BTW, you look very much like my younger brother in this picture! [:D] He and I look nothing alike.
Ugh. You've caught me in a logical trap here, USS Mike. I cannot say that Dixie is a handsome visage (since he looks nothing like you) without complementing him. Vice-versa too. What's a muckraker like me to do in such circumstances? [&:]

RE: THE THREAD!!!
Sad news about Robin Williams indeed. He never was one of my personal favorites, but his comic genius could not be disputed. [:(] What a loss.

Strange that someone who brought so much laughter and joy to so many was so unhappy. [:(]
What was the line about "living lives of quiet desperation"?[&:]
I hope that he finds the peace that he apparently didn't find in life". [:(]

I found it. Thoreau. “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” [:(]

Depression is a disease and if you have any thoughts like that, seek treatment! There is no shame in it. Just like cancer or a broken bone. Something isn't working right, get it fixed!ORIGINAL: AW1Steve

Sadly people don't. Because what is wrong is 'inside' and can't be seen by others they don't feel like they can seek help. Maybe they're too afraid of being branded weak or they're afraid of letting people down. I've known two people with depression, one was a friend from work who only really went for help when he realised (or was told) that he wasn't safe to be working around aeroplanes in his condition.
The other was my younger brother. He got as far as writing THAT note but I came home early and found it before he did anything. That has been the single scariest moment in my life. Whether he would have done something or if it was a cry for help I don't know. I don't want to either. No one should feel like it's the only way out, it isn't.

Great stuff, Martin!
Until the last of them have left us, I believe giving the WW!! vets a chance to reminisce is more important than preserving the history for younger folks.

The young need to know what has happened in order to make sure we don't relive it. All RAF aircrew volunteered, iirc it was the same for USAAF, knowing it was a dangerous task. The fact that they chose to do so means we can choose not to. As far as I'm concerned, if just one veteran takes something positive from the stuff we do then it's all worthwhile.
So many of them seemed to stand a little taller on Friday when they were able to show their family where they had sat during the war. Bomber Command have often got the s***** end of the stick post war. So seeing them (rightfully imo) proud of their part was wonderful.
