This game has the worst save/load system i have ever seen!!!

Post by sanderz »

Having seemingly just lost a whole turn because of this awful save/load system i need to vent!!!

I did a custom save, but the next time you save (in the same turn) it just overwrites it so i don't think you can have different saves in the same turn??

I had run the turn but wanted to reload because i had forgotten to set the GER ships to evade. So i thought with a new turn i'd get another save - like i think you do if you just use the auto system - but seemingly not - it just overwrote the same file name. However there was the reload a previous turn option but of course i didn't have one because it had been overwritten. GRRRRRRRRRR

Why can't the game just have "save" screen like every other game ever. Why do you have to go to the "load" screen to do a custom save. And when at said screen why does the save game menu option not even show until you click on a save,

Now its very likely that this is all my own fault as the save/load system is so very user unfriendly i probably f'd up somehow.

Either way the save/load system is goddam awful, the worst i have ever seen in any game (and i've played a lot).

Phew,
rant over

If anyone has an idiots guide to how the save/load system is supposed to work, and how i can stop it overwriting my previous saves by giving it a unique file name every time i press the save button then i would be very grateful.

Thanks

PS : and before anyone asks, yes i am a prolific save scummer [:D]

Save system is cumbersome indeed, it is less user friendly in ageod games since cw2 - it is not well suited to have multiple saves in a turn. It is designed to easily roll back to previous turn without manually saving different copies of the same save game however. If you for whatever reason want to have multiple saves of the same game, this is what I do. I save a game. Then I minimize the game and manually copy save game folder from my documents\my games\EAW\Save games\"1914 start or whatever name you've given it" folder to a different location. Then I go back to the game and save under a different name. If I ever want to take a peek at old save game I moved away, I manually (from Windows copy it again to the save game folder in Windows).

P.S.

But, you do not have to save spam this game. If you are unhappy with something and want to reload the previous turn, do it within the game by roll 1 turn back button. The game save 3-12 previous turns depending on what you tell it in the options settings.

thanks for the info - i'll try that when i calm down [:D]

this is the first AGEOD game i've really tried to get into and they don't make it easy - there are so many little things that have already been posted that they don't seem that bothered about and just say "get used to it" - they (the devs) have used the system for years so its easy for them to say that

it seems from what you are saying they just reuse the same old outdated systems for each game and never really improve on anything - sitting on their laurels as the saying goes - they have such great wargame design if only they'd get someone fresh into the company to work on their UI/user friendliness their games would be awesome
