I feel bad for the Soviets having their army up front like that. They're going to take it on the chin this summer.

Where would a seasoned WIF player set the Soviets up?

The Axis really need to make this turn count. Its too early in the game to commit naval assets in support of the Greek campaign, so all attention is focused on land.

Just two ground strikes are ordered in this impulse - one against the out of supply Soviet army east of Memel and the other against the 1st Greek Mountain Corps.

The Soviet air force is massively out-numbered so close to East Prussia and so does not contest the hex.

The result is a 66% success for the Stuka, and being out of supply, this will reduce the Soviet defensive capability.

The equally well equipped sister aircraft successfully attacks the Greeks defending the mountain passes in front of Athens.

There are 5 attacks planned this impulse, against:

- the Greek Mountain corps defending the approaches to Athens
- a Soviet Motorised Corps south of the Pripyat Marshes
- a Soviet Tank Army east of Lvov
- the surrounded Soviets forces in Lithuania
- a lone Soviet cavalry unit on the coast west of Riga

Only in Lithuania do the Germans fly ground support.

The CW can reduce the odds in the Greek mountains (I brought no fighter cover [8|]) but will need to use a precious Sunderland to do so. The RAF declines the invitation.

The Soviets can bring aircraft to a number of hexes but in the south they are out-gunned by two German fighters and in the north, they are out-numbered in Lithuania and can barely alter the odds in Latvia. They too decline to provide support. This is the first impulse in what could be a very long turn....

So then - here goes:

First its the Greek Campaign. Its 3:1 no modifiers on the Assault table....

....what do you know? its another 6. The Greek defender is destroyed for no loss but all Axis forces are disorganised.

To the forests of Lithuania now. The odds are 5:1 +2 on the Blitz table...

...another 6(8). The Soviets lose two units - an Engineer and an Infantry Army, while the 4th Mechanised Army is shattered. I convert to a retreat on the basis that the Soviets cannot retreat and so is also destroyed. "Good kill" as Steiner would say in Cross of Iron.

The last attack in the north is that on the lone cavalry unit. Its a 7:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table...

...Wow. Random dice? Its a....drum roll....a 6(8)! Not sure why it was modified to an 8? But anyway, the Soviet unit is no more.

For the 4th attack the setting is the forest south of the Pripyat Marshes. It's 4:1 no modifiers but the Germans miscalculate by not having a Panzer Corps available - it will therefore be decided on the Assault table....

...its an 8. The Soviet 1st Motorised Army is destroyed but, vitally, the Germans are not disorganised. That was a lucky break..

And so to the final attack where once again the Germans have failed to bring sufficient Armour to the party. Its a 5:1 no modifiers on the Assault table....

...quite bizarre. Another 6! The Soviet 3rd Tank Army is no more and once again the Germans have not been disorganised. This has been a highly encouraging start to Barbarossa.

Greece is not looking great either, though at least there are two units in Athens and I can try and get the Royal Navy to intervene.

Edit: I've just realised I forgot to organise some German units with Rommel [8|]
