sub attacks

Post by steverodgers801 »

My opponent, japan, can place a sub in one of my harbor and be guaranteed at least one or two sub attacks a turn. I placed a sub on patrol in side of one of his harbors with out a single attack for five turns, unless the computer has lied to me for five turns and the harbor has no enemy ships, why don't I get any sub attacks

Steve you need to give us some more information. First what is the aggression rating of your skipper? What are the other characteristics? Did you recon the harbor, what were the results? Are there ships in harbor? What size is the harbor (in smaller ones ships "on a pier" can still be attacked)? Obviously your boat needs to have torpedoes. But a lot rests with the skipper. Hal

You won't actually get attacks off against ships disbanded in port (truly, in the harbor), unless you are doing a midget submarine attack.

There needs to be a TF in the hex (whether "in the port" or not) for attacks to happen.

Additionally, if your subs are well-detected they won't prosecute very many attacks or will be sighted by escorts before they get an attack off.

Lokasenna, I thought I read in the manual somewhere that a size three or under port a ship COULD be attacked in harbor anchored.... might be wrong however.

Section 9.3 of the manual:

Ships that are docked expend no Endurance unless they are attacked. Ships at a friendly port
with a current size of at least 3 may exist in the port separate of a TF in which case they will
maximize their repair capability at the expense of additional vulnerability to enemy attacks (this
is considered being at anchor). Ships docked or at anchor at a port with a current size of at
least 3 are immune to enemy submarine attacks.

Hrm. My game experience bears this out as meaning ships (in a TF) that are docked in a port of size 3+ are immune.

I have never, ever, ever seen a submarine attack a ship that was disbanded in a port. Anyone got evidence to the contrary?

I've seen mini-subs attack ships disbanded in port.

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life

I think minisubs work differently. I even figured out how to use them against a port! I think they may get to launch regular attacks against ship in the port if you have them sitting in the same hex, but to really get them to work correctly you need to do a midget sub carrier TF, set the destination as the target, and once there the carrier sub will launch the midget sub against the harbor. Like on Turn 1 of a full campaign how you see 4-5 messages about it at Pearl.

Me too, in PM, that's what caused me to look it up a few months ago and why I knew there was something about size 3...... PM was a size one at the time.

There is no limit on midget sub attacks by port size - it just becomes harder as the port gets bigger. Bigger port means antisubmarine netting and so forth. Midget subs can still penetrate the harbor and hit a docked ship. Run the December 7 turn lots of times if you want to see it happen.

In AndyMac's Ironman games the AI regularly sends minisub attacks against Allied ports.

Use some minefields, they are usually pretty nasty on submarines.

IJN subs are pretty nasty, a lot of them are really fast. Allies have some pretty slow subs at start, and some really bad commanders & experience.

well if you has a sad that enemy subs are in your base, mebbe you should defend your base.
- Lay mines in your base, w/ ACMs to maintain the minefields.
- Patrol your base w/ ASW TFs. Use 3-4 ships ASW TFs, or CVE Escort TFs w/ ASW torpedo-bomber groups.
- Provide air-ASW cover over your base.

If enemy subs are in your base, that's a sure sign that your defensive measures are inadequate. Use naval TFs to drive that sub out of your hex.
