What's on the USS Georgia

It does look like it has sonic transparency both on the back and front of it, what ever it is...

It's a "hanger" for SEAL equipment. Underwater vehicles, sleds, bulky equipment.

She's been out/under a while too. That hull looks rough. Even got some sea moss on the bow.

Muzzle hatch open at sea makes me think they're using that tube for vertical storage as well.

And the fairwater planes ought not be doing that unless they're using them for a "mini-crane" to do little local hoisting.

SLBMs. ICBMs are land-based.

The ones converted for spec ops have had the strat systems removed I think. I'd have to check, as four (?) were converted to be cruise missile trucks and spec op boats. I believe by treaty the Russians are/were allowed to come on-board and inspect to see that they were de-SLBMed. But it's years since I looking into this issue.

4 of the early Ohio class were reclassified as SSGN's. They no longer carry ICBM's, instead they carry SLCM's (Tomahawks) and SEAL (with all their toys). They are considered Special operation boats. And usually tasked to SOCOM.

I lived at Bremerton while two of the boats were converted and got to watch them (through my living room window) as they went through the process. Some of the tubes were retained for equipment storage , others were modified for the Tomahawks. They carry a LOT of SLCM's and over 150 SEALs.

That's a former Airedale. After I retired and went to work as a Naval/military historian in several different museums/memorials I gave up "clan affiliation". I became "just the guy with the books". [:D] I even had to learn a little about ARMY guys! :O Besides Moose, I'm reading your book. What's a Bubblehead doing writing about a Marine? [:D]

Sub launched Tomahawks can be launched 3 ways. One , through the torpedo tubes. Two through a special launcher on the improved LA class attack boats that do not tie up torpedo tubes and allow a mass launch. And three , through the Ohio class former Trident launch tubes.

Same pay grade, different areas of responsibility and expertise. First Sergeant for Marines interested in command responsibility, and Master Sergeant for those interested in technical and operations management.

As a retired bubblehead, AW1STEVE is right on. several of the older SSBN's were turned into slow attack boats and some as the SSGN' for seal delivery etc. Good Job Steve
