Steam version won't start (Win 8.1 64bit)

I've gone through all of the troubleshooting recommendations that I could find, installed (or tried to install) all of the dependencies that came in _CommonRedist, tried manually registering the dlls that came with DistantWorlds (unsuccessfully), run as administrator, tried all of the various compatibility settings, etc. No luck.

Any suggestions? I can't download the latest patch since Steam doesn't provide a serial number to register.

I'm running 64Bit Win 8.1 with 16GB of memory.

i also run windows 8.1 pro 64 bit with 16gb of ram, soon to be 32gb, it works fine for me

is an error with windows media player and .Net Framework, and not an issue of the game.

as neither program comes as standard with windows 8.1, they need installing as well and are in this link...

also you need IE to be on your pc, if you're using the N version of windows 8.1, this also isn't in it and will need to be installed if you use it or not and it's not an optional install, it's a game requirement.

I guess that I should have mentioned that I'm running 8.1 Pro and not standard.

WMP was my initial thought, but when I tried to install/reinstall WMP, it reports that WMP 12 is part of Windows 8.1 and can not be re-installed. If I try the Media Features Pack (WMP for "N"), it reports that it's not applicable to my version of Windows. If I try the web downloader, it reports that I'm running 64-bit Win 8.1 and can not install media player, but can download it for other systems.

I did install all of the .NET packages, tried the diag tools, etc.

Any suggestions?

D'oh. I missed the obvious solution.

I went into the Windows Features,
-turned off Media Features
-rebooted
-turned Media Features back on (which verified/reinstalled from the Windows 8.1 cab/msi)
-rebooted

Everything is now working fine. It just needed to reinstall/refresh
