Unable to detach ships from group

I simply may be doing it wrong.

However, when I press the D key, I am unable to select the displayed ships in a group.

I've done this by pulling up the Formation Editor for the group, THEN selecting the unit icon in the main window, then hitting D. If/when this is successful you should see the "Station" notation and diamond disappear and then when you close the FE window the unit should be on its own.
