Meta-Campaigns?

Post by hellfish6 »

Hi guys

So one of my favorite wargaming experiences was back in the early 2000s, when a group of gamers ran a meta-campaign for Combat Mission. It was a huge, interesting and occasionally painful process involving detailed rules and an enormous amount of work for all sides involved.

With the experience of backsight and forethought, and the capabilities of the CMNAO game, there's a small part of me that wants to attempt something like this, which I expect will become more interesting if/when the game allows for multiple players in one game. I think CMNAO could handle the air and naval aspects of the campaign well, and maybe we could use another game (SPMBT? Combat Mission Strike Force? Other?) to resolve land combat. I'd like to keep it pretty small and limited in scope - say, an expedition or strategic raid to secure WMDs/HVIs/destroy a terrorist sanctuary - with limited forces, of limited duration, and still interesting.

So, for now, this is an attempt to gauge interest. If this project does interest you, what kind of campaign would you like to see? A modern/near-future real world peer-on-peer fight (NATO invades Crimea or Russia vs. China)? A fictional modern/near-future peer-on-peer fight (i.e. Country A fights Country B)? Refight a Cold War expeditionary fight (i.e. Suez 1956, Kuwait 1961, Cuba 1962)? A real world third world vs. other third world fight (Nicaragua vs Honduras in the 80s, or South Africa vs Angola or India vs Pakistan)? Something else? US vs Red? France vs Red? Russia vs Blue? China vs Green?

Post suggestions, questions, tell me I'm insane, etc.

Sounds vaguely familiar, but I wasn't a part of it.

Count me in!!!!!

I'm more SPMBT (now almost dead) guy than CMANO guy, but i love both! I'd go for late cold war era or for near-future conflict.

This thing could be EPIC !!!

P.S: Fancy a SPMBT game ? Players are hard to come by ;-)

SPMBT is not dead! As long as insane people like us remain playing it [8D]
And yes, I´m looking forward in the future for a single player or multiplayer campaign CMANO.

Life is good..

I still play WinSPMBT as well, just not active in the community. And also a Combat Mission x1 and x2 fanatic, lmao.

When I go into the CMANO editor to make myself something to play, regardless of my intentions it almost always ends up being a mid-late eighties Cold War match up. I do try and mix it up some, Italy vs. USSR in the Med, UK vs. USSR in the gap, West Germany and the Netherlands trying to hold the line in the Baltic. The tech is just good enough to be deadly, but the countermeasures are effective on both sides so it's really interesting IMO. That's where my vote goes, hypothetical WWIII in the 80's.

You are insane. But I am still interested at this point.

I have a bias for near to mid future "what if" scenarios.

Depending on how this all sorts out count me as interested.

Count me in, near to mid future 'what if' scenarios sound particularly appealing, but any of the above suggestions spark my interest.

It was back in '04, and a lot of ideas about Command came out of it.

Wow... yeah, I was thinking a CVBG and a MEU kick in a door or something.

Very good idea !!!!
Combat mission shock force will be great for the land battles...

I hope that CMANO will have a multiplayer soon. It will be amazing!

So one I idea I had, when the time comes, is to let the Allied players role play a MEU/ARG (where we are between 1950-2025 is another matter, nevermind if we do the US/UK/France/NATO/Russia/etc.). So phase I will let the players task-organize their force for a MEU cruise. They'd need to remain flexible, and after they deploy, they'll receive Warning Orders prepping them for contingencies - one of which will actually become a no-kidding "land the Marines" mission with the associated air/naval battles to get to that point. This will require the observer/controller to prepare a few contingencies but if I'm in that role, I'm happy to do that.

Wait for the new CM x2 Modern Warfare from Battlefront. Although by that time they will have updated the original at least 7-8 times at $10.00 per upgrade its cheaper to buy the upgrade final package then do the patches route.
