Campaign

So I assume you can only progress in a campaign if you win the battle? Lost twice (conceded defeat actually) in Orlovka now i.e. the first battle in Russian Campaign. I'm on introductory level too. The Panzers just crush me in this one...

Yes you can only continue if you win.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

Thought somebody might say this and was looking for some sympathy too. :-) Maybe I should play to the end and I'll get some reinforcements I haven't seen yet.

Yes that is a tough scenario.... playing the German campaign first is actually better for those who have never played the boardgame before.
You need to wait a bit for the Germans to move so you can kill him in the open.
You need to move from cover to cover, don't spend any time in the open.
Don't move entire stacks at one time unless you are absolutely certain that there are no enemies that can fire at you.

Finally got Orlovka on third try. Patience is a virgin they say. Fine game here.
