Hope you are able to recover from this. Joking aside from the WITP AE thread, I hope you are able to resume this or another AAR soon because they are good.

I don't know why your saved games would disappear.

There is a bug in the latest beta. If you save games using the "Save Game" command, it sometime (often) saves the game without a .GAM extension, on some machines. (So far only two people have reported the problem, so it seems that it doesn't happen to all machines.) If this is happening to anyone, you will have your saved game, just in a file that MWiF will not read. Manually (using Windows Explorer) go to the World in Flames/Scenarios/[Scenario Name]/Saved Games and change the untyped file with your saved game in it to a .GAM file. If you are paranoid (and dealing with computers one should be), rename your original saved game first. The "Save Game As" command seems to always work; at least I have not yet had a problem with it.

However, this does not seem to be what hit warspite. Warspite, have you tried going to your \:C directory and doing a search for the name of one your saved games? That might turn up something. If all else fails, check your recycle bin.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

I should not try and do an AAR when tired.... [&:]

I flew two German bombers to Amsterdam for Ground Striking purposes - in the Strategic Bombardment phase..... Yep, I really did that [8|].

I thought I would quickly get out of the game without saving and go back to the most appropriate autosave. I got a message to say that the game could not save at that juncture. However, because I did not need it to save I proceeded anyway. When doing so it wiped ALL my Global War saved games and ALL autosaves too!!!

Fortunately I am early enough into the game not to be beaten by this and am re-constructing the game as best I can from scratch. I will begin posting again once I get back to Nov/Dec 1939 and the attack on the Netherlands. There may be one or two differences - unit picks and US Entry, but nothing too problematic.

pretty much the same experience you have with the cardboard and you discover a new rule you overlooked and the reaction is "Well, we're still in 1939, we can fix it"

Could you tell us exactly what you did to get all your saves eliminated, so that we don't do it ourselves?

Thank you.

I exited the game when I was warned that the game could not be saved in that phase (I do not recall the exact message). The warning message made it sound like the game would simply not be saved as opposed to the nuclear option it appeared to be [;)]

I have had a bit of a nightmare trying to re-create this game in order to pick up where the other game went wrong. The choice I have is (1) to start again from scratch, (2) start again trying to re-create the existing game, or (3) accept that its not a perfect match to what has gone before and just carry on warts and all. Frankly 1 and 2 are beyond my current patience level and so I am going with option 3.

We are at Impulse 6 of the Nov/Dec turn once more. However the Germans have not been able to declare war on the Dutch this impulse as their units are all out of position (don't ask....). In another display of staggering incompetence I managed to land Yammamoto in Central China rather than the south.....

On the plus side, the Poles have been conquered, Italy is still neutral, the reinforcements were in line with those previously announced and the Soviets have taken Eastern Poland and the Baltics. So at least some of the previous game still applies [:D]

In Central China the Japanese are looking to build upon their previous success by trying to envelope Changsha-Hengyang from the north and west.

I think it was a good call on selecting option three.

I was just about to post that I was eager to see the situation in China but Mr Perfect was already ahead of me with an update on the Chinese situation. [:)]

The Japanese try and get the attack up to 5:1 by flying in all their bomber aircraft. Although outnumbered, the Chinese have no choice but to fly too. They only need to take out one bomber for the increase in odds to fail.

Do you not play with fractional odds this time? Because if that option is in play then the increase in odds might still occur even if a bomber is turned back.

Air to Air Combat Round 1

The Allies roll a 9. - Yuk, its an AC. The Chinese send the weakest bomber (Nell) through.

The Axis also roll a 9 - No Effect.

Both sides stick around.

Round 2

The Allies roll a 15 - looks good!...but its actually only a DA. In combat terms that is good as the Japanese have to abort either their sole fighter or a bomber. They take a risk and abort the fighter.

And they were right to take that risk!! They roll a 16 in response - a DX. The Chinese fighter spirals into oblivion (the pilot is saved).

The combat odds are increased to 5:1 (no modifiers).

The Chinese naturally choose the assault table. Its a.....

....6! The Chinese lose two more units.

Things are suddenly looking grim in China. General Stillwell makes a panicky call to FDR:

Stillwell: Mr President! Mr President! we got ourselves a crisis!
FDR: Don't Scream Down (the phone) at Me. Crisis what crisis?
Stillwell: A China Crisis. The Japanese Army has broken through northwest of Changsha. How they did that is both a Tragedy and a Mystery in equal measure. The quality of the Jap army was clearly their Best Kept Secret.
FDR: How bad is it?
Stillwell: It's the Ultimate Crisis and if you think we can restore order then its just Wishful Thinking.
FDR: If I wasn't a Christian I would say Of F^&*!!
Stillwell: I wouldn't blame you sir, unless a miracle happens Mr President we are in trouble; Chiang Kai-Chek was really confident but their army has gone from the Highest High to disaster in just two turns.
FDR: Well, Vinegar Joe, I'm a very busy person, I can't sit here slotting China Crisis singles and album titles into a conversation with you all day.
Stillwell: Understood sir - oh and by the way I won - Crisis What Crisis was a Supertramp Album
FDR: Oh F^&*!!

And here is Christian. What a great tune [&o] - but very sad at the same time - leaves me feeling somewhat melancholy.....

The turn moves on with a weather throw of 9 - yuk! Lot's of snow, blizzard and storm.... sounds like an English summer in Cornwall [:D]

The Allies Would like to pass with all but the Chinese situation makes that unwise. They therefore choose a land with the Chinese and pass with everyone else - that gives a 20% chance of the turn ending.

Mmmm... may have a problem. Why are the Chinese units north of the lake in supply? They were not when the Japanese moved last turn. Has the lake Frozen?

EDIT: Ah good - not a problem, 8.2.9 "Lake hexes are frozen in snow or blizzard".

Nice weather for China. And now they can withdraw across the lake and save the two cutoff units. I hope they know how lucky they are. [:)]

Impulse: End of Turn

And the Allied gamble paid off! A throw of 1 ends the turn. Just to compound the Axis woe a Chinese Communist partisan arrives in Tsinan. By way of recompense the Germans get a Partisan for French Indo-China.
