RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
27 Apr 42 - 28 Apr 42 Executive Summary
AirGriff continues makes some other small gains but most of the work now is clean up to ensure he does not leave any base hexes in his rear. I am pretty sure he is up to something just not sure what right now. It may be a couple of days before the next turn as AirGriff has a busy work week.
Operation Chex
Is completed, all of the units unloaded in two days but the supplies will take two more days. The battle was a massive case of overkill details in a different post.
Raiding
Sub attack near Port Moresby xAK Okiyu Maru, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage vs SS S-42.
Sub attack near Truk PB Tama Maru #8, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage vs SS Tautog.
Java
No Activity but just a matter of time.
China
After looking at all of the options here we realize we still have 29K of resources. As we don't generate more resources in the hex while he is present --- my factories will consume the ones present and generate supply to allow the fight here to go on. While you can't run Japan out of resources I can work to make him ship them from a far away as possible to burn fuel whenever I can.
Dora the Explorer
First off this is a breakfast cereal, if you knew this you have munchkins under the age of eight. It's sort of like Caption Crunch but with small stars. I have one US Inf Div, One US Inf Reg, two Combat Eng Reg and three US Art Bat's ready to go with preparation in the low-30's to mid-50's and climbing. Will require the carrier fleet and the fall of Christmas Island. There are 63 Heavy Bombers out of Pago Pago and Savaii that have started bombing airfield, damage is at 57. He has a reported 7.1K of troops on the 6K island. Airfield Level 2 Port Level 3. This will be launched if the KB is committed elsewhere or with the arrival of the Wasp and the repair of the Enterprise.
KB and Mini-KB
Mini-KB + KB (?) were last seen supporting the Horn Island Invasion a while ago. Location unknown but due to radio traffic and the need for him to upgrade/repair/rearm expect it it all at Truk.
Operation Captain Crunch
The 84th Indian Inf Bde, 3rd Hyderabad Base Force and the 223rd Group Base Force are unloading at Cocos Islands and will be done in two days. The Hermes Taffy is providing escort and the 4 Slow British BB's are now in route just in case.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
Ground combat at Christmas Island (174,141)
Classic case of overkill. The good news is that we unloaded all of the combat troops in one day so it seems that I have at least figured out a good rule of thumb on amphibious lift needed. As it will also take four days in total to unload all of the supplies this is also good information to have.
The main purpose of this activity to learn how to move all of the parts of the machine seems to have been a success. Next time we hit a major base we will know a lot more.
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 11339 troops, 204 guns, 123 vehicles, Assault Value = 384
Defending force 49 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1
Allied adjusted assault: 330
Japanese adjusted defense: 1
Allied assault odds: 330 to 1 (fort level 2)
Allied forces CAPTURE Christmas Island !!!
Combat modifiers
Defender:
Attacker: shock(+)
Japanese ground losses:
40 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units destroyed 1
Assaulting units:
40th Infantry Division
110th Cmbt Engineer Battalion
223rd Field Artillery Battalion
Defending units:
Yokosuka 4th SNLF /1

The Kaga, Lives!!!
Well, we knew this day would come....... Intel is now reporting the Kaga is still in action but the Akagi was lost. This would track with the damage reports from the battle so I am feeling better about this.
Damage Totals:
CV Zuikaku, Bomb hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
Ammo storage explosion on CV Zuikaku
CV Akagi, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
Ammo storage explosion on CV Akagi
CV Shokaku, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires
CV Soryu, Torpedo hits 1
Given the above damage --- at best he would have lost the Zuikaku, Akagi and Shokaku, three CV's. Granted Intel is often wrong as to which one/ones are actually lost but I feel pretty good that he is down two CV's.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
I'm still doubtful on Akagi sinking. Those bombs just don't do much damage and Akagi is a tougher ship than the other Jap CVs. The ammo explosion might be as much as two torps, and that just isn't enough. Who knows though. Zuikaku might still be afloat too - again, no torpedo hits.

I won't disagree, which is why I need to wait for the Enterprise and Wasp or a committed KB to execute Dora the Explore.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
As I continue to learn about the game, I realize all how much I simply don;t know. As I've just hit May 1st 1942 I am now starting to receive the TBF-1 Avenger torpedo plane. Now, looking at this plane and the TBM-1C I notice that the TBF has better max speed, range and climb but in all other aspects there the TBM is better (guns, cruise speed, altitude, etc).
Do people keep using TBF-1 as it has that extra hex of range until they drain there pools or is there something else that is nice about the -1C version.

29 Apr 42 - 04 May 42 Executive Summary
AirGriff continues makes some other small gains but most of the work now is clean up to ensure he does not leave any base hexes in his rear. He did however derail Operation Apple Jacks. I am pretty sure he is up to something just not sure what right now. It may be a couple of days before the next set of turns due to the holiday and possible PC issues on his end.
Raiding
Sub attack near Noumea SS I-29 vs TK Juno, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage (sunk)
Sub attack near Port Moresby xAK Okiyu Maru, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage vs SS S-42
Sub attack near Truk PB Tama Maru #8, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage vs SS Tautog
ASW attack near Davao Japanese Ships vs SS KXVI, hits 4
Submarine attack near Dadjangas Japanese Ships vs SS KXVI, hits 15, and is sunk
Fleet of Doom.
USN CAR DIV 1, USN CAR DIV 2, USN CAR DIV 3, USN CAR DIV 4, Force H, Force Z and USN 1st Bat Div are all in port at Pearl for minor repairs. Ready to sail in fours days, to support operations.
Java
Some air battles around Batavia, Dutch surfaces force retires to Perth to then redeploy to the Southwest Pacific theater.
China
After looking at all of the options here we realize we still have 28K of resources. As we don't generate more resources in the hex while he is present --- my factories will consume the ones present and generate supply to allow the fight here to go on. While you can't run Japan out of resources I can work to make him ship them from a far away as possible to burn fuel whenever I can. He ran a small bomber raid on the 3rd of May escorted by some Zero's. I am moving a Chinese ACU with Twelve I-15s into the hex to defend (Average Exp 53, Air 70). He also ran two sweeps with Oscars into Changsha on the 3rd of May vs my best AVG unit details below.
Dora the Explorer
First off this is a breakfast cereal, if you knew this you have munchkins under the age of eight. It's sort of like Caption Crunch but with small stars. Mini-KB + KB (?) were last seen supporting the Horn Island Invasion a while ago. Location unknown but due to radio traffic and the need for him to upgrade/repair/rearm expect it it all at Truk.

The 84th Indian Inf Bde, 3rd Hyderabad Base Force and the 223rd Group Base Force have unloaded at the Cocos Islands. The Hermes Taffy is providing escort along with the 4 Slow British BB's Taffy as the lift withdraws to Madras in India.
Operation Apple Jacks
Looks like this is going to become an area where we may have some low intensity combat. He landed at Ndeni one day ahead of my force, wisely my task force commander from Luganville did not force a landing in the face of his some SCS escort force. We have instead landed the Vanikoro this is a 0(0) Port and 0(4). This is one less port and one less airfield then Ndeni, it also means the P-38's will be near max normal range for Guadalcanal (well within the 14 drop tank range). The 1st Marine Raider Bn and the 8th Marine Def Bn are almost fully ashore. The 1st US Naval Construction Bn, 13th MAG HQ and the Del Monte AAF Base Force start landing next turn. More planing details to follow later.
Operation Honeycomb
Planing for this operation is now underway. This operation will occur at the same time as Dora the Explorer or shortly there after. Assuming the KB or Mini-KB are located elsewhere it will happen at the same time, otherwise it will follow Dora. The 40th US Infantry Division, 110th Combat Engr Bn and the 223rd FA Bn will attack Baker Island from Christmas Island. All units are prepping and are at 29%.

China Air Operations
This is the second time the Oscars show up in China. Both the Ia and Ib models are seen. We trade three Oscars for one H81-A3 with no Pilot loss on our side. The AVG unit in Rangoon was upgraded to P-40Es to free up replacement H81-A3s. In the next 16 days I should be able to field one additional 12 plan Chines ACU (Exp ~45, Air 70) with the I-16-IIIs as needed in China. Two AVG ACU's are still in China one in Changsha and the other in Kewllin.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
Operation Apple Jacks
One day late and a dollar short, so here is the new plan --- turn this into a battle of attrition to regain Ndeni. The first phase is to get the Port to Level 1, the airfield to Level 1 and then expand the fortification/airfield to max. One we have the port to LEvel 1 at Vanikoro we will also deply an AGP, ACM, PT boats and 150 mines.
Luganville is safe with Forts Level 3 and Two CD LCUs. There is an ACM and 150 mines in route to add some additional cover. If I can come up with the PT boats I will also add some here but this may take a while as I have a bunch of them in the Line Islands.
In the next 30 days or sooner the following will occur to support the advance on Ndeni in Phase 2:
1) See notes above about Mines, PT Boats, ACMs, AGP, etc.
2) Two Base Force units will deploy from Pago Pago to Lugnaville for additional aviation support.
3) The medium range bombers from Pago Pago will deploy to Lugnaville to smash the airfields or Ports that are built on Ndeni.
4) Additional units will be found to add to the 7th Marine Reg, 641st Towed TD Bn and the 4th FA Bn that are now prepping for Ndeni (25% and counting).
5) As we have sufficient lift now at the Line Islands for our operations there all new invasion lift will deploy to Suva where the land units for the invasion shall gather.
6) In two days the Enterprise Fighter ACU will upgrade to F4F-4s, this will free up one F4F-3 (woot so not a big deal). However this means over the next 30 days the F4F-4s that arrive will upgrade the Hornet Fighter ACU and the the Saratago Fighter ACU, this will start a trickle down of fighters to the Marine that will free up two Marine Fighter ACUs with F2A-2 Buffalo's to add to the air war in the Santa Cruz Islands.
7) There are two US 25 Figher ACU's located in Brisbane, Noumea, Lugnaville, Suva, Savaii and Pago Pago that can be rotated in as need to Vanikora for air cover.
The goal is to turn this into a front where we can bring the same amount or more force into play and drain him of plans, supplies and pilots. I want to see if I can use up my current model airplanes before they cannot be used on the front lines in early 1943. The 1st Marine Raider Bn and the 8th Marine Def Bn are almost fully ashore. The 1st US Naval Construction Bn, 13th MAG HQ and the Del Monte AAF Base Force start landing next turn.

Dora the Explorer
After looking at all of the factors - the D-Day for this operation is now around 18th of June. The Wasp arrived in Balboa on the 6th of June and will proceed directly to the front. It will meet its surface forces in route along with a replenishment taffy.
The time will be used to complete the following -
A) Upgrade the Enterprise and Hornet to F4F-4's, this will allow us to also upgrade two of the Marine ACU's from the F2A-2 Buffalo's and allow the use of the Buffalo's for Apple Jacks. I will only get enough for two ACU's as the Enterpise Fighter ACU only has one Plane in it as it was stripped of planes when it went in for repair.
B)Locate a Marine Fighter ACU and surface forces for the CVE Long Island and move the them to Fanning Island.
C) Get the preparation of all LCUs to 100%.
D) The hope is he puts some of his CV's in for the June upgrade and assumes I put my two CV's in for their 42 day June upgrade.
Units
One US Inf Div, One US Inf Reg, two Combat Eng Reg and three US Art Bat's ready to go with preparation in the low-30's to mid-50's and climbing. Will require the use of the Fleet of Doom. There are 63 Heavy Bombers out of Pago Pago and Savaii that have started bombing airfield, damage is at 69. He has a reported 7.1K of troops on the 6K island in seven units. Airfield Level 2 Port Level 3.
This operation will also be launched if the KB is committed elsewhere, it is estimated it will take six days from a go order to begin the landing.

THE BATTLE OF BORNEO --- Update
Intel has finally updated the status of the battle, we had both the Kongo and Haruna reported as sunk around the 24th of December 1941. Now, the Haruna is reported as in action. From the email exchanges at the time I think I got at least on BB, maybe two as at the time he had no ports withing ten hexes. Even if I did not get any of the BBs - the fact he had to halt operations for two weeks to bring the Mini-KB to bear made it worth the effort.
Total Damage from the Battle
BB Kongo, Shell hits 6, heavy fires
BB Haruna, Shell hits 3, on fire
BB Yamashiro, Shell hits 21, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage

05 May 42 - 06 May 42 Executive Summary
Not much occurs in these two days, I expect some fireworks in Java and Burma at some point along with at least one surprise..
Raiding
Submarine attack near Tulagi xAK Yomei Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage vs SS KXII
Fleet of Doom.
USN CAR DIV 1, USN CAR DIV 2, USN CAR DIV 3, USN CAR DIV 4, Force H, Force Z and USN 1st Bat Div are all in port at Pearl for minor repairs. Ready to sail in two days, to support operations.
KB and Mini-KB
Mini-KB + KB (?) were last seen supporting the Horn Island Invasion a while ago. Location unknown but due to radio traffic and the need for him to upgrade/repair/rearm expect it it all at Truk.
Java
No activity at this time.
China
After looking at all of the options here we realize we still have 29k of resources in Wenchow. As we don't generate more resources in the hex while he is present --- my factories will consume the ones present and generate supply to allow the fight here to go on. While you can't run Japan out of resources I can work to make him ship them from a far away as possible to burn fuel whenever I can. I moved a Chinese ACU with Twelve I-15s into the Wenchow to defend (Average Exp 53, Air 70). I am also hold Chuhsien and I am receiving resources over the road from here until he blocks the road or moves into Chuhsien.
Dora the Explorer
First off this is a breakfast cereal, if you knew this you have munchkins under the age of eight. It's sort of like Captain Crunch but with small stars. Airfield Level 2 Port Level 3. This operation will also be launched if the KB is committed elsewhere, it is estimated it will take six days from a go order to begin the landing.
The time will be used to complete the following -
A) Upgrade the fighters on the Saratoga and Hornet to F4F-4's, this will allow us to also upgrade the Marine ACU's from the F2A-2 Buffalo's and allow the use of the Buffalo's for Apple Jacks.

Operation Captain Crunch
The 84th Indian Inf Bde, 3rd Hyderabad Base Force and the 223rd Group Base Force have unloaded at the Cocos Islands. The Hermes Taffy is providing escort along with the 4 Slow British BB's Taffy as the lift withdraws to Madras in India.
Operation Apple Jacks

Planing for this operation is now underway. This operation will occur at the same time as Dora the Explorer or shortly there after. Assuming the KB or Mini-KB are located elsewhere it will happen at the same time, otherwise it will follow Dora. The 40th US Infantry Division, 110th Combat Engr Bn and the 223rd FA Bn will attack Baker Island from Christmas Island. All units are prepping and are at 29%.

07 May 42 - 10 May 42 Executive Summary
Lots of activity, Dora the Explore is a go with the spotting of some carriers in near Java, assumed to be the KB. A little touch and go at Wenchow but we hold long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
Raiding
Sub attack near Kuching ACM Tasei Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage vs SS Sealion
Fleet of Doom.
USN CAR DIV 1, USN CAR DIV 2, USN CAR DIV 3, USN CAR DIV 4, Force H, Force Z and USN 1st Bat Div are all in port at Pearl about to sail to Canton, USN 1st Bat Div with four DMS will bombard Canton while the others with provide cover.
KB and Mini-KB
Mini-KB (?) + KB (?) north of Java, not sure if one or both are present.
Java
Massive air battles over the island over the last four days, Zeros and Oscars pretty much rule the air. At this rate the Dutch Air Force will be gone in ten days. Dutch Air Force is stood day to rest for the next turn.

Airfield Level 2 Port Level 3. This operation was launched as the KB/Mini-KB is committed elsewhere, it is estimated it will take six days from a go order to begin the landing.
One day late and a dollar short, so here is the new plan --- turn this into a battle of attrition to regain Ndeni. The first phase is to get the Port at Vanikoro to Level 1, the airfield to Level 1 and then expand the fortification/airfield to max. One we have the port to LEvel 1 at Vanikoro we will also deply an AGP, ACM, PT boats and 150 mines. The Port is currently 0-19% and climbing.
6) Atrickle down of fighters to the four Marine ACUs at Pago Pago has started. As ACUs with the F2A-2 Buffalo's are filled out they will be added to the air war over the Santa Cruz Islands.
7) There are two US 25 Figher ACU's located in Brisbane, Noumea, Lugnaville, Suva, Savaii and Pago Pago that can be rotated in as need to Vanikora for air cover.
The goal is to turn this into a front where we can bring the same amount or more force into play and drain him of planes, supplies and pilots.
Operation Honeycomb
Planing for this operation is now underway. This operation will occur at the same time as Dora the Explorer or shortly there after. The 40th US Infantry Division, 110th Combat Engr Bn and the 223rd FA Bn will attack Baker Island from Christmas Island. All units are prepping and are at 29%.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
11 May 42 - 14 May 42 Executive Summary
Lots of activity, Dora the Explore is a go with the spotting of some carriers in near Java, assumed to be the KB and/or Mini-KB. At this point I am five days from landing at Canton Island for Dora the Explorer. An attempt was made to intercept his CV's with submarines and PT boats but this failed when his BB's intercepted me.
Raiding
Sub attack near Efate SS RO-62 vs CM Krakatau, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage (sinks but had dropped off its mines)
Sub attack near Finschhafen xAK Lima Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire vs SS S-47
TF 27 encounters mine field at Luganville SSX Ha-4, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damag
Fleet of Doom.
USN CAR DIV 1, USN CAR DIV 2, USN CAR DIV 3, USN CAR DIV 4, Force H, Force Z and USN 1st Bat Div are one day out from refueling at Palmyra. The USN 1st Bat Div with four DMS will bombard Canton while the others with provide cover.
KB and Mini-KB
Mini-KB (?) + KB (?) north of Java, not sure if one or both are present. Confirmed in the area CVL Shoho, CV Hiryu and CVL Ryujo.
Java
Massive air battles over the island over the last two days, Zeros and Oscars pretty much rule the air. Dutch Fighters will stick around for one more turn and the withdraw, all the bombers have withdrawn. He has taken Semarang and split Java in half.
The Chinese ACU with Twelve I15's at Wenchow finds nothing in the air. I am also hold Chuhsien and I am receiving resources over the road from here until he blocks the road or moves into Chuhsien.
Dora the Explorer
Forces Loading at Fanning Island estimate I will Land in five to six days days. One US Inf Div, One US Inf Reg, two Combat Eng Reg and three US Art Bat's ready to go with preparation in the low-30's to mid-50's and climbing. Will require the use of the Fleet of Doom. There are 71 Heavy Bombers out of Pago Pago and Savaii that have started bombing airfield, damage is at 77. He has a reported 7.2K of troops on the 6K island in seven units. Airfield Level 2 Port Level 3.
Operation Captain Crunch
The 84th Indian Inf Bde, 3rd Hyderabad Base Force and the 223rd Group Base Force have unloaded at the Cocos Islands. Operation complete and all naval assets are back in Colombo.
Operation Apple Jacks
One day late and a dollar short, so here is the new plan --- turn this into a battle of attrition to regain Ndeni. The first phase is to get the Port at Vanikoro to Level 1, the airfield to Level 1 and then expand the fortification/airfield to max. One we have the port to LEvel 1 at Vanikoro we will also deply an AGP, ACM, PT boats and 150 mines. The Port is currently 0-98% and climbing.
Luganville is safe with Forts Level 3, Two CD LCUs, one ACM and 125 mines.
2) One Base Force delpoyed and one more needs to deploy from Pago Pago to Lugnaville for additional aviation support.
6) A trickle down of fighters to the four Marine ACUs at Pago Pago has started.
I want to see if I can use up my current model airplanes before they cannot be used on the front lines in early 1943. The 1st Marine Raider Bn and the 8th Marine Def Bn, 1st US Naval Construction Bn and 13th MAG HQ are fully ashore. The Del Monte AAF Base Force is unloading now.

Dora the Explorer
Given he has 7.2K of troops on the Island, and I don't know the fort level are the following enough to take the hex given they will all land on day one?
Unit (Preparation)
------
134 Combat Eng Bn (80%)
181 FA Bn (59%)
198th FA Bn (44%)
168th FA Bn (61%)
34th Combat Eng Reg (69%)
34th Infantry Reg (69%)
27th Infantry Division (60%)

We will have Six BBs in the USN 1st Bat Div and 3 BB, 1 CA and 5 AMC's with the invasion force to surpress the guns.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff
Many of his 7.2 K troops are likely BFs and AF support units.
You must have close to 25K fighting troops. That should do it.
