which may allow my infantry to push out of the jungle and threaten Chittagong. The tanks are not much use in the jungle anyways and this will probably be my last push in Burma / India. If this fails I will fall back to my bases and simply await the eventual British push.

Ki-44-IIc Tojo have made an appear in the skies in Burma and so far they seem to be holding their own against british medium and heavy bombers. I am purposefully avoiding mixing it up with Rob's high altitude Hurricane sweeps and using the fighters to LRCAP supply transports and against low flying bombers. So far it has been working - with bombers being shot down with little to no losses on my side.
Rob seems intent on closing the airfields at Akyab and Cox Bazaar but using LRCAP I am preventing the bulk of his bombers from hitting the targets and my engineers are slowly repairing the fields.

Java:

I have expanded the refineries at Soerbaja to 190 (from 170) so all oil produced there will be converted into fuel for local use. This will save me from having to haul both fuel and oil back home from there. Now just fuel will need hauled. Over a thousand AV of troops still sit in Soerbaja awaiting transport to either Australia or Burma. I have a lack of transports in this area and moving them is slow going.

Timor:

I have built up Dili to a size 4 airfield and am moving in an Air HQ, then I will be basing bombings here and at the size 4 AF I have built at Saumlaki. These bombers will support the northern Australi invasion as much as possible and begin some softening of targets in Darwin.

The 4th Guards Division has successfully landed at Koepang and will being assaulting the base. I hope to conquer the base before the end of Dec 42.

Australia:

I overextended myself a bit and some Australian tank units flanked me trying to cut off the trail to Wyndham and to take the base. The base resisted the first attack and thats the only chance they had - the 6th Guard Division is now at Wyndham and moving out. The 3rd Army Tank Brigade was destroyed at Wyndham in the attempt. I now have the 65th Brigade at Wyndham recovering its strength while the rest of my forces push east.

The 15th Garrison Unit is pushing SE to decimate another allied unit near Wyndham. The 6th Guards Division will head east toward Katherine.

At the river crossing (hex 73,129) a single enemy unit sits on my side of the river and 500 AS will be attacking it this next turn. The 4th Division is pushing across the river 1 hex north and will run right into an enemy unit and should push it back towards Katherine. Once the 4th clears its landing zone, it will move south and join the 48th ID's group as it crosses the river and attack the main enemy formation in hex (74, 129). This appears to be the main resistance between my divisions and Katherine.

North Pacific:

A couple allied TFs were spotted heading into the Dutch Harbour area, so I sent out mini KB to deal with them. I think I finally realized how worthless the mini KB really is. I spotted 1 CLAA, 3 DDs and a dozen APs. Over a couple attacks with Kates, I hit 1 DD and 2 APs - nothing sank and everything else was a miss. Mini KB just doesn't carry enough planes to do anything effective.

Mini KB has since retired to Japan to await its fate - remove air groups and sit the CVEs and CVLs out the rest of the war or turn them into pure mobile fighter bases.

Sub-based Glens spotted some enemy capital ships east of Dutch Harbor and have thus far engaged and sunk 2 enemy CVEs - Prince William and Nassau. Confirmation was via aircraft loss screen. I believe both of those CVEs are replenishment CVEs which means there are real CVs in the area.

KB has moved from Yokohama, danced around the sub infestation, and is sitting in Etorofu harbor along with its escort. I have removed all Vals from the CVs and am replacing them with enlarged Kate and Zero (A6M5c Zeros) units. With the extra fighters I should be able to protect my CVs from any real harm even though I may not be able to strike hard - I would rather keep my CVs in working order and do some damage then sink his CVs and lose mine. My CVs are more valuable afloat than killing his.

Once the air groups have filled out (with planes and pilots) they will go CV hunting.

General Ramblings:

My placing of mines at Izu Oshima and Miyake-Jima seems to have paid off. Since the mines were placed I have heard at least 3 mine hits during turn resolution. It doesn't seem to have sunk any enemy subs, but a mine hit will surely send them home for a month or two for repairs which is almost as good. I am guessing Rob also forgot to set Do Not Retire on a lot of his subs because as soon as the bulk appeared and alot of them disappeared - my guess is the reached station and turned around and went home - all the way back to Pearl. I have detected another large rush of subs approaching Japan so it makes sense. Bet this time they are set correctly.

Multiple times aturn his subs are attacking my escorts of merchies but luckily either 1 torp only hits or they are dudes and nothing is harmed. That will soon change in less than a month as all of his subs magically get working torpedoes. Just hope my counter measures will prove to be sufficient in keeping resources and oil/fuel flowing to Japan.

Jan 17th, 1943

Its been over a month of game time since my last post and a lot of things are happening.

Economy:

Aircraft R&D Update:

A6M5c Zero is in full production with 4 factories pumping out 7+ per day (3 size 60 and 1 size 30)
Ki-44-IIc Tojo is in full production with 5 factories producing 9+ per day (4 size 60 and 1 size 30)
Ki-49-IIb Helen is in production with 4+ produced per day (4 size 30)

A7M2 Sam is ETA 6/45 (5 factories repairing) - don't remember my final version off hand- notes are at home
B6N2 Jill is ETA 3/43 (2 size 30 factories plus 1 still repairing)
D4Y3 Judy is ETA 1/44 (5 size 30 factories)
G4M2 Betty is ETA 1/44 (3 factories repairing)
J2M2 Jack is ETA 5/43 (3 factories repairing) - don't remember my final version off hand-notes are at home
J7W1 Shinden is ETA 12/45 (2 factories repairing)
Ki-100-I Tony is ETA 1/45 (2 size 30 factories)
Ki-61-Ib Tony (4 factories repairing) - will convert to Ki-100-I Tony as final version
Ki-49-II KAI Helen is ETA 5/43 (2 factories repairing)
Ki-84a Frank is ETA 1/44 (3 factories repairing) - will convert to Ki-84r Franks as final version

War Material Stockpiles:

HI: 439,541 NS: 3,806 Jap Points: 26,631
ARM: 128,444 MS: 868 Allid Points: 7,516
Veh: 20,993

HI has increased by nearly 200k in one month game time. I think I have found my HI bank stride and stocking it away nicely provided I can

keep the resources flowing to Japan. Tracker's last report was that I have 380ish days of Fuel in Japan but only 28 days of Resources.

The struggle will be keeping resources flowing against Rob's sub offensive.

India/Northern Burma:

I have dropped all plans for further northbound moves in India. I am intent on holding the line as long as I can now. The RAF has been picking up the pace of its fighter sweeps (Hurricanes at high altitude) and medium bombers all over the place. Rob is conducting raids of 40+ bombers at a time on my northern airfields and the oil center at Magwe. I currently have 3 Navy and 3 Army fighter groups in Burma defending my bases and they are doing a great job - I just don't have enough to completely stop his larger raids, but he is lossing 10 or so bombers per large raid to 0-1 fighter losses of mine. His high altitude sweeps are coming down to 15-20k to dogfight my Tojos and I am keeping the upper hand. The armor on the Tojos seems to be helping to keep my pilot losses acceptable as well.

I am currently sneaking in supplies to both Cox and Akyab using small 2 xAKL TFs and moving out critical units from the front line. I am withdrawing all my tank units from Cox and will keep them in Rangoon to use on the open terrain once he begins his push from the north. They are about useless on the attack in the jungle.

I am building up the bases in the open area along the rails - Magwe, Mandalay, Shwebo and Meiktila. Increasing AirFields to at least size 4 and building at least level 4 forts - will probably try to hit 6 on forts. Trying to get enough air fields that when he closes one I can move to another and keep fighting.

I am moving another half dozen base forces into the Burma area to help build bases and provide more AV spread around so my planes can switch between bases to avoid destruction.

I will try to hold onto Cox and Akyba as long as I can and am not expanding anything there except forts. Air Fields are at level 2 and will stay there.

Malaya:

The arrival of Militia units here have freed up some more units to send into Burma and Georgetown to secure my flanks against future British aggression. Singapore has turned into a simple port for upgrades, repairs and gathering of oil and resources for transport back home. Small TKs and AOs (8k ton size) haul fuel and oil from Palembang to Singapore (due to Palembang's small port) and then the larger 10k+ ships are hauling it home to Japan or other locations as needed.

Java:

The troops that liberated Java are now in Northern Australia helping secure bases from with the allies could launch attacks from. All of the islands from Java to Timor are in friendly hands and Koepang, Dili and Saumlaki are being built up as the second line of defense backing up Darwin.

Australia:

Darwin has fallen to the weary troops of the 4th Infantry Division. Shipments of reinforcements, AV Support, Engineers and supplies are starting to pour in.

My units are now in pursuit of roughly 20 allied units in Northern Australia trying to cut them off from escape and destroy them. I have taking both Katerine and Daly Waters and am probably done expanding in the north. To the west I have taken Broome and Derby and will take Nookanbah to connect my Australian Lands together via the trail. I am trying to decide whether to defend Broome and Derby at all or just
concentrate on Darwin and vicinity.

North Pacific:

The allies have taken all of the Aleutians back and are busily building up the islands. During the past month my subs have caught and sunk 2 allied CVEs in the North Pacific area but his fleet CVs managed to elude me - they were spotted in the area but disappeared.

I am moving troops and base forces into the Kurile Islands and just got 9 BFs in Sapporo and they will be bought out and moved to the islands to build forts and small air fields - size 2 max outside Etorofu.

I don't expect a major push in this area any time soon, but would be surprised if Rob doesn't try to roll up the islands sometime in 44 when he has the resources to support multiple fronts.

General Ramblings:

Rob's sub offensive is getting to be a pain and its only in its early stages. He has subs triping over each other west of Japan and all around Okinawa. The Eact China Sea is full of subs, luckily I've been routing my convoys south of there. His subs are still catching merchies but his low experience subs and still poor torpedoes are resulting in a lot of misses and some dudes but I have lost 6 ships since Jan 1st - including a 8k size tanker. My ASW efforts have been apparently useless as I rarely get hits on the attacking subs. I have better luck with mines :)

CV Fleet:

I have had a few reports of US Carriers heading into the South Pacific so I am sending out the fleet. All 5 Fleet CVs and the bulk of my BBs are heading into the South Pacific - most likely base at Rabaul as Truk has a few pestering subs around it. I hope to catch Rob in a CV battle and sink some US Carriers - he has been very cautious with them this game and I haven't even got one into combat yet.

Main CV Fleet (leaving from Etorofu): Akagi, Junyo, Hiyo, Hiryu and Soryu with BBs Hiei and Kirishima along with a horde of DDs
Secondary CV Fleet (Leaving from Ominato): Ryujo, Ryuho along with a bunch of DDs
BB Fleet (Leaving from Ominato): 7 BBs (Yamato, Nagato, Mutsu, Fuso, Yamashiro, Ise and Hyuga) along with CA and DDs

CV Kaga is still in the repair yard at Yokohama from an allied torpedo in the North Pacific. Shokaku and Zuikaku are sitting in Singapore harbor.

Fleet CVs have had their Val air groups removed and Fighter air groups enlarged - minor expansion on Kate air group size as well. Between the 5 CVs I have 216 A6M5c Zeros and 94 Kates - with enough torpedoes for all to carry one on their first attack and some on their seconds as well. The CVEs carry 34 and 48 A6M5c Zeros respectively.

I plan on keeping the 2 CVEs near the BBs to provide CAP over them - or to back up the main CVs if a large enemy CV force is spotted. I plan on using the BBs to support my efforts in the Solomons. I don't see any other place to use them effectively other than the North Pacific and there is nothing worthwhile there. Should Rob invade the Kuriles I can recall the BBs but I don't expect that for at least a year.

I have been striping my CVEs and CVLs of their air groups, maxing them out and letting them sit in Japan and train pilots. I am thinking of moving the baby Carriers somewhere in Korea and leave them in port there for the rest of the war, but I may need them so I haven't done that yet. I have all the baby carriers I plan on producing so their future is in limbo right now.

My CV acceleration is going good with 3 CVs expected in June-Aug 43 time frame:

CV Unryu ETA 31 Oct 43 - should get in early June
CV Amagi ETA 25 Nov 43 - should get in mid to late June
CV Katsuragi ETA 19 Jan 44 - should get in mid July

Once these come off the line - or are very close I will change acceleration to CVs Kasagi, Aso and Ikoma. The rest of the CVs are halted.

I am hoping Rob picks a Solomon approach to begin bleeding my forces in 43 and I can't really think of another avenue to do this. He doesn't have the superiority he needs to simply charge up the mid pacific via Wake, Marcus, etc... I match him CV for Cv and my navy is completely intact - too much force for him to come straight at me. I think I have a year before the mid pacific avenue is viable - unless I can deal him some heavy loses to his CV force which may push that back a bit. I would think he needs somewhere he can count on his army air power to support his naval advances to confront me right now. What do you guys think ? Where would the first wave hit ?

wow been a while since I updated this [:D] I am currently sitting on the turn for March 22nd, 43 and after reading an interesting forum post http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3555379 I am completely rethinking my defenses and which islands to garrison and defend. I have never played a game further then mid/late 42 so I am in completely unknown water here and am thinking the biggest threat to me will be stopping the flow of resources / oil from DEI / Malaya and B-29 bombing japan flat. So I want to plan to defend against that correct ? Allied subs are hitting roughly 3 ships a week (1-2 are sinking) and I can handle those loses right now, but I am still seeing a lot of misses and dude torpedoes which will only go away as time goes on so I'm worried about Subs as well. Just don't have enough small asw ships - don't want to use DDs for the duty, but may have to.

Can some of the players with more experience in late game give me some tips / ideas on what to watch for or how to layer my defense ? I am thinking of dropping a division on Lunga to hold it for a while, but not sure if he'll even play ball there. He is heavily investing troops and air power in Suva and surrounding islands, but I have also caught him sniffing around Wake (although Wake doesn't matter really). Should I reinforce the Solomons and south pacific ?

Ok I have done a little research and using a 30-hex range I have identified all bases outside of Japan, Korea, Russia and China that can be used as a base for Heavies striking Japan. A lot of them are worthless fly specs of dirt that won't support medium bombers let alone heavies. But that makes me wonder what is the smallest AF a heavy will fly out of even at reduced bomb load ? B-17s want a size 5, and B-29s want a size 7, but what is the smallest they can fly out of ? This can drastically change my planning.

Right now the outermost ring of bomber bases would be the Mariannas (especially Guam), Yap, Babeldaob and Peleliu. The Inner Ring would be the Kuriles, Formosa and Okinawa. Does this look correct ?

The smallest they can fly out of should be a level 1 [:D]. They'll just fly with penalties associated with an undersized airfield: extended range effects at normal range (and shouldn't be able to fly at extended range).

Great - so they can fly from every little dirt heap in the ocean [:(] I suppose the limiting factor might be the ability to supply them. I am guessing a B-17 and B-29 use a lot of supply per mission. Looks like a B-17 will use 6 or 7 supplies per plane per mission and a B-29 will use 200 per aircraft per mission. Thats a lot of supply.

It is a lot of supply. And I think there are higher ops losses for operating from an airbase that is too small as well. I wouldn't worry too much about him operating from small airfields, as being overstacked reduces the odds that a strike will fly. Level 1 AFs only have a stacking limit of 50, and the big planes count for more than 1 against that stacking limit...

I would worry about larger bases, however. Particularly AF 5+.

Ok - there are a limit number of those bases. May pay attention to size 4+ just to be safe.

Should I heavily garrison the Marshalls ? Solomons ? DEI ? Or keep most of my troops in bases behind the front lines and ready to move forward to reinforce once I know his intent ? I am concerning about heavily garrisoning places like Tulagi, Lunga, etc.. only to have him bypass them and kill Rabaul / Kavieng and Truk - leaving those troops there to rot and die.

Those are legitimate concerns. It's easy to bypass those locations. You must weigh your options for defense, and look at places that you know he MUST take - be it for airfields, VPs, port facilities, securing SLOC, whatever he'll need to sustain his offensive push. Once you've accounted for those, you can look at other "would be nice to defend here" places.

Keep in mind that a base with SBS (1) AF can be built to level 4 and the Allies excel at base building. However, you probably only really have to worry about those with SBS (2). That does narrow down the options quite a bit, though. Can't use those little islands effectively.

I apologize if my pictures are to big - first try in a long time to include pics.

May 1st, 1943

Its been 2 months of real time and nearly 4 months of game time since my last post. Not sure if many people are reading / following this AAR. I know its a bit dull but not sure how to spice it up for you few that are following.

Economy:

Aircraft Production:

Carrier Fighter: A6M5c Zero x210 (size 60 x3, size 30 x1)
Carrier DB: D4Y3 Judy x120 (size 30 x4) [Just got these] [End game plane]
Carrier TB: B6N2 Jill x90 (size 30 x3) [Just got these] [End game plane]
LR Bomber: G3M3 Nell x60 & G4M1 Betty x60 (1 size 60 each) [keeping numbers up until G4M2 comes available]
Naval Recon: E14Y1 Jake x30
Army Fighter: Ki-44-IIc Tojo x270 (size 60 x4, size 30 x1)
Army Bomber: Ki-49-IIb Helen x120 (size 30 x4) [End game plane]
Army Recon: Ki-15-II Babs x30 (size 30 x1) [End game plane]
Transports: Ki-49-II KAI Helen x60 (size 30 x2) [End game plane]
Other: H8K2 Emily x30 (size 30 x1)

Aircraft R&D Update:

My Aircraft R&D is going good - not fast enough for my tastes after the last turn but going good I believe.

A7M2 Sam - 5 Factories repairing. Don't expect this anytime before 44.
B7A2 Grace - 2 Factories repairing.
G4M2 Betty - 3 Factories repairing. Want to keep the LR Torpedo threat to keep his future offenses
honest. Small TFs on their own without air cover I want to be able to hit.
J2M3 Jack - 5 Factories repaired - 1 month advancement every 10 days (3 per month)
ETA: 7/43
Ki-100-I Tony - 6 Factories repaired - 1 month advancement every ~ 8 days (3.75 per month)
ETA: 8/43
N1K2-J George - 4 Factories repaired & 1 repairing - 1 month advancement every 12 days.
ETA: 10/43
P1Y2 Frances - 2 Factories repaired & 1 repairing. ETA: Early 44

War Material Stockpiles:

HI: 671,237 NS: 1,081 Jap Points: 30,913
ARM: 151,003 MS: 2,207 Allid Points: 10,074
Veh: 33,386

I am thinking of halting Armaments to continue stockpiling HI as long as I hover around 150k. My Hi is roughly increasing 4k a day but every month I lose 40k HI to training costs - basically a third of my surplus.

I have roughly a year of fuel sitting in Japan plus around 180 days of oil to process. I am mostly hauling fuel to Japan but an occasional TF of oil arrives as well. Resources are another issue - only around 2 months supply on hand. I have completely restructured my convoys recently and am hoping it will not only increase my delivery of resources, but lower my fuel costs too.

India/Northern Burma:

Image

I have just moved my last fighter unit into the theater and realistically cannot pull anymore without risking a sneak attack on an important logistical or staging base. I have the bulk of my men sitting in Rangoon just doing nothing but sucking down supplies and waiting for Rob to make his move. As per the attached pic you can seen our battle lines. in the marked hex I have 6 units with roughly 800 combat strength. Rob has 15 units with roughly 1500 combat strength. He hasn't done much attacking on the ground here, and my troops have level 2+ forts prepared in the Jungle hex. He will need a lot more men to force
me out of this hex.

The problem in Burma is the air power. He has multiple large airfields and what seems like endless numbers of fighters (P-40s and Hurricane Trops) and medium bombers. He has most of his fighters based around the front, and most of his bombers in Calcutta which is out of reach.

My fighters will hold their own a bit, and then he will sweep with 60+ fighters and kill 20+ fighters in one turn. I will honestly say I am not using my best pilots here, in fact any that get good Air Skills I am pulling out for use when I have better planes. But I still don't like losing the airframes (36 HI per fighter). So I am thinking since I can't really hit his bomber airfields at Calcutta, what if I make him move them closer ? I am thinking of abandoning Cox's Bazaar and pulling back to Akyab. of the two, Akyab is easier for me to reinforce and has more forts already built. If he moves into Cox's he will need to base fighters there to keep me from bombing it flat, thus his planes become vulnerable to naval bombardment - which I have had good luck with in killing allied planes.

By giving up Cox willingly I can save all my men there, reduce my need for fighters (by 1 base) and consolidate my AA units in Akyab -- and they actually seem to do decent against his medium bombers !! What do you guys think ?

With Rangoon being built to a size 7 port, do any of you see a point in having an AS or AR in theater ?

Malaya:

Malaya is nothing but a place to build forts and rest units. Georgetown and Singapore are the only places of activity - both building forts. Singapore is my major shipping hub handling all of Malaya's resources as well as all oil and fuel shipments from Palembang. Oil / Fuel / Resources from Palembang are hauled to singapore on smaller ships and then crossloaded onto larger ships for delivery to Japan. Fuel / Oil from Medan is moved to Georgetown and then by road / rail to singapore.

Java:

A small inconvenience has popped up in this theater. The British 18th Division has popped up on Christmas Island IO. A CA-led TF smashed another troops TF heading there (death toll was high in engineers and support so I'm guessing base units and Av support). But now he has at least part of a divison sitting there. The base can definately be built up high enough level to threaten both Palembang and Soerbaja so I think I will need to cleanse the island. That will request at least a division of troops. Should I clense the British stain from my empire or let the fester and rot ?

Soerbaja is building some forts and using its size 7 port to support my naval actions on the northern coast of Australia. I currently have 2 BBs, 3 CAs, 1 CL, 6 DDs and numerous smaller ships assigned to this area. CarDiv 3 (sho and Zui) crippled the Prince of Wales months ago and it is still sitting in Port Hedland. I routinely raid Port Hedland with my warships flattening the airfields there as he has medium and heavy bombers based there to harrash my troops in norther Australia. here is the results from my last bombardment:

Night Naval bombardment of Port Hedland at 57,129

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 35
Port hits 9
Port fuel hits 3

I am thinking I need to send a couple of CVEs or CVLs over here for fighters and Kates to finish off the Prince of Wales - I bet he is crippled enough to never leave that dinky little port, but I want the VPs for him.

Australia:

Image

I have roughly 5-6 Divisons of troops in northern Australia currently holding all the bases shown in the above pic. Australian troops (32 units) just moved into Daly Waters but I am not sure they have the firepower to push my 560 combat strength out from behind the lvl 3 forts. His troops in Oz have proven to be numerous but low on supplies.

I have a brigade at 70% moving to cut off the trail south of Daly to completely block supplies moving to his troops. His major power here (as in Burma) is air power. Fighters based at Tennant Creek (including dreaded P-38s) and his bombers are at Cloncurry out of reach. My zeros (stuck full of rookie pilots) seem to be keeping the bombers at bay (losses are fairly low) but that will change as his P-38s are beginning to clear the skies of my fighters. I have 1 plan in the works and another one on the drawing board.

Plan: Surprise Surprise Surprise

This plan is straight and simple and I'm surprised he hasn't thought of it. Recon of Tennant Creek shows minimal troops there. And I just happen to have 80 Combat Strength of paratroopers at Katherine prepping for an airborne assault. The goal is to fly LR CAP over Tennant for a turn and land as much of the 80 Combat strength I can - I have roughly 100 transports assembling for this. I hope to take the base, destroying the fighters units there. I don't plan on holding the base, so once I take it, I will withdraw most of the troops leaving just a few behind to hold the base until he comes and takes it. The entire
time I control it all of his troops to the north starve.

Plan: On drawing board.

Land at Normanton with a small force to take the base, and engineers. Build an airfield and bomb the nearby allied bases until he forces me out. Even the threat of me being that close may force him to pull his bombers out of Cloncurry, which will leave my troops to the north free to smash the allied troops they face. Even if he bombs Normanton flat and keeps it smashed, it diverst his bombers away from what I care about - keeping northern OZ as long as I can with minimal investment. Does this sound like a possible plan ?

South Pacific:

Well its finally started the allies' advance. For several days the US Carriers have been pounding Baker Island and then Tabiteuea. Then the BBs came in and the marines and tanks. My naval guard units succumbed in one day and were wiped out the next. My Cvs were resting around Rabaul and come over to play as I knew
the allied CVs were low on fuel and ordnance - easy prey. So I packed for big game - mostly Kates and fighters and came over to play. Unfortunately the CVs fled, but even though they moved some Marine Corsairs to the airfield the amphibs there were easy game.

In all I lost 31+ Zeros to the Marine Cap and managed to shoot down 2-3 of them only. Only a handful of actual bombers were shot down. The only good result was the massive loss of troops suffered to what I hope were be AV Support units - and hopefully any CD guns he was moving in. Another advantage (got to look at the bright side) is I sunk 10 xAPs and 1 xAK in the failed interception. That number of lost xAPs has to diminish his troops landing capacity at least a little bit. Right ?

Now he has a base nearby he cannot support without naval forces, my major surface ships (9 BBs plus CAs) will be able to bombard the hell out of the place. I sunk his CM there as well, so its likely there are no mines yet either. I have a bombardment TF already forming and moving over.

The problem I see here is now he has begun to bypass all the islands I have in the south pacific - Noumea, Efate, etc... I am scrambling to beging withdrawing units from there while I can. I am sure his CVs are heading back to Pearl to refuel / rearm and will be back and I don't want nothing in the area when they do. I don't have enough bases in the area to provide adequate LBA cover for an adventageous CV engagement.

CV Fleet:

After the failed CV engagement near Tabiteuea I am thinking of sending my CVs to port for their 4/43 refit. This will give me a month to build up stockpiles of new Jills and Judys for the inevitable CV engagement. I will also get 3 new CVs in late June / July.

I have stripped all my CVEs of their air groups and they are sitting in Japan training pilots. I am thinking of finding a nice safe port somewhere and parking them for the rest of the war to avoid them being sunk - they are fairly useless with the lack of aircraft they can carry. Even my CVLs are aircraft less right now except for Ryuho and Ryujo which were operating as LR CAP for KB near Tabiteuea.

General Ramblings:

The allied sub offensive keeps getting on my nerves. Roughly 1 ship a day gets hit or sunk from enemy subs no matter what I try. I have started converting some of the baby xAKLs into PBs with only 1 DC rack, but at least they can help by absorbing a torpedo or such. Its very frustrating when his subs attack with impunity even when faced with a bunch of escorts. Is there anything Japan can do to make ASW more effective ? I don't mind losing ships if I would occasionally damage one of his subs in return. It should be another month before my ASW air patrols are fully training and placed so I have a while to go.

I have noticed a lot (if not all) of my little AMcs can convert to PBs. The PB version is nearly worthless but its still another escort. Should I convert the load or keep the AMcs. Developers have said that an AMc in a port will automatically conduct mine sweeping missions which, which not important now, may be important later when he starts air mining ports in Japan.

I have a feeling I will be needing to remove a few fighter units from training duty in Japan and move them to the front soon to help counter the allied offensive. With Tabiteuea in his hands, Baker is dead. Tarawa will be next and I'm not sure how much to invest in its defense. It currently has level 5 forts so I'm thinking of dropping a regiment or two there for defense. I know it won't hold, but it will force him to bring a couple divisions to take it and I don't think he can easily assemble that many troops yet.

Truk has been isolated by enemy subs for months now - I can still move some ships in and out but don't want to risk any high-value units. Kavieng and Rabaul are now my main bases in the theater. I have multiple AKEs positioned there for rearming duties.

RE: End of Western Hypocrisy - or Xargun (Japs) vs RRoberson (Allies) - No RRobs

Post by Xargun »

May 21st, 1943

Economy:

War Material Stockpiles:

HI: 774,561 NS: 966
ARM: 153,358 MS: 2,892
Veh: 36,106

I have cut my Armament production down to 140 a day and am gaining an additional 1k HI per day. This is pushing my HI Stockpiles up by roughly 10k a turn - I hoping this will help counter the 1/3 of my monthly HI Stockpile going to Pilot Training.

My re-org of my resource convoys seems to be working good - I am up +10 days of resources on hand since the first of May. It should increase more as I did not reorg them all on the first but sometime after as well.

(Numbers only include the island of Honshu)

Oil Reserve: ~2 million tons (245 days)
Fuel Reserve: ~1.8 million tons (157 days)
Resource Reserve: ~6.9 million tons (62 days)
Supply Reserve: ~1.8 million tons

If I add in the Fuel Reserve on Hakkaido (1.1 million tons) my fuel reserve increases to 237 days.

India/Northern Burma:

Recon in Burma show Rob is probing along the jungle near my bases with medium sized units. I have equal units sitting near where I see him, while engineers keep building forts. he has a bunch of Chinese troops sitting in Paoshan and looks like another division equivalent marching there as well. I have sent 2 divisions from Rangoon to smash the chinese before returning to Rangoon. A good attack or two should decimate the Chinese units.

He seems to be looking for a hole in my defensive perimeter in Burma and once I send out units to deal with his probes my reserves in Rangoon as very low. I am sending another Division to Burma from Japan (Just rebuilt it with newly arrived units and bought it out a couple turns ago). I am wondering if I should send two to be safe or not ?

I have pulled out my small Coys from Cox's Bazaare to Akyab in preparation of adbandoning the base. His air power shattered Cox for a while, although engineers there have repaired it. I have decided Cox is to far north to station any real air assets there so Akyab will be my northernmost airfield - I will still fly some LR CAP over Cox as needed, but basically its on its own.

He moved his hoard of bombers to Akyab and over the last couple turns we've had a lot of air battles. Finally I am gaining the upper hand again. My high-flying CAP is killing his escorting fighters and now with layered cap I am killing bombers again as well.

I am trying to use Burma to train up my pilots to roughly 78-80 exp and then I pull them out and replace with lower train pilots. I want to be able to field a bunch fo highly skilled pilots when I get good aircraft in 44.

Australia:

My gambit to steal Tennant's Creek has failed. On the invasion day probably half of my transports were damaged / shot down on the initial landing, reducing the number of men I air dropped. After that he began bombing them into ineffectiveness. The two small paratroop units are moving back to Darwin to take on replacements and rest.

The 65th Brigade has been hammered by allied heavy bomber attacks for weeks now and is limping north for some relief. During the lull of air attacks on Daly Waters, I have swapped out the Division & Regiment guarding it with rested troops from Darwin and am moving the abused units north for some R&R.

The Australians attempted a Shock Attack at Daly Waters a few turns back that ended poorly for them against my lvl 3 forts. Their low supply levels didn't help. Over 8000 allied casualties resulted from their failed attack. The stack of troops has since moved back south to try to finish off the 65th Brigade which so far has been lucky in escaping them.

Rob's best bet is to go around Daly Waters but if he does that he puts a strong position on his supply route. He doesn't have the strength to take the base, but he can't go around it as I'll cut his supplies and then crush him with the reserve troops at Katherine and Darwin. I think he may pull back and hold me there while his air power pounds me for a few months. He needs another 1000 AS before trying again - not sure where he will get that in OZ... I don't think they get that many reinforcements.

South Pacific:

The US having Tabiteuea started out being a real pain with his P-38s sweeping my fighters at Tarawa and downing them with little effort. I have brought in more fighters and now the air battle is more even - with losses on both sides.

I have moved a Regiment of reinforcements to Tarawa and SBDs from Tabiteuea (escorted by Corsairs) hammered the ships. I lost 4 xAKs before I figured out a trick - instead of having my fighters flying CAP on the base, I have them flying LRCAP at range 0 on the TF and they seemed to do wonders, shooting down a coupel Corsairs and most of the SBDs on the next attack. I'll have to remember that trick.

I am reinforcing the Marshall Islands a bit with a few small combat units and hauling a bunch of supply to them as I feel they will soon be under siege.

This turn I will finish evacuating the last of the Naval Guard unit sitting on Baker's Island. Even though it takes forever, Mavis can move some over a long distance. Much safer to use aircraft over risking ships.

Wake Island:

I have a feeling this is where the next US Hammer will fall. I have decided the island is not really worth fighting over so I have withdrawn one of the Naval Guard units and am picking up bits and pieces of the rest via Mavis transports. I am leaving the bulk of the troops there behind the forts to try to bloody his assault, but I am not confident in their ability. But when they get destroyed I have a bit of them somewhere safe to build back into the full unit - it will rebuild faster then buying it back and rebuilding it.

A Naval Guard and the Wake CD unit will welcome any allies coming to shore here. I'm hoping the CDs guns do some damage to his landing force.

Marcus Island:

I am withdrawing all troops from this piece of rock, leaving it wide open for allied conquest. It is simply not worth any units dying over.

CV Fleet:

Kaga has finished its 4/43 refit in Japan and the rest of my CVs are undergoing their refits in Hong Kong (safer to get to than Japan) and will be down in roughly 2 weeks. Then they will return to the south pacific to await a date with the allied CVs - probably around the Marshalls.

Two CVLs and a bunch of DDs are closing on Hong Kong for their 4/43 refits as well. Then I will load up some zeros and kates on the CVLs and visit Port Hedland to finish off the POW.

The construction on the Unryu class CVs is coming along nicely with the first due in like 30ish days and the next two within 45 days after that. I think these three will form a new CarDiv and possibly play in the north pacific keeping the allies honest in the Aluetians until needed elsewhere. Can't really think of anywhere else to use them except maybe in the Indian Ocean to harass the British.

General Ramblings:

The allied subs continue to whittle away at my merchant marine fleet, almost every day getting a hit or kill on an xAK. Last turn they got lucky and put a torp into one of my sacred Giant tankers (Whalen class ? Carried both dry and wet cargo). Instead of turning around an moving 1 hex to Daito Shoto, the stupid AI moved it towards Japan where it sank at sea after moving multiple hexes.

I also have another large AO laid up in Tarakan harbor with 93/39/29 damage - the flt damage is all major. Estimated repair time is 240ish days. I am hoping to repair the System down a bunch and then slowly move it to manila or Hong Kong for faster repairs. I'm just glad it made it to port and I have a good chance of saving it.

The air war is getting bloody with multiple turns with total loses for both sides over 100 planes. I don't mind the loses too much as most of my pilot losses are on newb pilots or pilots with little training time invested.

Some turns are very frustrating as allied fighters maul my cap and my asw efforts are worse than pathetic with little to show for it. I just have to remember to carry on and that its not even bad yet :)

I am hoping the Ki-100-I Tony and Ki-84 Randy will help restore some of the fighter balance against the Corsairs and P-38s. I have no experience in this are so can someone who has played through 43 and 44 offer some advice ? Will the Tony, Randy, George, Sam give me any parity back ? Or does it just offset the widening gap between Zeros / Tojos versus newer allied planes ?

Also, the Grace - stats shows she carries a torpedo, but she is listed as a Dive Bomber. What is up with that ? Is it a DB error ?

I don't ever turn off my ARM or VEH. They are like HI, and in fact in the late game they are what I spend most of my HI on (replacements and new ID's). Remember, it takes 6 HI to build one ARM or VEH.

This is one reason I set all of my cargo TF's to cruise ... when they get hit, it keeps them at cruise and allows them to repair or at lest not get worse. Otherwise, as you have seen, they crank up to full and sink themselves ... It seems to help, but this is entirely my opinion.

I haven't turned off any Vehicle production especially with my upcoming plans for my armor units. I have decreased my Armament production in favor of banking HI. I am afraid I may need the HI for aircraft more than guns come late 44 / 45. I am still maintaining my Armament level at 150k+ though.

I have gone through and am trying to remember to keep all convoys at cruise speed. Maybe this will help.
