Looking for some ships stats

Post by traskott »

Hello!!

I want to add the Satsuma and Yokozuma classes ( from Furashita Fleet ) to my own mod, but I'm not sure what stats they should have.... I can put some 400 or 300 here or there but I would want some more "realistic" design. Could someone give me a hand ?

I'm looking the late war U-Boats too. If I'm right, they are more true SS than the other types, which move on surface and dive only to launch torpedoes. Is there any way to mod this ? What stats should be assigned to a XXI type or the Walter Type SSs ?

Thanks !! [&o]

I would put much more maneuverability since they are supposed to be more difficult to detect and with snorkel would rarely be found at surface.

There is not much you can play with except that.

You can't actually put 300 or 400 in there. Doesn't go that high...[:D]

The Satsuma is quite easy to do. You just switch the 46cm guns for 51cm ones. The rest is basically the same.

Plus some thousands of tons of steel I guess.

Thanks for the note about 300/400. :)

Well, I made both of them myself back in the day, so...

About the Satsuma, she'd probably be about 1000-1500 tons lighter than the Yamato. Remember she has only six gun tubes instead of nine, even though they're bigger. Also consider that her belt armour, even though it was MEANT to have been 46cm thick, Japanese industry couldn't manufacture that thickness of steel in one long piece. That meant less effective armour, which would downgrade protection.

From what I've read (and there's not a lot), she doesn't look like she'd have much better protection than the Yamato. Also less main battery firepower. Bigger shells, but fewer of them.

I looked at remaking my Satsuma a bit more realistically, and was reminded that it's actually only Durability that maxes out at 255. Armour goes much higher.

Any way, as you can see, my ship is basically a slightly enlarged Yamato with the 46cm guns replaced by 51cm. The oft-mentioned 10cm AA guns I've omitted from the design. Japan was BARELY capable of producing enough for the Taiho and the Akizuki class and her gun factories were crying under the strain.

Considering almost 40% of 10cm/65 Type 98 production was used for land based mountings, I think that statement is a little suspect. Moreso a matter of not having the hulls (or suitable ones anyway, I don't think the weapon fit the role of the Tachibana/Matsu) for it by the time production was actually ramped up.

Also, regarding your earlier statement about inability to produce VH plates over 16", I point you to the Yamato's turret faceplates which are also VH and almost twice that thickness.

And I point you to the fact that an armour belt is SLIGHTLY longer than a turret faceplate.

Either way, here's the Yokozuna. She's in a league of her own.

Note that all her AA battery has a little bit of armour protection. Consider it an attempt to protect AA gun crews from the concussion of a dozen 46cm tubes.

You do realise that belt armour is not a single plate, right? And that the depth of the belt is less than the width of the turret (and hence dimensions of the faceplate)?

I am not saying its easy, like anything on this scale it requires a fair bit of resources, but its certainly not out of reach. The wisdom of doing so is another matter entirely (thats a lot of steel that could be used elsewhere).

Well, once you start building battleships this big, "wisdom" ceases to be a factor...[:D]

That being said, I think the Japanese overestimated how big and powerful they could build their biggest ships and cannon. My version of the 51cm gun, for instance, isn't very impressive, compared to the 46cm on the Yamato. Big shell, yes, but not very accurate (the Japs had problems with accurate shooting all through the war) and not longer ranged, either.

I think there is a point where having bigger cannons is wrong, what armour can't be pierced by a 20' or 18' but not by a 16'? I prefer having more barrels and ammo 'a la Cleveland'. Lot of times we have see in the vanilla game some IJN BB sank at the Iron Botton by the Cleveland or some CLAA with good sights. The logical development whould be a BB with 16x11' or a BC with 20x8'. Truly superior firepower [:D].

See also Hiei. She was mission killed by US cruisers at Guadalcanal.

Yeah. Imagine a Yamato sank by a hail of fire of 8-9-12'' guns....

As an addendum to the Yokozuna stats, devices continue on another page. 13.2mm AAMG on the right side and Type 13 and 22 radar fit.
