You should get the latest beta version. There were improvements made on lag time issues when supply was being worked on, although the last few fixes done may have added some back in.

I wasn't going to buy it just for Barbarossa and Guadalcanal. Not at all. But I gather they are the two scenarios (in that order) you are suggested to dive into in order to "break you in". I was just wondering if anyone had finished either of them.
I have; that is successfully completed them both. I even posted an AAR on my Guadalcanal scenario. With respect to Barbarossa, I've played that scenario 4 or 5 times, finally got an axis victory on my last play and decided to move onto the Global War scenario.

I'm a beginner with ZERO WiF experience before I bought MWiF. For me, playing through these two beginning scenarios taught me a lot about the tactical aspects of the game before moving onto the larger encompassing scenarios and the strategic production part of MWiF (WiF).
Can I ask - what did you use to learn the mechanics? The video tutorials? The reading the manual through (or just for reference)? Reading other peoples AARs? All the above?

What was the greatest help?

It depends on your preferences. I began to play long time ago but I remember that we learnt playing and consulting the rules phase by phase. In my opinion videos are ok to learn about program not about game. For strategies AARs and comments of other players are very usefull.
Sorry, for my bad english! "Wiffing" since 1990 to the tomb!

I watched and went through all the tutorials first, read the manual (still finishing Vol. 2), played the Barbarossa Scenario followed by Guadalcanal, and now I am playing my first Global War scenario while referencing the RAC when I need to (which is a lot).

I have played a million wargames and this is by far the most complicated. I'm also a lawyer and I'm finding that there are less rules in Illinois Civil Procedure than there are in MWIF.

thanks for the suggestion. I'm struggling to download though as it expects me to login to the FTP server. Are there some instructions somewhere as to how to get the latest Beta or am I being thick?

First try the update from the Splash screen once you've launched the game.

If that doesn't work use the Members Club link from Post 1 of the availability announcement thread.

You need to first register the game.

This game is based on a counters, mapsheet and dice game that dates it's lineage back to the 1980s. So, if you are used to viewing how many Panzerkampfwagen IVs make up your Panzer Divisions, or how many tons of supplies your 5th Corps is eating up per week, you won't be seeing that here. However, for a board game of it's type there is a lot of detail.

Clever, but I detect an anachronism. Long ago and far away, there were only D6s. (It was before D&D and nobody knew how to make a die with more than 6 sides...)

ah.. that map was the best for your eyes. Lot's of boring white, but somehow that helped.

Totally different philosophy of game. No investigation, No "real time", but turns. You don't give orders and they execute them later...

... and much, much more complicated.

I have both HoI3 (with all the expansions) and WiF. I never played the board game so to me I treated this as just another computer game [:)]. I like both games. HoI3 can be a lot simpler since you can just give Theater/Army Groups orders and let the AI run the battles. Plus you can automate production, research, etc.

In WiF you have to do it all yourself. Want Oil/Resources from the DEI or Middle East? Setup the convoys yourself. Convoys getting sunk by subs? Create a TF and sent to the Sea Area to escort/patrol. Maybe it will help, maybe not. At the end of turn do you leave them is the Sea Area or return to base? Accepting that by staying your TF will be in a lower Sea Box to represent that the TF is not as effective as when it first sailed out. Or if you return to base and leave the area unprotected, with the chance the other side could go first next turn and have free shots at your convoys?

This is just one small part of the decisions you need to made for every turn about pretty much everything. So WiF is much more of a 'thinking' game (since board games do not have automation built in [:D]) while HoI 3 does. So it depends, if you want to manage everything, then WiF, if you want to pick and chose what you want the AI to do versus you, then HoI 3 would be better. Of course I did it the easy way and got both [:D] And I will get HoI 4 whenever it comes out too [:)] What can I say I'm an addict for these kinds of games [X(]

As an inveterate computer-wargame micromanager I actually find WiF a bit easier to deal with in some respects than HoI. The amount of pause-unpause I would get up to...

(I would say playing WiF solo is slightly more complicated than playing HoI solo because you're only running one country in HoI vs. all major powers in WiF.)

Incidentally, I ran through a few impulses of the 1944 scenario (posted a currently-defunct AAR) and will probably get back into it if I get MWiF for my birthday (it's going on my list). For what it's worth I did not encounter any serious bugs with the sequence of play (some unrelated bugs occasionally caused crashes), although I had not got to oil use or production by that time.
