Changing the color of enemy ships

Post by WCG »

Is there a mod - or some other simple way to change Distant Worlds: Universe - to turn enemy ships bright red? Or at least pirate ships? I'm always overlooking pirate ships when they're dark gray or blue, nearly indistinguishable from the background of my human civilization.

Some of the colors in Distant Worlds I can't see at all (anything printed in dark blue on black might as well be left out of the game entirely, since I can never read what it says, anyway), but it's the ships that are particularly annoying. I've got long-range scanners, but so many enemy ships are colored almost the same as the background.

If I could make all pirate ships bright red, that would help. I don't need to distinguish between different pirate factions, anyway, since they're all enemies. And this way I could see at a glance that I've got enemies moving in.

Are there any mods like this? I don't know anything about modding, myself, but maybe there's a simple way to change the game files?

Thanks!

Check out GEM tm.asp?m=3211317, i'm not sure if it is still working but it used to do something like this.

Thanks, Unforeseen. That looks good, but it was last updated in 2012, apparently. It's hard to imagine that it would work with a different game (Universe).

But if I back up the original folder, I can always give it a try. Thanks, again.

You can do it yourself:

Copy the folders:
Distant Worlds Universe\images\units\ships\family22 to family25
to your customization folder:
Distant Worlds Universe\Customization\[your theme]\images\units\ships\family22 to family25

Then fire up your favorite imaging program (I use GIMP...) and turn the ships into a bright red color. Its just 130 files...

First I wanted to advertize my own ship mod, but then I realized that my pirate ship were all grey or dark red, not quite the color you are looking for...

Thank-you, Sirian. That seems very clear.

OK, Euler. I'll give that a try first. Thanks!
