Sudden loss of combat animations

I'm playing Scenario 2 and the date is 7/42. This evening all the animations are gone in the combat scenes. The scene appears, but torpedoes that hit from subs don't show up on the screen, explosions don't appear during naval combats or on air raids, etc. The sound is there, but no animation. I've tried restarting the game (not the scenario) with no luck. Anyone seen this before?

I have seen naval combats where the ships were invisible. It was the first combat replay after I did a fresh install and was watching Dec 7 versus the AI.

I assumed there was some problem with the install, so I just deleted the game's directory tree, and reinstalled the game. Haven't seen the problem since.

I have had this happen, too many programs running...I quit all other programs and restarted the game, the problem always goes away for me. Wrong forum I think...

I have the problem when planes straff...

I get this problem any time I tab out and back in. Or any time I make another program the active window when running in window mode.
