Best WWI game from Matrix?

Post by Rexor »

Hello all,

I'm fascinated by the period, but which one is best--this one, Guns of August, or World War I Gold? I'm looking for the greatest immersion and depth, I guess. Also, as good an AI as possible. Any thoughts?

Cheers in advance!

Number of possibilities...Commander The Great War, WW1 Gold, Guns of August, and AGEOD has a new WW1 game coming out in late August. I have Commander The Great War and WW1 Gold. I like them both. Commander is easier and more stable. WW1 Gold is more complex and freezes on occasion. They are both good games...I would suggest checking out the websites to see screenshots and Google reviews to get a better idea...
...and I would seriously consider AGEOD's To End All Wars that is coming out. Personally I love their games...

Yes, I love AGEOD's games as well. I think their American Civil War is one of the finest strategy titles ever made, though I gave Pride of Nations a pass (lots of mixed impressions from players). I even play Birth of Nations once in a while.

Thanks!

I have played all three and they all offer a different experience. Guns of August is a very solid game, just a little dated for me now. World War 1 Gold is the deepest of the three and had great potential which was never fully realized IMO. Minor stability issues, but offer more in the way of politics than the other two. Commander the Great War is easy to learn, hard to master and though there is really no diplomacy to speak of, the AI is solid and it offers the best battlefield experience IMO and has given me more hours of enjoyable game play than the other two combined.

So I would give CTGW the nod. Again, comes down to personal preference.

WWI Centennial Edition is a re-release of WWI Gold and available on Steam. While it has had a few glitches on release (mostly relating to installation on Steam) it's built around a new game engine that greatly improves performance. WWI Gold was virtually unplayable because the game ran so sluggishly, but WWI CE solves all that. The game finally is playable.

Of the various WWI games, I prefer WWI Gold (now CE) simply because it's a completely unique game. It's based on a board game, has a unique rule set and great atmosphere. The other major WWI games (including Battlefront's Strategic Command and AGEOD's upcoming End All Wars) are all based on more general game engines, and I always come away with the feeling that I'm just playing the WWI version of a game I've already played before. Not to say they are bad games - they're not - but WWI Gold/CE offers the freshest approach, by far.
