What exactly does Resupply Ships do?

Another simple question from yours truly, but google "has no power here" when it comes to Distant Worlds. So what exactly is resupply ships for?

They are a portable gas mining ship, which enables them to refuel your fleet. Very useful.

What is the advantage of using one over just letting your ships refuel at the gas mining stations?

They can be moved to risky - fuel poor - areas where you might not want to risk building a permanent gas mining station or have the time to build one. They can then serve as the staging point for multiple fleet actions. When no longer needed they can then be packed up and moved to somewhere else.

Basically they are a heavily armed, mobile gas mining station.
