OOB Randomness

Post by pzgndr »

This may be challenging to implement, but something from TacOps that I always wanted was some way to have the OPFOR OOB randomly selected. Specifically, for those scenarios that had 8 versions (ie, regimental deployment 1-2-3 bn, 1 up 2 back, 2 up 1 back, 3 bn on line, and BTR versus BMP for each set), if the scenario could simply randomly select a version, the BLUFOR player would have to spend some time/space correctly identifying the threat and its deployment, and then maneuver accordingly. Each scenario version would have to be designed with different entry points and arrival times, but that's doable. The key is allowing a "master" version to randomly select which sub-version to use and withhold the enemy OOB information until the game ends. I think that would be cool. [8D]

Basically from where we are today, you would need to say build the player NATO force and initial setup. Then do any number of variations of enemy forces to your points above. Then when selecting scenarios there would need to be an option of random selection. If the names all had a tag like NSAS-A Time to Dance #1.scn and we used a tag to select based on the name I could see that working or make a new type of scenario launch/editor like a campaign where you could list the variant files (again like a camp) then select these new "random" scenarios from a new launch screen. That may actually be easier. Great idea. Now we just need to find folks who can make enough variants to do this.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

Again, once you have a base scenario with the OPFOR regiment coming on, it should be trivial to edit equipment and the entry points and arrival times for the battalions and save the scenario under a different name/number. The AI would do the rest maneuvering the forces toward the objectives.

Another nice feature TacOps had was an option to have another tank battalion added to the enemy OOB, and I think there was some randomness as to where and when it entered. So something like that would be nice. Since FCRS plays both sides, an option for a NATO tank company could also be considered. And to spice it up, there could be an option to make this random too, either extra tanks show up or they don't, and the player will just have to wait and see what happens. As if this game doesn't already provide enough surprises! [;)]
