Dave has been resupplying Iwo Jima via small expendable ships and transport AC so this turn over 50 Japanese transport AC are shot down by the CAP over Fifth Fleet.

Ive attached the a screenshot of the area around Iwo Jima....the whole damn Jap fleet was 9 hexes to the NE of Iwo Jima so we didnt have the major carrier battle that we both expected. I need to advance towards KB a minimum of 2 hexes next turn to get in range. If I do that.... I will be in extended Jill range of Miyake-jima(12 hexes) and Netty range of both Daito Shoto and Yokohama. Then if Dave retreats just 1 hex towards the Home Islands...KB will hit me at 8 hex range without a response from the Allied carriers. If I charge in like John Wayne to force a carrier battle then I will be in range of Yokohama and also the 800 fighters and 200 bombers at Tokyo as well as normal range of whatever is at Miyake-jima.

Meanwhile.... Im losing the battle to close the level 6 AF at Daito Shoto. Dave has reinforced Daito Shoto with supplies and now has over 700 guns there. The P-51Ds have performed poorly and their botched escort of the B-24s from Aparri last turn let the B-24s get chewed up by Japanese LRCAP over Daito Shoto and the ones that got thru were hit pretty hard from AA. Daito Shoto is only 35% damaged now and the B-24s at Aparri are less than 20% effective.

Dave is expecting me to either stay put at Iwo Jima or advance on KB where I get drawn into the web of Japanese land based naval strike AC. So I will do neither.

Eighth Army.... on the beach at Iwo Jima....has been temporarily resupplied but still has some fatigue and morale to recover as well as some disabled squads. I will postpone the assault on Iwo Jima and allow Eighth Army to get stronger. Meanwhile....Fifth Fleet will sortie to the SW of Iwo Jima to take out the level 6 AF at Daito Shoto. Carrier F4U-1As will sweep Daito Shoto while Avengers bomb the AF. If Dave has Netties escorted by A6M2s at Daito Shoto targeting the Allied carriers they should have uncoodinated strikes and should get chewed up by Allied CAP. s The B-24s and P-51Ds at Aparri will be rested. The B-29s will night bomb the level 2 AF at Miyake-jima.... recon show 100 fighters and 40 bombers there. I cant close the AF there but I should be able to disrupt the Japanese squadrons and hurt their morale as well as damage AC on the ground. I dont dare attack Miyake-jima during the day as Im sure it is LRCAPed from Yokohama and Tokyo. I will also fly recon over Yokohama to see how many AC are based there.

A situation that once seemed so straight forward to me is now turning into a game of chess.

CENTPAC: DISASTER ON IWO JIMA

The Fast carriers of TG 58 sortied towards Daito Shoto on 11/29/44 as we attempted to shut down tyhe level 6 AF. For whatever reason....the Avengers didnt fly on either 11/29 or 11/30 so the AF at daito Shotto is completely operational again. I will need to wit a few turns to rest the shot up B-24s and P-51Ds on Luzon before we make another effort to shut down Daito shoto.

The Allied carriers moved back to Iwo Jima on 12/1/44 to support Eight army's assault there. We thrrew everything but the kitchen sink at Iwo Jima:

I had rested the troops on Iwo Jima for nearly 2 weeks and all the LCUs had gotten their disruption down to the low single digits prior to the attack. I almost wondered if my naval bombardments hit the CENTPAC troops in Iwo Jima rather than the Japanese as the combat result showed that the Allied troos....not the Japanese troops .... were disrupted. I searched the threads on the forum and someone had posted that their troops were disrupted for an attack when they thought that they would be attacking with virtually no disruption and it was discussed that over stacking can add to disruption in an assault. If thats the case...then the Japanese can over stack defenders on atolls and small islands and the Allies can never capture those bases because of over stacking penalties.

So the 4 Allied divisions on Iwo Jima are virtually destroyed. We cannot take Iwo with the current forces. Fifth Fleet will cover the withdrawal of fragments of the 4 divisions so we can rebuild them if Dave eventually destroys all the CENTPAC troops on Iwo Jima. Im not sure what I will be doing next. Im considering prepping another 4 divisions for Iwo and maybe trying to attack again in 90 days.... or maybe just write off Iwo Jima completely for this game. I ended up having 20 CVEs, 1 CVL and 1 CV hit by Japanese torpedo bombers..... 8 of the CVEs ended up sinking... in the campaign for Iwo Jima. I thought that Iwo Jima would be easy... its relatively isolated and I was able to shut down virtually every Japanese AF within range of Iwo Jima. Any of the other islands I might now try to capture off Japan....like Okinawa, Tanegashia. Amami Oshima, Miyake-jima etc.... will be covered by dozens of interlocking Japanese AFs and Allied carrier losses could be horrendous.

I may just shut down Allied amphibious activity and just strategic bomb Japan at night.

CENTPAC: DISASTER ON IWO JIMA

Ive got this sense of deja vu regarding Iwo Jima. In my 1st game of WitP I think that I was one of the first players to discover that land combat on Iwo Jima was treated as an atoll combat even though Iwo Jima is a small island. I lost 3 divisions at Iwo Jima in that game.

Now I thought that I had learned from that game so I brought 4 divisions and a lot of armor this time to Iwo Jima but the result was the same. I finished loading fragments of all the LCUs on Iwo Jima this turn so that the 4 divisions can be rebuilt if Dave somehow destroys the remaining CENTPAC forces on the island. Fifth Fleet will now withdraw back to the Marianas. Its time to repair CV Yorktown and CVL San Jacinto as well as over a dozen CVEs that were all damaged in the fighting in the Bonins. When I had over 2000 AV on Iwo Jima I could go through 100,000 supplies in 2 turns. Now that I only have 400 AV left on the island the supply situation is much better....Im not overstacked nearly as bad so the supplies seem to be lasting much longer now.

I rebuilt the P-51D squadrons on Luzon over the past couple of weeks and sent a 250 plus B-24 air raid on the critically important Japanese level 6 AF at Daito Shoto. Five squadrons of P-51Ds either swept Daito Shoto or escorted the bombers. The P-51D is no war winner....I lost 60 P-51Ds last turn...57 in A2A combat. However, Daito Shoto is now 90% damaged and the Japanese lost 136 AC destroyed on the ground. Overall.... the Japanese lost 223 AC vs Allied losses of 132 AC. And of course....another 10 Skytrain transport AC were lost to ops while flying supplies over the hump into China.

Ive attached a screenshot of northern Luzon as I try to figure out how to prosecute the war from here. Im not sure if it is worth it to stage another amphibious assault into the teeth of Japanese land based naval strike aircraft. However.... Luzon is one big unsinkable carrier sitting between Japan and the SRA. Ive got one level 9 AF at Aparri with another level 7 AF next to it at Tueguegaro. Tuguegaro and Vigan can both be enlarged to level 9 and then we can base over 1000 AC on the northern edge of Luzon...... enough to completely cut Japan's SLOC through the South China Sea and also shut down the Japanese AFs on Formosa once and for all.

AdmSpruance,

my understanding of the change from WiTP to WiTP-AE is atoll became a terrain type, and it is island size (tiny or small) that triggers the shock attack.

I also think many players have an unrealistic expectation of the P51D. The P51D was not as fast, maneuverable or well armed as a griffon power spitfire, nor as maneuverable and well armed as a Frank or BF109K. However, its excellent design allowed for very high performance using a Merlin engine, so it was a much easier to fly than the overpowered (for their airframe) late model spits or 109s, was significantly faster than the Frank, and could escort bombers to strategic targets throughout the enemy's depth.

My opinion is that if you can strangle Japan economically as you are set up to do, you will find you will be able to achieve air supremacy over the next six months as Japan can no longer build and supply its in game airforce....

My opinion is you got a really bad die roll. Every once in a while, I see extreme results in ground combat. I usually don't notice them much when I win, but when they go against me....As an anecdote, I just had a single IJA division in X3 terrain and level 4 forts generate over 11,000 in AV against 5 Allied divisions. It was not pretty. On the other hand, I routinely have 2 Marine divisions crush an IJA division in short order even when dug in in X2 terrain...

If you haven't yet decided to withdraw from Iwo Jima, have you considered bringing in more tanks and withdrawing the infantry so you
get a better AV/troop # ratio? Tanks are also less affected by enemy bombing and artillery fire. If you can get enough tanks on the island
you should be able to keep supply up and grind his forces down.
Can't think of any down side to using tanks except the initial landing difficulties.

CENTPAC: DISASTER ON IWO JIMA

Post by racndoc »

Wirraway_Ace.....thanx for the info on the P-51Ds. I guess that I just read too many books about how the P-51s won the air war over Germany. I also agree with you that the land combat results on Iwo Jima were affected by a series of horrendous die rolls....1200 AV that should have been 2x in a shock attack somehow was reduced to an AV of 77. And from here on out....Allied operations will focus more on economic strangulation of Japan vs military advances.

BBfanboy.... I could send in a lot more armor if I decide to assault Iwo Jima again but they will need to be prepped fro 90 days or so first....maybe after I take Manila I can prep some of the armor massed there.

SS Jack is sunk by E boats by Aogashima.

SS Bonefish is sunk by a Japanese ASW TF off Hachijo-jima.

SS Plaice sinks DD Kazegumo near Tokara Retto.

SS Scorpion sinks E No.205 by Aogashima.

CENTPAC

Fifth Fleet has departed from the Bonins and left the remnants of US Eighth Army to their fate... although we still outnumber the Japanese on Iwo Jima and the LCUs there have over 100,000 supplies embedded in them. We've mined Iwo Jima, Haha jima and Chichi jima so IJN resupply convoys should have a little surprise waiting for them when they return to the Bonins.

SWPAC: BATTLE FOR LUZON

SWPAC has been quietly prepping for the final battle for Luzon with the surrounded Japanese garrison at Manila. Fifth Fleet will provide several hundred surface ships for a naval bombardment of Manila when we launch the climatic battle. Hundreds of tac/medium/heavy bombers hit the Japanese at manila every turn. The Japanese must be running low on supplies here finally as our ground bombardments are facing little resistance.

In northern Luzon....Laoag is expanded to a level 4 AF while Tueguegarao is enlarged to a level 7 AF.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND

The B-29s massed in the Marianas launch their first strategic bombing raid of Japan. The target was manpower in Yokohama as over 300 B-29s execute a night attack at 10,000'. The fire levels in Yokohama got as high as 8000 and were still over 1000 at the end of the turn. We managed to damage 13 HI, 3 refineries and 8 shipyard in the aerial attack for a total of about 70 points.

Next turn SAC will target manpower at Osaka.

SS Sunfish is sunk by E boats off Torishima.

SS Springer is sunk by E boats near Chichi-jima.

SS Plaice is sunk by E boats by Tokara Retto.

Allied sub losses are escalating due to the way the game models the E boats with their ASW launchers and reloads. Im suffering very heavy sub losses right now....almost like the RL Kriegsmarine in WWII.... but I have to keep up the pressure on the Japanese economy at all costs from the sea and the air if I am going to be able to cause it to implode.

TASK GROUP 58

Allied fast carriers stage a hit and run attack on the critically important level 6 Japanese AF at Daito Shoto. Four IJN xAKs are sunk in port and the Japanese lose 58 AC in A2A combat vs Allied losses of 17 AC.

STRATEGIC BOMBING COMMAND

This turn SAC strikes Osaka with over 300 B-29s at 10,000' in a night manpower air strike. The Japanese have maybe 15 night fighters on CAP so it becomes a "milk run". Only 2 B-29s are lost and they create a 10,000 plus firestorm. The Japanese suffer a 920 strategic point loss this turn as Osaka is left with over a 1500 firestorm at the end of the turn....and SAC only flew on the first day of the turn due to inclement weather. In just one single night mission the Japanese lose 150 LI, 10 resources, 176 HI, 35 refinery, 11 shipyard, 4 vehicle assembly, 7 Frank, 4 Frances and 1 Grace factory damage.

Ive attached a screenshot of Japan. I have 7-8 long range photo recon missions over the major cities of Japan and Ive caused Japan to withdraw their the majority of their fighters from the periphery of the Pacific to Homeland defense. In addition... Japan is forced to base a couple of hundred fighters from Okinawa to Amami Oshima to try to LRCAP Daito Shoto.... hence the Allied fast carrier airstrike on Daito Shoto this turn.

We are also in the process of a complete reorganization of Allied bomber formations. The medium bombers become our Double A air groups, the B-24s become the Triple A air groups and the B-29s become the major league air groups. The 50-60 EXP and 60-70 ground bombing skill pilots are all promoted to B-24s while the 70-80 EXP and 80-90 ground bombing skill pilots are all promoted to B-29s.

The B-29 squadrons are shooting down many more night fighters than they are losing and several bomber pilots are on the verge of becoming aces.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND

The B-29s were ordered to strike Osaka again but were grounded by the inclement weather....the light rain that was forecast turned into thunderstorms.

However.... the fires that were started in Osaka 4 days ago continued to burn throughout the turn and another 200 HI were damaged. The Allies score another 300 strategic points from the ongoing fire.

Next turn the B-29s will be ordered to strike Tokyo.

SWPAC captures Manila... the last Japanese held base on Luzon. There are still over 95,000 IJA troops with over 400 guns and 200 AFVs surrounded at Manila. The Allied troops are exhausted and suffered heavy casualties themselves so they will rest for a couple of turns before assaulting the Japanese again.

Dave got in a naval airstrike on Fifth Fleet off Manila. In yet another display of leaky CAP over 600 Allied carrier fighters couldnt stop a Japanese strike of 42 bombers escorted by 35 fighters:

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND: DESTINATION TOKYO

Over 300 B-29s hit Tokyo for the 2nd turn in a row. There were severe storms over Tokyo on the first night of the turn and a level 8743 fire was created. The weather cleared on the 2nd night and a level 18,260 fire was started. Japan suffers another 1000 strategic points of damage for a total of 2400 points after 4 turns of night bombing. The USAAF loses another 9 B-29s to flak, ops and A2A combat but Japan loses another 60 night fighters. The USAAF B-29s have their first bomber crew that reaches "ace" status. Over a dozen other B-29 crews are right behind with 4 kills apiece.

Tokyo now has over 600 of its original 2600 HI damaged and a level 3400 fire is still burning. Bad weather is forecast for Tokyo next turn so the B-29s are placed on "Commander decision" for the first time.

SS RO-112 is bombed in port at Takao.

SS Boya sinks PB Ryusei Maru near Tourane.

SWPAC: BATTLE FOR LUZON

SWPAC troops rest at Manila while tac, medium and heavy bombers train their relatively green crews by target practice on the surrounded Japanese at Manila. All of the most experienced bomber pilots in the game have been promoted to the B-29s and I think that it is showing up the performance of the Superfortresses.... more on that later.

Dave has a couple of large convoys off the southern coast of China. The B-25s tried to interdict but the escorts didnt fly and the B-25s were decimated. Im moving a couple more P-51D squadrons to the area for more escorts.... as well as more B-25 squadrons.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND: COMMANDER DECISION

Well the "Commander" didnt make very good decisions as it chose a couple of small, insignificant city targets that had not been reconned. The "Commander" chose to bomb Chiba and Tottori. Chiba in particular was a poor choice as its adjacent to both Tokyo and Yokohama and the CAP for both cities drifted over the target. I lost another 9 B-29s with no damage inflicted at either Chiba or Tottori. Fortunately... the fires are still burning at Tokyo and SAC scores another 2200 strategic points from the raging fires for a total of 4614 startegic bombing points. Tokyo now has nearly 1000 HI and 500 HI damaged. Im going back to targeting Tokyo next turn as good weather is forecast.

Im losing more B-29s that Im gaing in replacements.... about 9 per turn(2 days) but Im still able to put 289 B-29s into the air. I think that Dave has under produced night fighters and the ones that are flying are being shot down in huge numbers by the B-29s so I need to fly as many missions now as possible before Dave can ramp up his night fighter production.... even to the point of exhaustion of the B-29 squadrons. Major Billing's B-29 became the 2nd bomber " ace" of the war as they shot down 3 night fighters for a total of 6 kills.

I didnt see very good results in my 1st game of WitP in regards to strategic bombing of Japan via B-29s based in the Marianas. They seemed to require too much maintenance and repair to keep up an adequately robust operational tempo and their contribution to the strategic bombing of Japan was insignificant compared to that of the B-24s stationed on Okinawa, Amami Oshima and other small islands just off the coast of Japan.

This game.... my continuous carriers debacles from leaky CAP will prevent from capturing bases right off the Japanese coast....so Im stuck with B-29s flying in from the Marianas. However... I "harvested" all the best bomber pilots from the medium bomber and B-24 squadrons and now the B-29s are manned by low 80/high 70 exp pilots with 90/80 ground bomb skill and 60/70 defensive skill... and they are literally shooting the Japanese night fighters out of the sky while mostly flying their damaged air frames back to safety while scoring remarkable bomb accuracy.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND

Nearly 300 B-29s launch another night manpower bomb attack on Tokyo. With favorable weather.... the B-29s ignite a level 51,495 firestorm on the first day of the turn and a level 60,960 firestorm on the 2nd day of the turn. Tokyo is left with a level 9189 fire at the end of the turn and the Allies score another 1100 strategic bombing points.

I want to bomb Osaka but the weather over the city has been atrocious for the past week so we will continue to target Tokyo.

SWPAC:BATTLE FOR lUZON

After resting for 2 turns...... SWPAC will assault the 80,000 remaining Japanese at Manila next turn.

The CVEs and all the surface ships head back to port for maintenance and repairs. Dave gives them a final parting shot with a night attack near Guiuan:

SS Torbay strikes a mine and sinks off Singapore.

STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND

Nearly 300 B-29s launch a night manpower bombing attack at Tokyo. The firestorm reaches 51,000 fire level on the 1st day of the turn but inclement weather grounds the B-29s on the 2nd day of the turn. The good news is we only lost 2 B-29s this turn. Another 530 points of strategic damage are inflicted for a total of 6380 strategic damage points. The other good news is that with the grounding due to poor weather on the 2nd day of the turn..... there are over 300 B-29s available for strategic bombing next turn. A level 1900 fire continues to rage at Tokyo. Dave is out of town for a week so I have a few days to plan the next SAC mission.

CENTPAC: BATTLE FOR IWO JIMA

We laid minefields all across the Bonins to slow down Japanese reinforcement and resupply at Iwo Jima, Haha-jima and Chichi-jima. Dave sent in AMcs to sweep the mines and MLs to lay his own minefields. This turn I sent in DMS's to sweep the minefields and they sank 2 IJN MLs and a PB. Transport AC are flying in supplies to CENTPAC troops on Iwo Jima but we are running short and a major naval supply op will be required in the next month.

Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Manila

Japan has only 2 LCUs with 4000 troops remaining at Manila. I will shut down all the heavy bomber ground attacks here next turn as SWPAC delivers the coup de grace.

I have attached a screenshot with all the rapidly expanding Allied AFs on northern Luzon.

THE AIR WAR

Post by racndoc »

12/24/44

Dave is out of town for the week so I thought that Id update on the game score and the air war. Currently the Allies have a "minor" victory with a point advantage of 82,374 to 58,484. I will need at least another 40,000 points to achieve a 2:1 point ratio.

THE AIR WAR

Japan has lost a total of 35,626 AC vs Allied losses of 27,209 AC. In A2A combat...... Japan has lost 19,831 AC vs Allied losses of 11,440 AC. Ive attached a screenshot of Japanese plane losses by type. Its notable that late model Japanese fighters such as the Frank and George are relatively high up on the list.

12/24/44..... THE AIR WAR CONTINUED

And here is a screenshot of Allied plane losses by type. The C-47s are in first place..... no surprise there... and almost all of the losses have been due to ops. The top fighter in terms of losses is now a Navy fighter.... the F6F-3 Hellcat.... I was a bit surprised by that but then the Navy has done the bulk of the aerial combat since the start of 1944. Even more surprising.... the TBF-1 Avenger and the SBD-5 Dauntless are in 2nd and 3rd place.

How are you using the C-47s? Is it just the hump that gives this amount of ops losses? Do you fly them with rest in normal range?

I found the Japanese version, the Tabby, to be really sturdy and didn't have too many ops losses if I kept a percentage rest and stayed in normal range. Curious now as I embark on an Allied campaign.

THE AIR WAR

obvert..... Im flying the C-57s at normal range.... never at extended range. However, i have probably 40-50 transport AC airgroups flying supplies over the hump and I dont have the time to micromanage them... ie check them for fatigue and then resting them. I save all that micromanagement for the fighter and bomber squadrons.

THE AIR WAR

And finally here is a screenshot of the top Allied aces. Its all USAAF and USMC pilots now....not a single Navy or RAF pilot among them. I was a bit surprised since Navy fighter losses were ramping up and I expected at least a couple of Navy "Top Gun" pilots. The motto for my WitP air forces is "fly until you die".

RE: SWPAC: BATTLE FOR LUZON

Post by racndoc »

12/25-12/26/44

SAC

The B-29s are ordered to night bomb Kobe this turn. They dont sortie on the 1st day of the turn but execute a manpower strike on Kobe on the 2nd day of the turn. We manage to ignite a level 54,000 fire at Kobe but we only score about 400 strategic bombing points this turn for a total of 6752 strategic bombing points. 15 B-29s are lost in the attack.... mostly to ops. These are the heaviest loses of the war for the B-29s for a single mission. I should probably rest them for a bit but clear weather is forecast over Nagoya so they will attack again tonight.

SWPAC: VICTORY ON LUZON

SWPAC troops overrun the remaining Japanese troops at Manila and now Luzon has been completely secured by the Allies. This marks the culmination of of a 12 month offensive by SWPAC that has advanced from central New Guinea on 1/1/44 to the DEI and the Philippines by the end of the year.

The big question now is what to do now with the 20 plus Allied divisions on Luzon. After the fiasco at Iwo Jima..... fragments of 6 divisions trying to hold on with the Japanese still in control of the small island..... at a cost of 22 CVEs/CVLs/CVs hit by Japanese naval bombers during the landings... Im not sure if I will follow through with the planned landings on Okinawa, Amami Oshima and other small islands off the coast of the Japanese Home Islands.

One poster on this thread suggested landing the Allied troops on Luzon at a friendly controlled port on the Chinese coast... I could do this at Kwangchowan and then advance on Canton/Hong Kong. That actually makes a lot of sense but Im still focused on acquiring more airfields within range of the Japanese Home Islands. I may just end up moving the chains forward a few yards at a time as opposed to a long bomb type of invasion.

Meanwhile... the build up continues on massive new airfields in northern Luzon. There has been very little Japanese aerial activity over SE Asia and China as it appears that Dave has pulled back most of his air forces for defense of the Home Islands. The critically important Japanese level 6 AF at Daito Shoto has been repaired but it remains abandoned by Japanese air forces as the Allies can easily shut it down at any time from their airfields in northern Luzon. Dave was still basing fighters however at Naha on Okinawa. Last turn we swept Okinawa with over 100 P-51Ds and they do much better as high altitude sweepers than as bomber escorts.... Japan loses 33 AC in A2A combat vs 3 Allied AC. Altogether Japan loses 96 AC this turn vs 52 Allied AC.
