Well, I'm now watching on German TV the offial opening of the Oktoberfest. One of the most important events of the year, where I'm concerned...

Seriously njoy the festivities, although when I was in Germany it was suprrising the locals I met, a small sample I grant you where all pilsner guys and gals... not a porter or stinkie dark beer to be found... now in England, well to my delight I found London Porter.. at least I think thatwas the name.. wow.. truely remarkable beer brewed in the London Brewery as of 08

Tssss....[&o] I'm leaving on Monday for a week of Oktoberfest...

On Wednesday, we've got a table with the family out of Austria and on Friday some friends from the Netherlands are there too.

It's called Oktoberfest because it always ends on the first Sunday of October or October 3rd (whichever is the latest date). It always runs for at least 16 days before that...

And they don't have Pilsner there, but so called "Märzen Festbier". These type are beers which are brewed in Germany to be available for a short time (you can't keep them for later drinking. After three months they usually start to loose some of the taste already if you buy them in a bottle) and have a slightly larger alcohol percentage and have a somewhat sweeter taste than Pilsner.

And don't think the place is only about drinking beers. Sure, the 13 "grosse Bierzelte" are the important part of the Oktoberfest, but there are all kind of nice things for non beerdrinkers too. There is a huge Winetent, some very good coffee and cake tents, a huge fair and all kind of smaller eat and drinktents too.

I found it sad, and interesting, that my family in Eminden,sp?, fought in WW1 and preumable WW2 against my American and presumably English cousins and relations.. makes the horrors of war that much more horrid. Came to point at the WW1 monument near where my mothers grandmothers home was. Mom now 90, heard stories from her grannie growing up about how grand mom, my Great grand mom, would ride her bike to the Rhine and such. Lovely countryside near Frieburg and some truly stunning architecture. For the folks in the US we have no 1000 year old Castle ruins or 2000 year old roman wall remains.... I found all this great fun and a real treat.
I stood inside a ruined church, inside a ruined Castle on a huge battlement. In the distance I could see a modern wind farm... fantastic stuff. I can easily see that this high place was a military stronghold in the region for many centuries. no idea the names, sorry...
Do enjoy the festivities and return to our little forums when you can!
Tip back one for me and Ill be there in spirit rejoicing in the festivities, although here in Colorado our beloved avs are starting their season, that is my Octoberfest....

I know what you mean. I had an uncle (from the Dutch part of the family) fighting on a Dutch ship during the war and another uncle fighting in the Sturmpioniere in Stalingrad (from the Austrian side of the family).
