The lowest throw was a three - there won't be much ground striking going on here!

North of Smolensk the lone Stuka gets at least some joy from his mission..

So we have four attacks this impulse:

1. Against a Communist Army north of Shanghai
2. Against Kharkov
3. A mistake against two Soviet units in the Pripyat Marshes [8|]
4. A risky attack north of Pskov...

Well we could well have the mother of all air battles on our hands.

The Soviets have decided to contest three of the attacks.

The first battle, north of Pskov, involves the entire fighter strength for both sides in the Northern sector.

The odds are in favour of the Germans by 8.8:7.5 but they only need one bomber through....

Round 1 (Allies to throw first)

15 - DA Germany decides to abort its bomber
15 - AA Germany aborts the Soviet front fighter

This edges out the German advantage to 8.8:7.0. The Soviets decide to stick it out for one more round.

Round 2

10 - Effectively no effect
3 - AX Germany decides to destroy the Soviet front fighter (the pilot survives)

The Soviets have little choice but to break off the battle...

The next battle is even 5.0:5.0. The whole attack has been a miscalculation, and one which will cost the Germans a Paratrooper. They therefore are just looking to get out of this air battle without further egg on their face...

A sign of things to come perhaps? This final battle sees the Soviets with the advantage 6.0:6.5. The Luftwaffe are stretched...

Round 1 (The Allies to throw first)

10 - DC The Germans clear through their bomber
2 - AX The Germans choose to destroy the Soviet fighter (the pilot survives)

The odds swing to the Germans 6.0:5.0 and so they stick around. The Russians have no choice but to stay around. They need to hold the city.

Round 2

4 - DX The Germans lose their front fighter (the pilot survives)
19 - AX PX The Germans destroy the Soviet front fighter (the pilot is killed)

The odds move out to 5.5:3.0. The Soviets stick around for one more go...

Round 3

5 - AA The German front fighter aborts
16 - DX The Soviet front bomber is shot down (the pilot survives)

The odds actually improve - although still in the German's favour. The Soviets stick it out 5.0:3.0.

Round 4

5 - AA The last German fighter is aborted
10 - AC The Soviet bomber is cleared through. The Soviets made the right decision

And so to the land combat. First up its China where the Japanese have a 7:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table....

...8. The Communist Army is destroyed.

Back to the Soviet Union now and three of the most uninspiring attack ever!

Firstly the disastrous 1:2 no modifiers in the Pripyat Marshes on the Assault table. The Germans have only had 1 or 2 10's. If ever there was a time.....

....10!! What a get out of jail that was! The attackers are disorganised and lose a Militia but they don't care about that. Both Soviet Armies are destroyed.... Wow...

So now we move north. The Germans have the advantage of the Blitz table but its 3:2 no modifiers....

...9! The god of dice is smiling on the Wehrmacht! The Soviets lose a unit and the survivors retreat. All units are disorganised but that is a small price for the Germans to pay - that could have been a whole lot worse. The Germans do not advance into the hex in case they become out of supply.

The last attack is a 3:1 +1 on the Assault table against Kharkov....

....5(6) The Attackers are all disorganised and the Soviets lose one unit. Kharkov is held.

One attack in China this impulse as Mao and his Communists attack a Japanese Militia and ART caught out in the open. Fractional odds increase the attack to a 3:1 no modifiers on the Assault Table....

...its a 5. One unit each is lost. The Japanese have little choice but to lose the ART.

The Japanese have really lost control in China....

Just two attacks this impulse:

Kharkov and the Philippines.

In the Ukraine the odds are 5:1 +2 on the Assault table. The throw was only a 4 but the +2 was key in destroying both defenders and allowing the Germans to take the Soviet Union's 4th City.

For the Soviet Union the North and Centre are seemingly being stabilised. The lack of air re-bases each turn really hurts the Germans. I have some top quality aircraft I just cannot get near the front line!
