Advice on how to ID a sub

Does anyone have advice on how best to identify a submerged sub? I'm playing through Operation Brass Drum and detected a sub. I need to determine whether it's an Iranian diesel sub (in which case I'll fire on it) or a Russian sub (in which case I'll track it but try not to anger Mr. Putin). Any suggestions? I've got a good lock on her position with passive sonobuoys dropped nearby but an ID seems much harder to get.

It'll take a while, do you have a helicopter with dipping sonar?

Yes. I've been mostly using sonobuoys but dipping sonar is available. Is that better for being able to get an ID?

Yeah - that could prove a little tricky as they both operate Kilo class submarines - while identifying a Kilo isn't too hard once you pick them up - identifying a unique hull to identify nationality could take some work...

Thanks for the advice! I'm pretty amazed it's even possible (in real life). Must take a lot of painstaking listening to make it happen. I'll just keep tracking and listening and see if I can eventually get an ID.

If you need an ID ASAP, there is another possibility - dropping a torpedo in the vicinity, but far enough that its seeker won't lock on. Submarine will go deep and flank upon detection and with its greatly increaced noise you should get ID very quickly if zou have sonobuoys nearby. Drawbacks include the need for that torpedo for an actual engagement, possible hostility from that sub, or, if it's something antique with bad passive sensors, it may not even detect the torpedo and won't react altogether.

Which you would never actually do in real life unless of course you wanted to start a war.....

Probably not what you are trying to find out, but if you sink it, it will definitely get identified. [:D]
