What does automated fleet formation do?

I create ships, but they stay independent. So does automated fleet formation make fleets automatically, or something else?

Yes, that setting allows the game to automatically create Fleets.

CPU: Intel 2700K
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: GTX 970
OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)
Res: 1920 x 1200

okay. I guess I am just not seeing it yet. Is there a way to set up what each fleet would be composed of?

I think there are some adjustments for composition in the Policy

CPU: Intel 2700K
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: GTX 970
OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)
Res: 1920 x 1200
