Damaging attacks at Chungking. 2,799 AV there.

It's unclear where the KB has got to. They most likely did not sprint NW toward the convoy lanes as there were no attacks and no sightings. But, even if they sprinted in the southern half of the compass they are in areas covered by search, so we know that we missed them wherever they are.

Most units on Saipan have nice low disruption of 10 or less, but two of the USA ID have disruption of 30 and 33, so the attack will wait one more day. The Yap and Marcus convoys are nearing their pick up points. The Agrihan convoys have formed; all Agrihan assaulters are at Guam and Rota. Loading will wait until the Yap and Marcus invasions are on the way.

Scouted troop levels at Maloelap continue to drop. Will a starving garrison vanish before we invade?

Kalao saw a recon plane overhead.

Here are the troops at Saipan.

It looks like the IJN carriers are near Great Nicobar, where they probably were yesterday as well. Uncertain, though.

The troops on Saipan are ready and will attack tomorrow. All battleship TFs are ordered to join the nightly bombardments.

Maloelap looks deserted, so we will send in the troops without further ado. The Yap and Marcus invasions forces are loading. The transport subs can't seem to pick up the troops for Salajar, so they will carry supplies to Kalao instead.

As you can see, the Spitfire pilots at Kalao are earning their pay against sweeping Georges and bombing Helens.

Kalao and Namlea took beatings from the air. We gave as good as we got in the air, but our guys will shortly be overwhelmed. We've pulled out the Spitfire squadron that had only 3 operational aircraft remaining and rotated in another, which made it on duty with 13 up and running. In return our bombers hit Kendari pretty hard, so it will likely make little contribution to subsequent attacks on Kalao.

The Yap invasion force is heading to a rendezvous point; the Marcus invasion force is heading to Truk to pick up escorting forces; the Agrihan invasion force needs a little more preparation time.

Here is the area around Kalao.

Most units at Saipan are ordered to shock attack tomorrow. The 2nd USMC Div still has disruption of 29; the 766 Tank Bn has disruption of 44, so both of those units will sit out the attack. There only being one day between this and the previous attack might allow us to catch the Imperials with extra high disruption. Of course all battleships will join the bombardments.

There were no attacks on Kalao today, so the suppression of Kendari has helped. Namlea was not hit either.

Here is a look at China, notice the number of Imperial units seen to be moving.

All other units will stand down tomorrow, while the USMC division attacks with only the two dedicated artillery units in support. The bombardments (cruisers but no battleships) should be much more effective without the base fortifications to protect the Imperial defenders. The 2nd Marine Division is in good shape (20% fatigue and 9% disruption) after the day off and should meet Imperial troops that are on the ropes after having been defeated today. A port advance base force will begin landing at Saipan tomorrow, but the devastation of the port facilities means that will likely take time. A local mine sweeping TF will move to Saipan during the night.

Kalao was hit from the air today, and there might be an IJN ship or more on the way. The fighters held their own but were bloodied worse by the bombers when on the ground. In return our guys destroyed even more Bettys and Georges on the ground at Kendari, which is well and truly closed to all air traffic save small birds.

There is also undetermined IJN traffic in the Celebes Sea and heading SE, possibly aiming past Manado. Air and small naval forces are rearranged a bit to provide more cover for Boela in case that is a target. The Yap invasion forces are ordered to a point 1 hex SE of Yap for tomorrow, where they will be met by a DD TF from Babeldaob and covered by a P-38 group from there. The fleet carriers will make their way to the scene but will still be at long range by tomorrow.

A supply convoy has been dispatched from San Francisco to Marcus Island. I hope we capture it before they arrive.

Here is the prize.

The attack at Saipan went somewhat poorly, as I was hoping for light casualties on our side. No more attacks this small on the trapped troops. In fact, the Japanese' own bombardment was almost as effective against them! The naval bombardments were ineffective, so the range has been reduced to 10,000 yards for tomorrow. No land attack tomorrow, we'll wait for more supply and a larger force with lowered disruption.

The Yap invasion lands tomorrow, and so far as I can tell it is unseen by the Empire. The Marcus invasion forces will all be at Truk tomorrow to merge, pick up destroyers, and then set out in company with carriers and battleships for protection.

Here is a look at the area centered at Kalao. An IJN TF with at least a CL is heading toward our valiant vanguard. The Spitfire squadrons have been pulled out and the cat squadron moved to Namlea (two AVD on the way), but damaged aircraft remain on the ground.

Our subs got a TK.

Seemed like significantly less than 2,000 casualties at Chungking. 2,760 AV there now.

Same status in Burma: movements continue, no significant enemy naval movements noted. British fighter pilot pools are empty, so two night fighter squadrons have dumped their pilots into the pool and taken on rookies to train.

Hark! A new green light appears in the Marianas. Saipan falls! Excellent.

Your subs are scoring frequently now, especially on tankers. Has the Devious One been compelled to apply heavier escorts? Those tanker losses are going to be a real problem. Nice to have torpedoes that explode.

I had reached 1/4/43 and the torpedoes had just improved (in theory) when my opponent crapped out on me. Sad, as we had invested more than 2 years into the game. Oh well. I'd have played the computer if that was a concern. that is the furtherest I had gone in a PBM game.

I'm not really sure if he has increased escorts or not. I've been holding back some subs, rotating some in and now and then sending in a whole fresh batch as I figure a bunch on patrol are due to get worn out. With new production I now have a number at Truk and I think I am going to re-base them to Guam (I seem able to build up enough fuel at Guam and Rota bases now) and increase the patrol presence in several sectors.

One thing I've found curious is that I am seeing tankers moving on a line south of Okinawa, south of Formosa. I'm not sure if he is trying to avoid subs that he knows are closer to Japan and the Asian mainland or maybe trying to bait in carriers and surface forces to an area he considers favorable for some sort of engagement.

Kendari will be invaded relatively soon, but it will take a little while to finish shuffling forces in from Milne Bay. Forces are prepared for Ternate and Manado but we might bypass them or bypass them at first.

There were Allied amphibious operations at:

Our subs got a TK.

2,725 AV at Chungking. The Empire has noted the lack of fighters at Tsuyung and ambushed our Chinese B-25 (B-25D) raids on Imperial troops along the road south of that city.

Probably 200 or more Franks swept both our base at Bassein and various hexes in the area. We did OK but I would have preferred to lose fewer Spitfire VIII. See tally below. We did some rearranging of squadrons. Still have more we can bring in if need be.

Saipan is now well supplied and the troops rested enough for a general attack tomorrow. After that we will start pulling out divisions to lighten the logistical load of attacks and allow better recovery. Airfield service damage is now 24%, so it looks like the port will begin repairs tomorrow. Naval search out of both Yap and Saipan begins tomorrow.

The Marcus invasion forces continue toward the objective and now a number of cruiser bombardment TFs set out to join them. Three or four days from now will be D-Day.

The Agrihan troops begin loading tomorrow as well. There will be no shock attack required there, so two of the units being ~90% prepared when landing should be OK. The fleet carriers now near Yap are moving NE, and will make a pass at shipping around the Bonins before covering the Agrihan invasion. They will also be in position to support the carrier/battleship forces covering the Marcus invasion should that be needed.

There is a sighting of an IJN TF with 2x CA and 2x APD at Roxas in the central Philippines.

Here are the day's air losses from Tracker, which shows 5 or 6 fewer Franks lost compared to in-game.

The defenders at Saipan are still making things costly for us. The 2nd USMC Div is pulling out now, and two of the USA divisions will pull out the following day so that all three can begin rebuilding and preparing for a future target. After the remaining forces have recovered sufficiently they will bombard to see what effect that has. Supply was a negative modifier for the Imperials today, but as recently as yesterday their flak was knocking our 2EB out of the air. If they are just now running out of supply that should change things. It does look as though we disabled half of their remaining combat squads today, so the worst might be over.

One or more units has been destroyed on Kwajalein, evidenced by the 4EB from Kusaie re-targeting to IJ forces stranded on Ontong Java.

Spitfires are still flying out of Kalao. It looks like another bombardment is coming in tonight. We have mine layers on the way that should be able to make their run the day after. But, there might be enemy presence then too, so we'll have to wait and see what develops tomorrow.

Here is a look at the Kalao area. The TF SE of Soerabaja includes at least one DD, while the TF near Bandjermasin includes at least one CL.

One bombardment group heading for Marcus has been slightly spotted. No matter, the landings take place tomorrow and all but one bombardment TF will strike overnight. One group centered around a CL is too far away and will be available for followup strikes if needed.

Our fleet carriers have been spotted ~200 nm WSW of Iwo Jima. There is a convoy already heading north and now midway between Chichi Jima and Torishima, but otherwise only what looks like a small surface combatant force (destroyers) at Haha Jima. The carriers will head for Agrihan.

The Agrihan invasion will land tomorrow also. There will be no supporting bombardments.

The troops that will remain at Saipan until it is secure will bombard tomorrow. Unless results are bad, it will be kept up for a few days to deplete Imperial supplies. Even at 15,000 ft they are damaging our 2EB, so they must have some supply remaining! The 43rd and 6th IDs are being pulled out tomorrow.

Yap is secure.

Kalao was not hit overnight and the mine layers made better time than expected. The base now has 200 defensive mines in place. The next field will be ordered placed one hex to the west to present an obstacle to the approach of any bombardment group.

While many replacement squads are still required, great progress is being made in rebuilding the units assigned to take Iwo Jima. At which time they will, of course, begin rebuilding all over again.

Here is an overview map. Notice the stream of ships approaching Marcus Island and the USN fast carriers WSW of Iwo Jima. The invasion forces just west of Agrihan are also visible.

Do I hear the sound of B-29s warming up? Two months and the Home Islands will start feeling fire in the sky. An avalanche rolls toward Japan. The Chinese gambit by Admiral Wa has tied up so many troops that the island hopping campaign has been remarkably easy after Truk was vanquished. Again, nicely done.

I know you hurt elements of the KB and friends earlier, but isn't the big 6 of the original KB still around. I can't remember now.

Marcus Island was both captured and secured. The base has moderate damage, a total of 122% damage out of 300%, so it will take a bit to repair before fortifications are established. The bases are already both size 1 out of 0, so expansion will only be ordered once fortifications are deemed large enough to protect whatever garrison is assigned. The fleet carriers are heading south to refuel near Guam. Then they will head to Babeldaob and prepare to escort an APD convoy carrying troops to occupy Talaud-eilanden. Quick in and quick out is the plan. The APD convoy has loaded on Australia's Pacific coast and will refuel at Beola.

Here is a look at a contact in the South China Sea that could be fleet carriers, or just a well escorted tanker convoy.

May Fuso turn turtle and join her many sisters in the deep. However, unless additional damage is done or some japanese sailor screws up the damage control detail, that BB will probably survive long enough to run the sub gauntlet around teh Home islands. Your subs are really starting to score a lot of victories. Nice to see an S Boat do the deed and survive to tell about it.

Our subs came up empty and one was badly damaged.

2,642 AV at Chungking. Our brave infantry eliminated an Imperial engineering unit that was trying to sneak its way back to their orcish brethren.

A little excitement in the Burma region, as 2 Betty bombers tried to raid shipping at Ramree Island. Perhaps they were testing defenses, but they had to report their findings by radio. Otherwise units continue rebuilding nicely.

The attack at Agrihan went less well than hoped. The next attack will benefit from more preparation and will be accompanied by naval bombardments. Disruption was not terrible but must be recovered before we go again.

This is what the base at Kalao was established for. While this is going on we will be able to get base forces into Namlea without heavy forces covering. Speaking of which, the Imperial Death Gliders tried their luck on a supply convoy unloading at Boela, where fighter cover was lacking. LRCAP has been specifically assigned for tomorrow and a 4EB raid ordered against Manado.

The bombardment attack at Saipan basically did nothing. Our aircraft are still being damaged, so supply is still present. Tomorrow they will get all naval bombardment groups in the area (meaning none for Tinian, but not the fast BBs) and a deliberate attack by the four ID and other units present.

The Wake invasion forces are loading along the coast of New Guinea and will take on supply at Truk on their way to Wake Island.

Here is the Intel screen.

I spoke too soon about Namlea being shielded by Kalao, but it is still substantially true. The IJN CL gaggle was not seen the day before bombardment, nor are they seen now on their way wherever it is they are off to. The surface group from Darwin is being home-ported at Namlea to cover the arrival of the base force in two days, and two squadrons of P-38 have been flown in and put on CAP.

The assault team at Agrihan attacks tomorrow. It looks as though another unit on Kwajalein has been eliminated. Fuso has just made the sunk ships list; I am not convinced. Saipan airfield will begin offensive operations tomorrow, against Agrihan, as a base force is being loaded now at Guam for residence on Saipan. The P-38 group will also sweep Iwo Jima.

Here is a look at Namlea. Minor damage, and the units present (all combat forces) are little disrupted.
