I would even go as far as strip some (one or two) of the units in Siberia if that seems to give an edge. iirc there is a plane over there. Everything that can give you a chance to break the pact. Japan won't declare war in winter ; by the time that good weather comes, you can build new units right there in March, to replace these you moved.

Note that you'll need three impulses to do this for one unit! so better start as soon as possible.

That's not so easy as you think. Don't forget that after a rail move, a units gets disorganised and it can't be railmoved again that turn...

You were correct, yvesp, that a large part of the French main fleet is located outside of France. Several battleships are in Oran, Algeria. The main reason that the ships were placed there was to avoid a surprise port strike. As the game has developed I would have preferred to have them in Marseilles instead. But with that said I am very fond of Oran as the main French port during set up.

A 3-1 attack is one thing but when I placed the units I was expecting 4-1+1 or higher.
Why +1 ?
Because the Blitz Bonus optional rule is in play and that give a +1 to the die roll for each two attacking ARM, MECH and HQ-A units in a blitz attack against a clear or desert hex in fine weather. This option has some other modifiers as well but Germany would have had this bonus if the weather had been fine.

I had (and still mostly have) forgotten the 1d10 combat chart modifiers...
On the 2d10 chart, you don't get bonus when attacking a forest hex ; which in my opinion is much better.

Now I have it: shall we say 4-1 +1, blitz table ?
* you lose 1 unit 50% of the time, 2 units 20% of the time, nothing 30% of the time
on the average, that's slightly better than an automatic loss (you lose 0.9 unit)
* you have 20% chance of keeping the hex : you automaticlly lost it
* germany had 20% chance of losing 1 unit : you handed him assured victory
* german forces had a 40% chance of being disorganized, stopping the whole offensive for the turn ; what shall I say ?

If instead Germany chose the assault table at no bonus, it would have been:
* you lose 1 unit 50% of the time, 2 units 40% of the time, nothing 10% of the time.
on the average you'd lose more than you did, 1.3 unit.
* you have 40% chance of keeping the hex.
* germany had 30% chance of losing 1 unit, 10% of losing 2, for an average of 0.5 unit
* german forces had a 70% chance of being disorganized

Overall, in that case, blitz was better.

All this assumes clear weather, that is the worst for you: even in that case, a defending against 4-1+1 was better than what you did.

Now of course, in non clear weather, you'd have gained one impulse since the germans wouldn't have attacked at all...

When you attack, you should always assume the worst can happen ; but when you defend, you don't make it that way, otherwise you of course have lost the war (what if my opponent rolls only 10s !?) ; decisions like this must be carefully weighted by watching the table: 4-1 was not that bad: only in 20% of the time, assuming clear weather, was it worst!

We are, in part, talking by each other.

I agree with you that I could have placed Billotte better.

Were you saw a strong defensive line I saw the remnants of a line and German panzers in Paris by November. Going with the strong line might have been a better option but that would also have increased the risk of a breakthrough for Germany. And I saw that breakthrough as a real and present danger. I might have been to cautious and sacrificed the MOT for nothing. But in advance that was not as easy call as you want to make it. Several times I've seen a long first turn devastate the French so that Vichy was installed in Nov/Dec. On the other hand I've also seen them contained in Belgium. This time I thought it was closer to breaking through than not so I acted on that. Maybe I was in panic mode and overreacted. I do not know.

I still think that sacrificing a unit was the best option.

I understand what you say but I do not agree. Is it time to move on?

And last. Thank you for your comments. They are truly appreciated. [&o][:)]

Of course it is!
I just tried to understand your logic. I can understand your choice if you thought it was the only way to buy one more impulse to prevent the fall of France. And you're right: I saw a not so bad defense line. You are indeed in one of these situation where a good die roll could change the game in one way, and where a bad die roll might turn it in the other way. You tried a middle ground, that reduces the losses and the gains... There is nothing wrong with that: its a matter of taste.

The French 42nd Corps is transported from Syria to Marsielles and then railed to Billotte. USSR rails a garrison from Odessa to Brest-Litovsk.

No strategic bombing. No ground strikes.

France move one ART, one AT and one cav. Minor movement in China.

No land combats. No reorganization.

If the weather gets better, the Germans are going to be poking some holes in the lines.

Good news for the Allies is that the Germans look really short on reserves.

For the Germans that is a pretty dispiriting sight [:(] Rows of neatly stacked French and British. This is where luck is so important. A few 1's and 2's and the Germans are in trouble - whereas a couple of handily placed 9's and 10's (with of course the opposite applying to ground strikes) and the front gets blown apart!

Stressful!

I don't agree ; even with 9 or 10, Germany has too few troops to fully exploit such a success. The French will likely be able to reform the line a bit farther.

Now, the French have 1 or 2 ful turns to reinforce, and place a second ring behind the current line ; this should prevent any breakthrough. Meanwhile, I'm unsure that Germnay can send all reinforcements west if the Russians play their role.

Eh? I was talking in terms of results that a) cause maximum damage to the enemy and b) cause minimum damage and, importantly, no disorganisation to the attacker. If you don't want to roll 9's and 10's as the attacker, can I ask to play against you when netplay works please? [:D]

Oh, I agree then ; but tha's unlikely that such results will be lasting, while a bad roll might further stump the Germans. I believe that unless they get somme lucky shot somwhere, they are in trouble.

No declarations of war.

Germany selects another combined while Japan has a land impulse.

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

Germany moves Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, one TRS and one AMPH to the 3 box in The Baltic Sea.

No strategic bombing.

Germany ground strike the Gort hex with a 5 strength Stuka and manage to disorganize both targets.

Nice rolling. Now, are the Germans gusty enough (or foolish enough, take your pick) to follow up with an attack?

Well.

Now if you have balls, you attack. It is truly a chance. This still gives you a bonus over the rain (it's like you had only ground struck one unit in clear wetaher.)

Why: pray (very strong), and roll a 10 (or so) ; this destroys the HQ and removes all British units from the picture: they won't be able to enter France for a (too) long time. Unless the British bring back Wavell (they should.) But if they don't, the French just don't have enough units to keep their own territory. And because you'd now be adjacent to the French border, the only thing the British could attempt is attack you...

Do the Italians have enough guts to occupy the British in Egypt so the brits don't feel like repatriating Wavell ?

Now, of course, you could always roll a 1. Then, you as the German won't suddenly feel very healthy. You're not at any serious risks. But France 41 would then loom over you...

If Germany can get a 3-1 on the hex, they should attack, even in rain.

Italian high command had signed orders that the Graziani HQ should have been transported to Libya this impulse. For some reason this order never reached the fleet in La Spezia. An investigation on what happened is ordered. When il Duce, who is resting in his summer house, is informed of this debacle he just shrugs and say that these things happens and there is no rush in militarizing Libya. We are after all a peace loving nation so no need to provoke the militaristic, aggressive, nations France and England.

No Rail Movement.

Minor land movement is done in China, Italy and Belgium.

Germany orders a land attack on the imperialistic CW forces in Belgium. The attack strength is 37 against 11 in defence.

2-1 in odds with 36% chance of the odds changing to 3-1. I am not sure that picking the blitz table here is best. Germany has a loss unit in the attack and that there is a 50% chance, or risk, that the turn ends after this. No real chance whatsoever that there will be another German impulse this turn. I would hade to make this attack just to retreat the CW forces one hex.

I considered making another attack on France as well but I didn't want to give them the production bonus. That was the main reason that I ground struck the CW units instead of the French.

I truly want to destroy both those CW units so I decide to select the assault table.
