No replacements arrive for this vehicle until 6/43, the same time as the Jackson and M18 go into production. Yet, the Americans get 3 or 4 of these TD units in mid 1942. Is this a mistake and should the replacements start in 6/42 rather than 6/43?

Well, now I am even more confused as full production started in 9/42 so how would the Americans have the units in the Pacific before then? And I would guess that many of the early production models were reserved for the Torch landings.

Even in North Africa it seems the "original" TD units were equipped with half-track mounted 75mm guns and that the M-10 first showed up in early 1943.

Assuming some sort of self-propelled AT gun showed up in 1942 it would seem that it had to be the same half-track mounted weapons.

I think there might be a typo in the database. I have a book on US tank destroyer units. The first TDs were the 75mm half tracks which were first deployed as ad hoc TDs in the Philippines. There was also a 57mm gun mounted on a Jeep, but that never saw combat, it was too marginal a solution. Most TD units used towed guns in the early going and there was a lot of official resistance to self propelled TDs, but they did begin replacing the towed guns and halftracks in 1943.

I recall the book did say when Pacific units began to upgrade to M-10s and M-18s, but I can't remember at the moment. I'll have to find the book and look it up.

Thanks Bill, it must be a small mistake. They are pretty useful units but really should not show up in mid 42. Not a game breaker. Funny nobody ever noticed it before. Got to be at least one Tank destroyer fan boy on the forum...

It could be that the Battalions arrived on the dates listed but as Towed Gun units and upgraded to M10 later.
