Barrages/Airstrikes etc @ Steve McClaire

Post by Kilovski »

Will the AI use any Airstrikes/Barrages at its disposal. One of the most annoying aspects of the CC5 engine and its various iterations is it never or only occasionally uses these powerful assets, ie CC5 when playing as the Germans against an Allied AI, it never uses Naval Barrages to support landing troops. If as I understand a new AI is being developed for this game, can this issue be looked at. BTW this is the fourth time I've asked this question without getting any kind of reply [&:]

Sorry, this is the first time I've seen it. I sometimes don't manage to read and reply to every post in threads like the 'Wish List' though.

The AI will be new, and I'd like to improve this area. In the existing engine the AI tends to hold on to powerful support missions like air and naval until it sees a really juicy target like a high-value tank or several units bunched up in a small area. These aren't always present in every battle, though.

So you're saying that the AI is picky when to use arty or an airstrike?

I think it really is dependent on time. At least on custom battles. It uses naval barrages right away, mortar at about 10min mark and air support around 12-15 minutes.

I think I only played once as germans vs american AI in stock CC5 a very long time ago so I don't remember if the american AI actually uses the naval barrage in campaign or any other support assets for that matter.

If the AI chooses targets based on importance or that it chooses to NOT use it because there's no good target, I don't know but I doubt it. I would like to be proven wrong though. [;)]

Yes. The original code looks at the value of the enemy teams the AI can see, and it will only use air or naval if the value in the target area is high enough. This does make it so the AI doesn't waste a naval barrage on one ersatz team, but it is pretty simple decision making.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. Along with the time required for the strike to happen seems to add some realism into the game.
