Crashing when choosing Ancient Galaxy

When I try and start a new game using the Ancient Galaxy game type my game crashes (Distant Worlds has stopped working dialog)

Distant Worlds: Universe (Steam Version 1.9.5.3)

Windows 8.1 64bit

Make sure you have the game patched. 1.9.5.3 is the latest, and it should be shown in the lower left of the start screen.

As I mentioned.. I am using the Steam version. It auto updates and is using the latest version 1.9.5.3

Well, it would not auto update if you turned that off I never hurts to mention version when reporting an error.

It suddenly dawned on my that I had the Extended Universe 1.0.1 + Das Chrome Blue mod installed. I got Steam do to a fresh install and now Ancient Galaxy is working again.

I am going to investigate further by trying to put the mod back on - if it is the cause I shall report it to the mod author.

P.S There were no crash reports in that folder. Even when viewing hidden files.

It seems that rather silent crashes often can be caused by mods. Why a mod should make the ancient universe freak out is a different mystery, though.
