The Station 1943 Is Available for Download

Post by ChrisMaiorana »

Background: Just before midnight on Feb 17th, 1943 the 28th Maori Bn of the 2nd New Zealand Division crept along an elevated railway embankment into the center of Cassino town to seize the Train Station. Behind them engineers scrambled to bridge the flooded Rapido river before first light. If all went according to plan the 28th would seize their objectives and hold on until armor reinforcements arrived later the next day.

Hi Budd. You can place the signature files in the Graphics/Scenarios/Default. No problem. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Simon. Yes click the blue download button to grab the files. The estab files both go in the estab folder, the scenario file goes in the my scenarios sub folder of the scenario folder and the map files in the map folder. Let me know if you need anything else.

Many thanks for this, Chris. I think it's a great little scenario. The map is lovely, again. I've played through once and got a draw. As below, at end. It's tough, sure, but I'm sure I can do better. Once again, the scale is very manageable and interesting, I think. Thanks for the work put in. Fantastic.

Don't wish to seem ungrateful, but how are the African scenarios coming along? [:)]

Hi Phoenix. Thanks for the comments. It is tough. I was looking at your end screen here and wondering what it would be like for the Maoris if they concentrated on taking the Hummocks first. Historically, I think they went for it second and found out it was well defended with barbed wire around it but I didn't simulate the wire or any fortifications on the Hummocks in this scenario. Might make it possible to actually grab it and then you are over looking the Train Station and don't have to fight through Cassino town to get there.

El Guettar is next and it will be soon. Possibly later this week!

CapHillrat, Thanks for your reply. How do I tell which are the map files? Where do the jpg, cop, coe, cos, and cache files go? Sorry for the bother.

Open up your Matrix Games folder, Simon, and find BFTB. If you look in the estab folder you'll see the suffix of estab files. Look in the map folder to see the suffix of map files. Look in the scenarios folder to see what suffix scenario files have.

I've just done that (taken a look, to check, because my memory is terrible...). The scenario files are .cos files, so put the .cos file in there. The map folder is full of .cop and cop.cache files, so put those in there. The estab folder has .coe and xml files, so put the .coe file in there. I never bother with the sig files (JPG or BMP or whatever), so have no idea where they go (you only need them if you want the signature on the AAR at the end to be historically accurate - makes no diff to game play).

That should do it.

Second attempt. Getting better. Followed your suggestion, Chris and tasked 2 platoons with a direct co-ordinated assault on The Hummocks, with arty support. They took it but weren't able to hold it. However, I think that and the activity at the other VPs drew enough defenders away from the Station objective (itself the scene of a fierce battle) to allow me to hold it at close, picking up the 25 points that probs made the diff. More by luck than design, I feel . To do better I would need to concentrate 4 platoons on The hummocks, I think. Forget the road junction.

I think smaller objective circles will make Decisive Victories possible for the allies, though no fun then. I love this scale. It's possible to keep track of everything easily. You can see instantly, for example, when a unit is disbanded and merged with another because the numbers involved are so few.

Just downloaded this and starting to take a look - initial observation shouldn't it be 17 Feb '44 not '43. The mainland of Italy wasn't invaded by the Allies until 3 September 1943.

Hi Tim. Good catch. I've got 1943 on the brain I guess. Fixed and updated the dropbox file.
