Couple hours in. I'm stuck

Close Combat: Gateway to Caen is the latest release in the critically-acclaimed Close Combat series and focuses on the largest, concentrated British offensive since the Normandy landings in an attempt to penetrate the German lines west of Caen and cross the Odon River to get the stalled advance moving again.

Couple hours in. I'm stuck

Post by Ztormi »

Been ages since I've played the last CC so I decided to give this one a go. In short: I like it.

The enemy army consists of couple of tigers and Flak 88s with infantry support. I only have Cromwells so I think this fight is pretty much impossible to beat. I went ahead to combat hoping to get atleast one Tiger out of action.

I'm just messing around with the cromwell in the top left corner, trying to figure out how to retreat from battle. As for the rest of the tanks, they are tracked, immobilized in the hedges. The enemy refuses to attack and just camps around those VPs he has captured.

Now I'm wondering how to get out of this situation. Please excuse my noobiness. I'm trying to figure out how to surrender or flee from the battle as the enemy is not willing to accept my truce. Can I somehow repair the tracks?

is this an operation/campaign or single battle?

if it's an op/campaign, maintain your supply connection on the map to your supply depots or fight/maneuver to achieve it. Do the best you can and wait out the battle if the German AI wont truce.

if it's a battle: Do the best you can and wait out the battle if the German AI wont truce.

also: suggest you set battle time to 15 or 20 minutes.

It's a campaign.

There's no battle timer at the moment, it was defaulted to off so I just left it like that. I think that's the mistake I did here.

But even with the battle timer, wouldn't it be frustrating to just wait out rather than leave if all my tanks are immobilized?

Thanks for the help nevertheless.

Hit F8 in battle and it will bring up your timer. I play with 15 minute battles against the AI, and it minimizes issues where you're stuck or in trouble and the AI won't take a truce.

Ouch, that sucks.

If the AI refuses to move and you don't have enough working tanks to throw at the enemy to force a morale collapse (if you have that on), I dont see other way than to hit ESC and quit the battle. Your game will revert to the save just before that battle.

Also, you might think about starting the campaign from the beginning with a 15 or 20 minute timer, saves you alot of trouble.

The AI should accept a truce if you're not in contact / shooting at each other and 5-10 minutes have passed with no VLs changing hands (time depends on game settings, but 10 minutes is the maximum).

Yeah, I ended up restarting the battle and just throwing all my tanks at the army.

On the side note, I'm really having a blast with this campaign. I didn't restart it yet cause I feel like I'm doing well after all.

This monster stack is steamrolling my armies left, right and center. All I can really do against the stack is to fight stalling war against it, desperately using PIATs on rooftops and stacking my tanks trying to reach overwhelming odds against single wandering tigers while bombing the tiger blobs with heavy artillery support. I can't even manouver too much on the battlefield because of the Flak guns. Perhaps I should try to pocket it in strategic map but I'm not sure what the exact effects of that would be. Any tips would be appreciated. In 4 battles against this stack I've destroyed maybe 2 tigers while losing more Cromwells than I can count with my fingers.

Thanks, that's good to know. Perhaps I don't have to restart the campaign at all then.

The M10 and Firefly can take out a Tiger depending on the angle of the shot. Use your tanks in tandem having at least one that has a gun that can knock out a Tiger(e.g. M10, Firefly). Come at the Tiger from different directions, avoiding contact until your tanks are in position. When ready, move both into firing position and hope for a kill. It's not a certain method for knocking out a Tiger, but it's better than going toe to toe with a single tank.

Tigers and Flak 8.8cm guns together can be a pain in the royal butt.

I usually use my Mortars to take the crew out of the Flak 8.8cm when I have spotted them but before that I am extra carefull where I move my tanks too.

As for dealing with Tigers a combined attack with 2 - 3 tanks is your best bet, first I observe the Tiger for it to make a move into an position I find it suitable for me to make a move I usually have a Mk V sherman to get it's attention which drops smoke when the tiger takes the bait then I move a M10 or Firefly that positioned to take a shot at its rear or sides to try to knock it out. You'll lose some tanks that's a certain my last encounter with 4 Tigers ended with me knocking out 2 Tigers at the cost of 1x M10 and 2x Shermans.

If you can knock out 2 tigers at the cost of only 3 tanks that is a great trade. The standard for the Western Allies was to lose up to 5 or so tanks to one Tiger or Panther. That is the lost ratio I hope to attain with all my German tanks when playing against the AI. I figure that as the Germans were always short on equipment then I have to maintain a good level of tanks after the battle or the Germans would ultimately be the loser no matter how much territory they might gain.

Thanks for all the help guys. The Tiger army overextended deeper into my territory and I managed to get a stack of tank destroyers to annihilate the army for good.

Sometimes it's best to surround an enemy battle group so if and when you do win a battle, they will be forced to disband.
