Naval surprise

Post by yvesp »

So, here is the situation:

The CW have 10 convoys in a zone, and a cruiser in the 4 box.
Italy has 1 sub in the 2 box and 1 sub in the 3 box.
Weather is fine.
This is not a surprise impulse ; no war declaration.

Search rolls:
CW 6
Italy 3 (modified : 1)

Italy finds the CW units, and choose to attack only the convoys.
So far, so good.

Lets work out the suprise points as I understand them
CW: 4 (higest box) + 3 (opponent unmodified roll) = 7
Italy: 3 (highest box) + 6 (opponent unmodified rol) = 9

Right ?

No. The game give 6 surprise points to Italy instaed of the 2 I come with.

Use this save, and chose the Cape St Vincent zone. Chose the rolls I indicated.

So who's right: me, or the game that give 6 surprise points to the axis ?

Wrong. You only calculate surprise based on the highest box in the combat instead of the highest box in the sea zone. Because the cruiser isn't in the combat, since the subs are only going after the convoys, the CW surprise is 0 for the box and 3 for the opponent's roll, and after subtracting that from the Italians 9, they do indeed have 6.

When in deadly doubt,
Run in little circles,
Wave your arms and shout."

Hum... I had always thought that it was "committed"... Silly me!
That will change how I move ships...

If it is any consolation, getting the surprise calculations correct was a nightmare to code. Just seeing your original post in this thread made my eye twitch.[;)]
