Weihaiwei is missing

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Hello, slightly off topic question

I notice that the port of Weihaiwei is missing on the WITPAE map... was this port irrelevant by WW2 time era?

I am reading a book on the Sino-Japanese of 1895; and it was important in this era. It was the Beiyang's fleet anchorage). then later it became a British colony (Port Edward); and it was one of the two "keys" to Peiping (the other one being Port Arthur)

That said, I am just curious on why it is missing; because it's inclusion is completely irrelevant in terms of gameplay, since the yellow sea was a Japanese lake by 1941.

Most likely it is in the game under another name, or as part of another 'base'. Maybe have a look at where it is and what it is close to??

yes you are right; the closest base is "Chefoo"

Weihaiwei should fall on hex 98 47

A few years ago I went through all (what at the time was) something like 1,859 bases in Babes extended map scenario and looked up the latitude and longitude of every one of them, put them in a file and mapped them out on Google Earth. When I did that I discovered that in a fair number of cases I had to make judgements about where exactly to place the marker, as the base name in question did not really line up. Consider a base that has a city's name, and the base is both port and airfield. But in real life that city does not have a port, it's a few miles inland. The port is another city/town. The designers had to take into account the 46 (statute) mile wide hex size, and were limited to one base and base name per hex, so many places got aggregated together.

They also had to deal with the boundaries of those 46 statute mile/40 nautical mile hexes. In real life a place might be 403 (nautical) miles away. In the game that is 11 hexes. In cases where that relationship is important because of airplane ranges or ship speed or whatever, the designers might 'move' the place to be only 10 hexes away.

A number of bases/ports are combined into one hex. A few that come to mind are the port of San Luis and Morro Bay in California. Both are part of the San Luis Obispo hex. The port of San Luis is actually in the town of Avilla Beach. The port of Los Angeles is actually in San Pedro, CA. Up in Washington the Seattle hex includes the bases in Seattle as well as Paine Field in Everett. Paine Field is where the 747, 777, and 787 are built today, but back then it was a USAAF base. The Bakersfield base force is for Minter Field in Shafter up the road about 20 miles. I believe what is now the city's airport was also a USAAF field during the war.

The hexes which can be built up to level 8 or 9 air bases in most cases represent complexes of bases spread out over the entire hex. Ports too can represent multiple real world ports in a hex.

I don't know that much about bases on the Asian mainland, but there are many more examples than I just cited in the US.

Weihaiwei is considered part of Chefoo, as shown by the RGC Weihaiwei base force in Chefoo.

I bet there's games out there that show Roma as a port, when the port really is at Civitavecchia.

An important reminder, as this fact is often ignored when discussing base sizes.

Quite right LST, Perth is about 10 miles up river from Fremantle and in those days would have been quite separate though today the urban sprawl has filled up the whole area. The 'Fremantle fort' is actually an amalgam of different batteries that were around there at the time, some on the coast and some on Rottnest Is about 10 miles offshore. All fit within a 46 mile hex as one 'complex'.
