Best way to learn this game?

Post by vaalen »

Greetings,

I am a long time wargamer. I have never played Harpoon though, and this fascinating game seems difficult to learn.

I really do want to learn this game, it is totally fascinating.

Can anyone suggest the best way to learn this game, for someone who has never played Harpoon?

I'd start with reading the Harpoon II manual, which includes a large "Guide to Naval Warfare", that can be found in pdf form online.

One day I need to tackle a closet or two and see if I still have that manual and strategy guide.

Also see Baloogan's videos and other stuff he has gathered together at baloogancampaign.com

Primarchx, any idea on where there is a good link to the guide to naval warfare from the old Harpoon Ii manual? I also seem to recall a series of strategy tactics guides called waypoint 360, does anyone recall whether these might be of use?

Waypoint was written by us years ago [:)]

Harpoon II manual will cover the broad stuff but game play is obviously different and the models definitely are.

I did find the Guide to Naval Warfare online and find it a good read for someone like me to learn some basic tactical concepts.

That along with the pen&paper Harpoon rule set and data annex is where I started 25 years ago. Before you know it you'll be collecting Norman Polmar...

check the baloogan tutorials on youtube, you'll learn a lot. I didn't play harpoon too but i think that if you read the manual, play the tutorials, see the tutorials on youtube and play some scenarios you'll learn a lot, is not necessary to read other games manuals.

That is where I started too ... naval battles on the floor of my parents garage!

Play the tutorials several time to get the hang of the keyboard commands and understanding of the basics. The primary thing to keep in mind is that you need to get command of the air to rule the waves (as it were). Enemy radars and bases are number 1 on your list of things to destroy first.
