A rambling introduction

Post by JimboJangles »

Hello everybody! First off, many thanks to the team at Matrix for putting this new version of Pacific War on the web, and for hosting these forums. My gratitude goes to those contributors from the community who have helped so many players in the past and present with their insightful comments and analysis of the game's mechanics and best strategies. Of course Gary Grigsby created the game, and none of this would be possible without his genius in creating such an epic game with such limited hardware.

Sorry for rambling, my name is Jim, I've been lurking in the board here for a week or two after downloading the new Matrix edition of Pacwar. I played the SSI version a little when I was in my teens, but I didn't have the patience for it. Now I'm in my mid 30's, and I thoroughly enjoy the slower pace and depth of planning. I don't actually own a pc currently, I play Pacwar with a dosbox type app on my Galaxy Note 2.

I first saw this game in 1995, when a Swiss friend of the family came to spend a summer with my family in California. He was in his teens, and loved strategy games. Because they were hard to find in Switzerland (this was in '95), he was ecstatic when he found the 20 Wargame Classics bundle at a local game store. He stayed with us for another 6 or 7 weeks after that and spent much of that time playing either Pacwar or Panzer General on my old 486 33mhz AST pc. I enjoyed Panzer General at the time, but couldn't get into Pacwar, it just seemed unnecessarily complicated. Now I see what I was missing.

I am currently on my third game, Campaign 41 against Jap AI, and my first with full control of all HQs from the start. The first two games were Campaign 41 as allies, in which I never played past March 43. I'm hoping to be ready to play some pbem soon. Basically just wanted to say nice to meet y'all and I look forward to being part of the Pacwar community.

Glad you're trying pacwar again. And glad you're interested in pbem. Its a whole new world. I'm sure you'll find an opponent when you're ready.
