Conversion of ACOW scenario

Post by TAIL_GUNNER »

Found an interesting Bulge scenario on Rugged Defense...battalion level action by Jim Burns.

But it was made for ACOW..

Just need to save in TOAW III editor?

It can't be that easy...[8D]

It's easier than that. This scenario is in the TOAW III Classic folder, already converted.

I can highly-recommend you check Rob 'The Doc' Kunz's Ardennes '44 which is available on request and here as well. It works with the 3XBb.exe, that fixes the AAA bug and tones down the 'ignore losses' issue, too. It's Rgt/Bn scale and 2.5km/hex 12hrs/turn and one of the best available!

Is it the same one already included with TOAW III? I think that version is 1.3.
It's very beautiful.[&o]

But unfortunately, I must explain I'm one of those nitpicky a-holes that require almost near-perfect OOBs and TOEs.
For any Ardennes scenario, I always look at the 244. StuG-Bde. to get an idea of how well researched the OOB is. Kunz has about the right amount of StuG, but it appears there is also a full battalion of PaK40 and some FlaK attached...[&:]

I mean absolutely no disrespect.....it's just the way I is.

I have no idea one way or the other, but sometimes units are combined in order to prevent having a horde of 1-1's on the map.

Also wondering if I am an closer with this :

The latest version is 3.7, with a new .eqp file and the 'Doc' I'd say done some good research; keep in mind some units had a Sicherungs- HQ-Kp attached to them, too. That's reflected. Here the StuG.Bde.244:

StuG numbers look good...on December 10th, the unit reported fourteen ready for action. Whether they received any StuH before December 16th is unknown.....nominal strength would be 22 StuG, 9 StuH.
The Rifle and Engineer squads I can only assume represent a Begleit-Batterie....the 244 was never assigned one....also they rode on the StuGs themselves so no 251/1 either.
The Sdkfz 7/1 were only assigned to Panzertruppen StuG Abteilung....and I have no idea why the PaK40 are there....I don't see any towed AT assets assigned in 5.Panzer-Armee. So ideally the Brigade in the game would look like:

18/22 Sturmgeshütz IIIG
2/9 Sturmhaubitze 42

....and that's it.[8D]

It is possible and highly likely, that the components of the Pak.Abtl. of the 18.VG.DIV was distributed, hence the 12 x 7.5cm Pak.

Sources always differ, e.g.

http://stugiii.com/stugunits/heerunits.html
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0&t=182639
http://worldtracker.org/media/library/W ... Sector.pdf

Your best bet: Contact Rob 'The Doc' Kunz and ask which sources her used.

Tail_Gunner,
Thank you for your feedback. Indeed Sturmgeschütz vor!: Assault guns to the Front! by Kurowski lists 14 StuG for Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 244. I just corrected that in v4.1.

James Burns' Bulge 44 did a excellent job with the OOB, and his German AFV figures closely matches Danny Parker's figures. I take exception, however, with the use of 100% TOE strength across the board in Bulge 44. My main source was Trevor Dupuy Hitler's Last Gamble, which gives percent of personnel assigned as well as number and type of major equipment at divisional level.

In the bigger picture, however, when the sides are balanced so the Germans (vs Allied PO) have a reasonable chance of reaching their historic objectives by Christmas, the Allies are then able to push the Germans back to their start line by games-end of 16 Jan. Historically, however, the Germans still held Houffalize until 16 Jan. The Allies made slow headway against deep snow, supply difficulties and a tenacious German defense. To account for this I have increased the shock penalty on both sides, but more so for the Allies.

Still a work in progress, and your comments would be appreciated.

Hitler's Last Gamble
One thing that I just noticed... the lack of snow. That wasn't the case in earlier versions.
And here, another pressie for you, Doc:

P.S. And closest Bulge '44 experience regarding the weather of me, during my winter up in the mountains of WV...

Thanks for the link and for the scenarios you've done. Enjoyed the Road to Moscow. I appreciate the time you put in creating these gems.

But unfortunately, I must explain I'm one of those nitpicky a-holes that require almost near-perfect OOBs and TOEs.

Hey !! I resemble that remark !

And following what others have already written, I suspect in this case that the designer has amalgamated smaller units/pieces of smaller units into the major units, whether from a design "keep it simple" approach and/or from a historic "the 987th AAA/TD was always split into squadrons and those attached to parent infantry divisions" approach.

I've done the same, and often after trying out separate approaches, and then making yet another version of the .sce, and then re-re-testing everything.  AND THEN I DO NOT BOTHER TO STATE WHAT I HAVE DONE IN THE DOCUMENT.  I guess I think other players will automatically know which tab of which spreadsheet or view of which db, will show the historic record, and then my edits, and reasoning for edits, and test results.

Thanks to this thread, I have a good reminder to write what I've done (both in building a OOB/TOE and in designing the map/terrain and in scenario design overall) into the document.  There will be players out there who not only will appreciate that documenting, but will also insist upon it - just as there are players who do not care too much for the details.
Thanks for the reminder.

Well, what version are you using? It should show up if you use 3.4.0.202 but it was designed using the unofficial 3XBb.exe anyway to negate the AAA-bug and the 'ignore-losses' issue, too.

Klink, Oberst

P.S. Thanks 'Doc' for mentioning me in the dispatches :)

Herr Oberst,

It will not show up with 3.4.0.202. It will only show up if using the modified exe.

Best wishes,
Steve

No problem then Stevo; 3XBb.exe is a available and aye, it's only showing up with the fix from Kapitan Kloss; I wonder where he is. I shall investigate.
