Buying back destroyed unrestricted ground units

Post by seille »

@MichaelM

Playing the X8 Beta and scenario 2 in a PBEM i have the following problem.
When i buy back destroyed ground units which were unrestricted before destruction they respawn in Tokyo and
come back under restricted command General Defense[R]
Not totally sure, but i thought this was fixed. It is not fair to be forced to buy them out again and pay the PPs twice. They should respawn under their last command
or at least under a free HQ.
Maybe you can look at.

Mine do the same thing, but I was under the impression this was WAD. Once the unit does reappear, however, you can buy it out for a very minimal PP cost - usually 1 point to transfer it to any command. Just check Tracker or the bottom of the Ops Report daily.

1 PP would be ok with me. In my game it varies depending on the strength the unit arrives.
But imho it would be the best not to be forced to pay anything for these units.

Sometimes the cost is more, depending on the strength at the time of appearance. And yes, the unit should come back under the same HQ it was under when destroyed. Its been like this for as long as I can remember....[&:]...GP

Why should it? Destroyed units will normally be re-formed somewhere in blighty e.g. they depot base. For instance the 1st Manchester were captured at Singapore. They were reformed (from the 6th Bn) in 1942 back in England and landed on D-day, obviously no longer part of the 2nd Malay Bde. The 2nd Loyal Rgt also capture at Singas reformed in in 1942 and reassigned to the 20th Ind Bde in Italy.

I could go on but it emphasis the point that units would not normal be part of their original organisation, actually highly unlikely. Whether or not you should have to pay the full PPs for redeploying the units is a different thing altogether.

Well maybe some of these units should not be able to be purchased if they were rebuilt and used in other theaters....GP

After reforming both of these units saw active service late 1944 onwards so from approx. that date, then yes, they should be withdrawn. My argument is not about the specific units it's about the buying back of units destroyed. They would have been scratched from their original organisation, with other available (if any) units taking there place. If the units were indeed reformed then they would enter at they depots and enter the strategic reserve until reassigned as the need arouse.

Almost all British units come back under Southeast Asia, which is an unrestricted command, regardless of what command they were under when destroyed.

Almost all US units come back under the restricted West Coast command and have to be paid for to be released.

It seems that the game assigns them to the command of the region where they return, which makes sense.

For some this is a restricted command for others it is not.

As some one pointed out, as long as you remember to pay the extra cost to release them before you allow them to take replacements, this cost is minimal.

I don't know, but I suspect the answer to this lies in the code realities and not history. In the case being argued for two memory locations or DB records would need to be maintained for all yellow-restricted LCUs. Their original, "home" HQ structure and the PP-paid-for one they had when they died. More complexity for really no additional gameplay utility. A 1-PP cost to move a re-bought LCU is not any penalty to worry about.

I don't disagree to anything here, I think this is how it should work.
