RE: Adjusted exe for bomardments only attacks

Post by michaelm75au »

This only affects the actual combat resolution itself. I have not touched any other code.

There may be a problem in that defending units in 'defend' or 'bombardment' appear to be using all devices to counter-fire against a unit firing in bombardment mode. So while the attacker can only use ranged weapons, the defender in position can use all weapons.

Adjusted rule would be:
In defensive fire against a bombardment attack, only ranged weapons (as would be allowed in a bombardment attack) are fired in the defending unit if it is in 'defend' or 'bombardment' stance.
This might make bombardments less bloody to the attacker.[&:] Especially against units with few ranged weapons.
I'll create an updated EXE to attach here for players to try out later today.

Note that this applies to all such combat. The river attack above just made it stand out.
Haven't tried the new exe, but theoretically it should work well. I think that's how it was supposed to work, but you know better than I just how certain things were actually implemented. Can you say doggies breakfast?? [:D]

Good on you, Michael. That was quite a find. Anything unexpectedly up-chucks, I'll let you know, but I don't think we'll have any real problems.

Ciao. John

Combat in a hex involves all available units. Not sure how that would apply if only one unit was set to Shock.
[I'll try to see how that applies]

It uses the highest attack level for the hex combat (Shock in this case is the highest). But that might only be for the general combat type.
Terribly confusing...this may take a bit of time
Lucky there is only 2 ground combat sessions in the turn[:D]

Normally only the river crossing unit shock attacks. I wasn't surprised about the shock attack, I was surprised by a) all my army shock attacked and b) it did NO damage at all but took a horrendous beating

I had a 200 men unit crossing the river and took 800+ disabled squads in the army that already was there... and that is not the way it works in 99 out of 100 times.

edit: just read that the bombardment was the problem. Good to know, gonna stand down all my units when a river crossing accurs in future. Thanks for looking at it! [:)]

So please, let me understand (think it's quite important):

with the new beta it safe to say that in a situation just like the one in which was castor, only the river-crossing unit will shock attack, while the rest of the army will not suffer? correct?

Thanks in advance

Followup: What about units set to bombard on that turn? Will they participate in the shock attack? (my assumption is that they should, and it should be on the player to stop the bombardment if they don't want it to occur...)

I'd just stand down all other units and not having them bombard. This worked in also in all previous versions, official and beta. Only because I had all units on bombard when one unit crossed the river they took that damage. Have had several river crossings since then and all worked as they should.
