Is it actually interesting what I write? Anyone's reading?

I am, not just for the pictures but also the fact that withdrawals are off. This leaves the IO in play for much longer. I am playing a pbem (in September 42 now) as the Japanese with the same setting, and I had tremendous difficulty in securing the bay of Bengal due to the Jutland 15 inchers outgunning my Fuso/Ise/Kongos (lost a couple of BB duels) I've had to have the Nagatos and Yamato stationed in Singapore to deal with that threat, and the British/Dutch subs operating from Ceylon have on more then one occasion put a torpedo in that triplet - with 3 months yard time required on avg (Singapore's repair is too small for the Yamato which is an additional complication). Took me half a year to get to secure the Bengali coast. Ceylon I've tried to raid to get the damaged subs and search planes off the grid, but the flak there is so devastating, I've lost a lot of elite CV aircrews (my Pt. Blair Nells can only get there without fighter escort). It's an impregnable by air fortress, and if its supplied by lots of KVs then it's also very costly to submarine blockade. So unless KB is in the theater, and you own Ceylon and have good search arcs, you have a good chance of outflanking any seaborne move he might make (with LRCAP from Calcutta/Chittagong) and in case of damage to your surface assets you have nearby bases to temporarily retreat to and then try to night dash port to port out of a/c range. To control the Bay of Bengal I should have taken Ceylon where I could have had Betties and Nells with fighter escorts ranging far, but I decided divert a lot of my IDs to try to bomb Sydney to oblivion from Lord Howe Island and to try to intercept his line of supply from Pago Pago. Your opponent doesn't seem too aggressive so far but I would make sure Ceylon is secure if he looks like going coastal to Akyab and beyond.

Thanks! Thats very interesting! One of my west coast (switchable) IDs is actually already on its way to Capetown, and it would be used on Ceylon or in India, as situation would demand. If I would have time, one or two dutch regiments would also go to garrison service there. And the first of R-class veterans has just arrived.

As he did not yet shown much activity in the Solomons, I just started loading 1st australian division towards Rabaul. In case he takes Rabaul before, I will drop it at PM. One australian motor brigade is on its way to Lunga, together with NZ engineers and US BF. Another MotorBrigade is being airlifted to PM. Horn island is also well fortified, and lots of supply is on its way to PM, Horn, Lunga and Rabaul. I want a nasty surprise there. 2 P40B squadrons and 1 P36 squadron are moving to Suva, and would go to Rabaul/PM/Lunga there.

I'm in the midst of a nasty little battle in the Solomons against Arto right now. He moved slowly in this area, so I sent some US Army guys to Lunga with some engineers and artillery. He did the same thing to me here that he did at Port Blair, which is to land a division first...and when that stalled out, to land 2 or 3 more. They won't last long now.

What you should do is build forts first. Forget about the airfield - you don't have the planes to contest. I built forts to 4.6, and then got the airfield to level 1 because I was sick of getting bombed by unescorted Bettys. As soon as the airfield hit level 1, he began sweeping from Munda (which he has built to level 6) and pounding it with BBs on occasion. I'm going to end up having to withdraw my planes, and leaving the troops to die. However, it's going to take him several weeks to kill them behind level 4 forts, even with 5 times the troops. I've been able to keep the men in supply using about 50 subs on sub transport. I figure their torpedoes don't work anyway, I may as well use them for something useful...

A little advantage about building forts at dot bases: can the airfield/port at such places be bombed? If so, he didn't do it, which would have halted fort building. If not...then you can build forts unimpeded by airfield damage.

Okay, so that sounds nasty! Hmm, now its the question, to land in Rabaul or not to land.... Denying Rabaul could be important, but denying PM or Horn island is even more so...

Its 10th Jan.42, and looks like I smacked his CL. As I saw mKB moving out, I sent the batavia battle group (2 CA, 6CL, 2 DD) to bombard Palembang, hoping to catch a late transport or similar. He had a task force of 1 CA, 1 CL and 7 DDs in the way which reacted on me. In the night, there was a minor exchange of fire, with just a few hits. Just after sunrise however, allied TF surprised the japs in heavy rain, with radar contact being decisive. CA Kumano is on fire mainly hit by 6" guns, while CL Natori is on fire, heavy damage with a total of 12 8" hits. Singapore is close, but there were sinking sounds and there's one each of Alf, Dave and Jake floatplanes lost to ops. In my force, CLs Colombo and Caledon and DD Alden need minor repairs, rest is directly usable. Yet another hit on the japanese tentacle.

Image

My HBs from Soerabaya did not fly in the night, but the fires in Palembang seem to have damaged 50 more oil - recons tell me that now 208 oil and 160 refinery are gone. For good I hope.

He swept Batavia and Port Blair, trading around 20 Zeros and Oscars for same number of P40s, Buffaloes, Dutchies, and Lancers. I only lost 6 pilots however. Good training for my units as average experience of the units grew significantly. Port Blair Hurricane unit got from average exp. 48 to 62 in just 2 days, downing 8 Oscars for 2 losses. Those Hurries seem to be more or less a match at least to the Oscars at high altitude.

At Wake, he seems to be retreating. His transport group gone, and his Carriers moving out towards Kwajelein. I hope they are out of sorties now, and no second wave of troops visible. My carriers refueled from the oilers, and are moving to the north of Wake position. If KB would not be seen, I might take the risk and bombard his regiment's remains. Bombardment group with 3 BBs is also nearby...

Okay... hmm, need to look once more when I come back home today. Several Alfs were lost in air to air in last days, so it might be that her Alf was not anymore there..

Sink a CV and then check the plane losses screen!

Edit: it may make a difference whether the ship is sunk outright or scuttled. I don't know, haven't tested that.

I've seen them as both, but generally when it's a CV they're lost 'on the ground.' Some flying when the ship goes down that can't make a friendly ship or base might be ops, as might FP from a surface ship.

Interesting that I haven't seen surface ship FP go to another ship when their own goes down, but this happens a lot with CV planes, often mucking up the flight ops by overstacking the CV for the next day.

FPs try to go to the nearest base. Recently had a battle where 2 CAs sunk - I can confirm that FP losses onboard ships also count as ground losses.

It might be Ops losses if they're lost at sea in an air transport TF...unsure there.

Small update aggregated for 11/12 Jan 42

I gutted Palembang once more. I noticed that he had many fighters in Palembang, but also flew lots of sweeps out of it. So I took the risk and made a day raid with my HBs in Soerabaya. Lost 3 B17D, 1 LB30, and 1 B17E, but got LOTS of hits and heavy fires. Only 28 Zeros on Cap, with nearly 40 zeros and 50 oscars sweeping out of Palembang. I will recon it next turn, using the LR Buffalo recons and Beaufort recons saved from Singers. Now my pilots can stand down, until he will do such stuff once more
Morning Air attack on Palembang , at 48,91

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 40 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
B-17D Fortress: 3 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 9 damaged
LB-30 Liberator: 1 damaged

Manpower hits 24
Fires 33874

He took Wake, second wave of landing shocked and got it ;( Oh well, I'll survive.

I lost one big AMC bringing a CD batallion to Pago Pago, it had 4 DMs as escorts but was still torpedoed twice for no damage to the sub...

Otherwise, standard stuff going on. One more Hurricane IIb squad at Aden - rushing it to Port Blair now, but would take some. More Hurries, and ex-East Coast P39/P40/Mitchells/Wildcats/Cats/Dauntlesses/Vindicators are coming in next 10-15 days to Cape Town and Aden, so I hope to be able to rotate squads in and out of PB from Colombo/Calcutta. Trying to stock lots of supplies in Christmas Island and Port Blair. Port Blair 3 AA units are nearly completely unloaded and claimed 2 Sallies during a night raid already. 48 3.7" guns and 36 40mm Bofors can give low level raiders some fire...

He got bloodynosed at Clark Field. Deliberate Attack gone bad even if no forts remaining in my case...

13 January 42

Looks like either a raid or an invasion is coming towards Batavia, spearheaded by mKB. First strike of dutch bombers with lots of escort took bad losses, but then, 4 Swordfishes slipped in, and put 2 torps into Taiyo, for 1 AA loss. I set all (70) fighters to escort, and got 18 more Swordfishes, 16 Vildebeests, and 17 B139 for strikes.
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Billiton at 52,92

1 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 15000 , scrambling fighters to 12000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 29 minutes
Taiyo-1 with A5M4 Claude (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
1 plane(s) intercepting now.
5 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 1000 and 6000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 39 minutes

Else, a quiet turn. 2 Aircobra and 1 B26 squads came to CT, now 17 knot transports are rushing them to Colombo. 1 more hurricane squad came to aden, and first australian brigade of that big division came too, all now shifting to karachi.

He got really careless with Taiyo.
It's a pretty small CVE, so I think 2 torps should do it. Watch for ground losses in the Intel screens.

No Claudes/Kates reported this turn either...

Bad news - he is landing in Merak, on Java. My planes tried all, but only got one APD sunk and confirmed, and one large AP damaged, for a slaughter. Lost 11 Vildebeests, and 11 Swordfishes... Ordered to go on and continue to the last man. I now sent POW+2CAs+10 CLs + lots of destroyers to intercept, with Palisser in command, agression 81. I hope to catch MKB at night, its in range and moving in. Else, I saw 1 Kongo BC and a few CAs in cover. If it works, I can get some good ripe, if it fails, I loose my last balled naval asset save for 2 CLs under repair in Soerabaya. I will probably rail all useful units from Batavia to Soerabaya next turn, 100k supplies there, and lots of evacuation ships prepared.

Moving radar equipped units to PB and Cocos, more then division equivalent in each (406 and 312 AV). Forts building, also airstrip is accelerated in Cocos now, so I can fly over the guys from Java. AA guys from PB got 4 Sallies down in a night raid.

More squads arrived in Aden and Cape. Hurricanes IIa and IIb, Marauders, P-40.. shipping all of them to Colombo/Karachi for PB rotation and/or Assam. Some 10 further US squads are being shipped from EC to CT (DBs, 2E, F...).

NorPac is quite ready, most bases at forts level 2 or 3 already and 100+ AV, 4 patrolling PBY groups, one at each island. except for CD guns, new reinforcements would probably go towards SoPac now.

Lexington got 2 submarine torpedoes, and is moderately damaged, with 28-47(28)-11(11). Its just 10 hex off PH, and it would return to it. I will check how long it would take at PH yard, and maybe move her to West Coast. I placed all 3 other carriers Dauntlesses to ASW 100%, Devastators to search 100%, and floatplanes at night search 100%, sent 4 ASW teams to assist too.

First phase of Merak counter invasion. POW+cruisers group does not come in combat, being too slow. In exchange, POW got 3 air torps despite cap, and is damaged quite a bit. Will retire to Soerabaya, pump out if possible, and then go to Colombo/CT, if not sunk next turn. All other 24 ships in TF are not affected, and would press on to try catch carriers. Other TF, with all spare DDs, surprised japanese cover force with Kongo, CA, 2 CL and DDs, trading 2 old 4-stackers on a modern Asashio. Parrott is burning, but if extingushed, would probably survive, its 50/50 game. Paul Jones would need some yard work, all others are ok but need to reload.

DD Pope, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
DD Whipple
DD Stronghold, Shell hits 2
DD Tenedos

He sent in 6 Sallies to bomb Port Blair at low altitude at night, not a single one returned, all 6 AA! AA at Port Blair is now working very well! 6 Sallies and 2 Betties, plus more betties to ops (could be at Clark Field however too). Barisan Regiment ended shuttling to Cocos, now shuttling 4th dutch regiment and several dutch HQs to it. Reunited indian division of 3 brigades, AT and Art regiments at cocos, 2 brigades were badly hurt ones. One of the hurt brigades upgraded to indian 42 squads, and during reunite, somehow all indian squads became 42 ones, but a few got disabled during that.

Lexington is moving to PH, 4 hexes out, and ALOT of jap subs are now seen, but lots of hits (9 or 10) were reported by other carriers aircraft and PH based ones. I ordered a sprint to PH to her TF, and sent all DC equipped vessels from PH on ASW mission.

I evac all boys from Batavia to Soerabaya. Shipping them to Cocos as the PP situation allows.
Most Sumatra survivors are now in Sabang, and being flown/shipped out to PB.
Heavies hit Miri for last time, half of the oil there is gone after 3 strikes.
Lex made it to PH, one jap sub reported sunk by several ASW attacks and air bombs... 123 days repair, so I just pump her out and move her to Alameda.

Not a bad result to possibly take out an IJN CA. You might do better splitting that massive TF into a few smaller ones. Not sure if it's day or night here but it's definitely not as good to have massive TFs at night. Around 6-8 ships seem to work best. You'll also get a chance to engage the Japanese several times and your last engagement might send fresh ships against a battle worn enemy. Usually that is to your benefit.

Also, anything over 15 ships doesn't work as well against subs and coordinating AA fire for sure, but I have a sense from experience that a lot would be left on the sidelines not able to get in position to engage in a battle like this one. You would have seen in the replay but might even be able to see it in the report.
