Out of Megiddo -- Team Sunfish, 1973 (new beta for testing)

Post by Mgellis »

This is the first of what may be a series of scenarios based around a common concept--threats made by the USSR during the Yom Kippur War convince President Nixon to launch preemptive strikes against Soviet forces around the world. In this one, an attack group of three American submarines must eliminate a group of Soviet submarines deployed a few hundred miles off the American East Coast.

(The title refers to Megiddo, in Israel, a site associated with the Biblical Armageddon.)

As always, I am very interested in hearing what people think. Comments, suggestions, etc. are all welcome. Thanks!

It's almost like the A listed ship and planes have a real advantage. The Orions killed 2 subs and a whale, but the subs you control have a real tough time locating the Soviet subs much less getting a shot on them. If it were my scenario I'd be tempted to give the Orions to team sunfish. I didn't get the whole scenario completed just the first seven hours or so. I have been enjoying it though, I don't want to let anyone think that I haven't.

Have to agree with cdu801,

interesting scenario concept but its alot of sitting about as the human player, with not much to do. I understand that is the nature of ASW work but perhaps hand over some more assets to the human player to fiddle with whilst waiting for the contacts to get found. [:)]

Yes, it's a basic challenge of ASW missions; the pacing will often be rather slow.

As for the other assets...that was deliberate. I wanted to make it a pure submarine operations scenario for the player. You get the advantage of having other eyes and ears out there, but you cannot control them.

Nice scenario, i enjoy it. At one point in my game 2 Golfs(?) turned on their radar and gave away their position. I add a savegame if you wanna look at it, Build 536

Enjoying the challenge but have a question
Why would a boat in hostile waters use its radar (not RN policy Maybe Soviet?)

No it must be an unwanted bug, sometimes the AI does what the scenario designer doesn't want them to do. Subs usually don't do that, altough in Tom Clancy Red Storm Rising a Los Angeles used it to get a quick fix on ships before firing harpoons on them. This does sound interesting, but iam not sure how feasible it is, i figure they would fire ASROCs back at you, and if you are out of ASROC range they are possibly out of your radar range. But them iam not a ASW expert.

One of the submarines is at periscope depth...so it is probably an AI "choice" to switch on the radar under certain circumstances...not a good choice, of course. :)

Did you set patrol doctrine to no radar for the subs?

I double-checked and, as far as I can tell, yes...there is no point where the radar is supposed to come on. Probably just a glitch.

Maybe the ignore emcon when under attack doctrine is enabled? And maybe for some reason they thought they were being attacked? Just a wild guess without looking at the save

Any other observations, suggestions, etc.? Or is this ready to submit to the Community Scenario Pack? Thanks!
