Feature request: Intermittent sensors

Post by CassioM »

An interesting feature of the Harpoon series that not exists in CMANO.

The intermittent sensors, including the active/passive duration and percent variant.

I miss that feature on the airgroups, the ships and especially the convoys.

Hi CassioM,

I haven't played Harpoon. What is the benifit of intermittent sensors compared to active only sensors?
I'd assume if an unit actively emits, it is likey to reveal itself, regardless of constant or periodic emissions. ?

Without the why logic behind it, intermittent settings make no sense:)

Would it be practical (in the real world) to have several ground radars "blinking" at different times to get a air picture while denying the enemy a good clear fix?

Thats great but it doesn't really explain how should it be implemented.[:)]

There was no logic behind how harpoon did it. It was literally an time triggered on/off switch with some variation. That is great from the attacker side as it looks like something is going on and it complicates ARM shots but its not helpful to the defender at all unless it orchestrated in a manner which still provides coverage so things can happen (intercepts, SAM launches etc). I can't think of one scenario where anybody took the time to do that.

Anyways. This is definitely not a no but that we'd like implement this a little better.

Thanks

It would be more useful if attached to waypoints on movile units.

for example a group of ships can send 1-2 Pings when they reach each turning point of their plotted course.
maybe a couple of dropdows: activate [radar|sonar|both] for [1|5|10] [seconds|minutes]

or a couple of ASW helos, plot a couple of waypoins and make them use dippling sonar at each of them.

Hello guys

In the Harpoon series I use the intermittent sensors to fix enemy units, especially aircraft, without becoming an easy target for them to find. Sometimes, it serves to draw them too. Because they cannot fix my position, they are bound to get closer until falling into my trap.

It is especially useful when you have multiple units and not enough time to trigger each unit sensor manually. These blinking sensors may also be useful to confuse and take down some ECM defenses.

This sensor configuration is like a light switch that can be set for intermittent use. A few moments turned on, others turned off.

Many units can benefit from this feature. Airplanes, helicopters, mobile SAMs, escort ships chasing submarines with their sonar, among others.

The texts attached in Baloogan's post explained it very well.

Thanks

Hi,

Another scenario where this might be of use: An MPA trying to detect and locate enemy shipping without air superiority. E.g., Tu-95 Bear D in the Norwegian Sea. Radiation pattern would be something like 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Agree this should be tied to some situation to make good sense, not merely random. E.g., "One ping only!". [:D]

Thanks,

Can't you essentially do this with the current waypoint settings?
Turn a sensor on at a waypoint then have another waypoint very close after the first to turn them off again?
