Vetkin vs. Red, Ger v. Sov 1943

Post by Vetkin »

It's late in the year and the German summer offensive is once again slowing down; what with troubles in Stalingrad and the beginnings of the Soviet winter...

Kampfgruppe Vetkin is a mechanized infantry division tasked to clear the way for a major winter offensive up north. Reports cannot clearly indicate what Soviet opposition lies ahead...

Here we go:

Medium Map (winter, random)
10% artillery
C&C off
Rarity ON
Airdrops, gliders, etc. OK
Visibility 14

The file will be sent in about 10 mins. :D let's get it on! :)

The battle has begun!

Recon groups move forward and secure all Vhes in conjunction with fallschmirjagers. MG42s dropped to the rear of Soviet lines have found that they have dropped into the hornet's nest... first losses belong to me... grrrr

120mm artillery drops all over the Soviet line but I don't know if any hits are scored.

Up North, 2 T-34s are spotted by motorcycle troopers, one cycle gets blown away for being too nosy. So... tanks are blitzing up front eh?

My recon group will have their work cut out for them. Iron crosses for everyone who survives the initial onslaught of the horde.

Along the front line Soviets move in closer to check out the license plates of German BMW cycles, pushing German recon back to their forward formations. There's a brief firefight among German and Russian armor but no losses yet.

Sporadic gunfire erupts all across the battlefield, considerably thicker in the village to the north where a few infantry supported T-34s are attacked and destroyed or immobilized. Many other Soviet armor can be seen including deadly but fragile M10s loaned from the Americans. I think a few bike squads are also pushed back or destroyed. The action is getting hotter as the bulk of each side's forces arrive at the front.

To the south several tanks are spotted. A hidden soviet HMG rattles an engineer squad which promptly leaves their half-track.

The battle is going as planned so far except for how I underestimated the number of Soviet armor...

Russian outflank Germans up north exchanging a few T-34s for 2 Panthers and a Tiger (plus flamer, HTs etc.). They get very up close and personal with German AFVs shooting them at point blank. The south is quiet, Russian colonel is letting Germans roam there.

Not a gut round for the Germans, a T-34 is torched by a flame panzer. A few Soviet MC squads being forced back by casualties.

A Tiger confronted and surrounded by T-34s chooses valor over prudence and gets destroyed by a shot to the side. Another Tiger is in a precarious position as it too decides to make a stand against the Russian horde.

An M10 survives an 88mm round...

I'm being flanked in the north by more than half a dozen T-34s...

The middle is still pretty much secure, I'm rooting out partisans although I see armor coming closer, a few HTs of mine are destroyed.

Quiet down south...

Soviet blitz continues as Tigers find themselves surrounded by T34s coming from all the directions, several T34s lost in exchange for a couple of Tigers. German 88mm ATG overlooking the north was deadly taking out at least one T34 this turn so it was suppressed and a partisan squad finished it off from behind. As it wasn't enough, the Soviet center went on a rampage in the middle. There Germans concentrated a couple of Panthers, engineers and HTs on the same hexes so Russian commander used his favorite trick and rammed them with scout car and T34s forcing Germans to shoot at each other. T34s were followed by M10s to finish off the Panthers. In the south, T34s echanged fire with a Panther with several hits but no score but they did manage to take out 3 HTs from a far since they couldn't close in due to Tigers overlooking the southern flank from the hill which just happened to be the fast arty spot for the Russian Katyusha to slam it with all it got torching one Tiger.

No trades this turn.

Encircled Tigers in the North fight a valiant hit & run effort against the countless T-34s, wolverines and various TDs. A T-34 is destroyed. The Tigers retreat safely through smoke, one suffering several jarring hits that kills the loader (-1 MG) Farther back on the hill where my 88mm formerly was, A Tiger goes 1 on 1 against a T-34 which has terrain advantage (its higher...) Shots were exchanged, I hear a penetrating hit, but don't know if the T-34 is damaged significantly. The Russians make up for this by pounding 76mm artillery shells on the bewildered Tiger

In the burning and ruined town where a lot of action occurs... Infantry reforms supported by MCs and AA guns (Whatevers left, including several crewmen which form their own platoon.) A T-34 and a Tank destroyer is destroyed by AT mines and 30mm flak.

To the south, a platoon strength of T-34s are spotted approaching the lines, maybe more, not sure...

Tigers continue to suffer in the north from an onslaught by Soviet armor. Soviet armor advance in the south is stopped by a lone Tiger killing two T-34s so Soviets are waiting to soften up its position.

Another T-34 taken out in the town to the North, this time by flame panzer. The town really turning into an insane meat grinder for both sides. Men for me and armor for the Soviets.

Not much action this turn, a lot of troops movements and probing attacks. A few HTs of mine are destroyed while bravely scouting the perimeter of the battlefield. The german kampfgruppe is now consolidating and moving to Phase 2. With luck, the Soviets will never know what's coming.

memory lapse

Post by red »

Since I sent it back on 4/9 and didn't write a DAR entry immediately, my memory escapes me. From what I remember, after long hypnosis sessions: Soviets cautiously advance forward, scouts report a German defensive line setup consisting of 2-3 Tigers and 88 ATG. Soviets setup a smoke screen to get closer to the Germans and sent MCs to suppress ATG which those did quite well with Tigers silently watching their ATG being shot up. A couple of T-34s were sent into the village in the center discovering several engineer squads and a flamer. In the south T34 surround lonely Panther but fail to destroy it.

I think you sent me the wrong turn, but pretty much the same happened, I blow up one T-34 in the village north of the middle VHes and my Tigers form that defensive line you're talking about :D

I think I also scattered some of your crewmen.

good, bad and ugly

Post by red »

This turn brings mixed emotions for Russian commander. Soviet armor and infantry exploit the northern success by advancing towards the German rear. On their way they eliminate several fleeing HTs and 88 ATG setting a smoke screen in front of a couple of Tigers maneuvering to head off the Russian advance. Partisans sitting silently in the German rear spring into action and shoot up several AA trucks clearing the way for the Soviet air strikes. By combined effort of armor and infantry braving flamethrowers and satchel charges the village or whatever remained of it has been liberated and the Soviets are poised to seize the central vhexes. In the south Russian armored group engages the Germans to prevent them from reinforcing the rear and center, this cost Soviet commander a couple of T-34s and a Katuysha truck with several more AFVs exposed but that should keep the Germans busy for awhile.

The village may have been liberated but it looks like a small Stalingrad... Every building is ablaze or is cratered by the intense fighting... a parachute squad tries to hold the VHes, digging in for a last stand.

The northern defenses are still holding, a hit and run attack by a Tiger on a T-34 results in yet another 88mm shell bouncing off its well designed hull.

To the rear, 120mm crews turn their cannon around and lay waste to a sneaky partisan squad. A rocket half-track also salvoes its rockets into another partisan squad escorting a T-34. the squad disperses... The T-34 is unhurt, even when another 120mm cannon turns and fires at it (2 hits) but no penetration

Southern forces are faring much better. A platoon of T-34s are destroyed by engineers and a Tiger. A Katyusha is also gunned down by mg34s. Recon units indicate few resistance left in the south... Might still have enough time to protect flanks.

Soviets continue to push towards German rear vhexes destroying a couple of Rocket HTs. Same partisans who destroyed AA trucks last turn, attack German 88 ATG suppressing it well. In the center there are 2 Tigers present, Russians try to mount a flanking attack against them but after losing 2+ AFVs, decide to do better preparations. In the south Germans advance surviving Tiger and HTs across unprotected Soviet southern flank after destroying Soviet southern armor group in its unsuccessful attempt to rush them.

The phalanx-like defense of the Germans continue as a Tiger approaches and promptly blows out of the air an M10. A flak wagen gets revenge by blowing up an AAMG truck. Everybody is doing their part, including the arrogant HQ who, along with a few crewmen, charged a partisan squad, scattering them to the wind.

To the south 2 MG emplacements destroyed, a few crewmen scattered.

In the village, parachute troops losing 1/2 their squad strength continue to fight, killing at least 4 MC troopers.

To the north a 120mm mortar crew force back a partisan squad by leaving the tube be and pounding individual shells and throwing them by hand :D
