How to update DW:U on Steam?

Apparently DW:U doesn't automatically update within Steam. I launch the game from within Steam, click on "Play Distant Worlds" and, once it loads, there is a notification in the lower left corner that the 1.9.5.7 update is available. I go the Matrix site, download the update an try to launch it, but there is no clear way to update the game since is running within Steam. How exactly does patching work for the Steam version of this game?

It does update automatically when you launch Steam with an active internet connection. This typically happens in the background, unless you are watching your Downloads within Steam. You might try rebooting your system, re-launching Steam and seeing if it updates. When you are in the game on the main screen, what version number does it report in the lower left? If it says 1.9.5.7 there, then you area already up to date.
