Big performance tip: Don't leave IADS in groups

Post by Dimitris »

Meaning: If you import an entire IADS or EW/GCI network via an import file, and it is placed as a group, _break that group_. (You do this by selecting the group entity while in group-view and deleting it. The individuals comprising the group remain as they are).

Why: Group members, by default, try to position themselves on formation stations around the group lead. In the case of an IADS, this often means dozens of radars or SAM batteries attempt to orient themselves around the center of the "IADS group". Since in many cases these facilities are near the coast, in islands or in other areas hard/impossible to reach, the pathfinding AI goes completely desperate in trying to plot a possible course.... and trying..... and trying.... until the whole scenario bogs down for no good reason.

So please, break up those massive IADS "groups". Thanks.

Any other critical performance tips? For reference, Duelists is bogging down my POS, and I'd like to make any scenarios I build as crappy-computer-friendly as possible.

Use Single-Unit Airfield whenever possible, for all airfields that are not likely to be attacked.

Have pity on the navigators in the game.

If you're adding merchant traffic or whatever try not and make bit brains have to plot 50 tracks through the Aegean as the navigator does cost cycles (you can actually see the plotting and replotting through complex sea areas). Reserve the navigation feature for units that might actually fight or do something in the scenario.

Likewise you may consider making sides that aren't fighting or observing blind as well so they are not spending cycles working out contacts for no good reason.

Its the navigator here trying to get around Norway and likely a lot of uncertainty zones being worked out.

Might be worth adding this as a sticky where small pieces of advice get posted.
