My daughter complains a lot about the dinosaurs and neckbeards found in the male gaming community.
She has been playing computer games of every sort since she stopped drooling on the keyboard and
is in her mid 20's now. She regularly complains of the attitude displayed by certain of her male
playmates and from what I have seen of it she has some justification. I never thought much of the values
of certain gamers and do what I can to stay out of the "dinosaur" category. They abound in certain areas
where PreCambrian conservative thinking is dominant.

What is a "dinosaur" and a "neckbeard"? And if she is in her mid 20's, then I would assume they are not "playmates". They are probably potential "mates", just take the word "play" off the front and maybe you will understand your daughter a little better. Unless you want your daughter to grow up an "old maid" (to speak colloquially). But I'm not an expert on women, I'm a bit of an expert on parents though (maybe).

And my question stands, what is a "dinosaur" is that a person who will become "extinct"? And is a "neckbeard" the vernacular opposite? I guess I'm not up on the latest pejorative terminology of the young.

Anyway Dan, I suspect I may receive no serious reply from you (as seems to often be the case) so I'll assume you are either running away with your tail between your legs or else you are being "charitable" toward me. You don't even need to tell me which it is. You can just leave me spinning like an electron if you want.

Hey, that's an idea! I'll be an "electron" Who wants to be a "proton" and who wants to be a "neutron"? I will be an "electron" because my head is spinning and I am orbiting a giant nucleus called Danlongman and inside that nucleus is his daughter who is one type of particle. Who would like to be the "Supercollider" and break that particle inside out into the world where all us electrons are?

Actually I had something to do away from the screen for a few hours!! Wonders never cease.
I hadn't really thought about you spinning like an electron in orbit about my giant nucleus.
I have been informed my nucleus is "adequate" but not giant.
Why I should be "running away with [my] tail between my legs" is quite beyond me unless your
"nucleus" is in fact giant.

Anyway dinosaurs are just that: those who feel that girls can't play chess or get dirty
or other masculine pursuits. Neckbeards...well they are a new/old phenomena: ever adolescent males
of poor grooming and demeanour, typically inhabiting mother's basements and possessed of a sense of unearned
male supremacy and entitlement. Among other things.
Playmates are your mates you play with....unless you had other ideas, unseemly as they may be.

I have Battle Academy and also Panzer Korps but have done very little with either of them I've always been particular to operational level games rather than tactical. I'm fascinated by Strategic level games but have trouble getting into them. Monster operational level games with a strategic scope have always been my sweet spot.

I also seem to harbor a prejudice against the current fad of using 3D unit sprites instead of traditional counters. The rock/paper/scissors formula for resolving battles, while based on the relative efficacy of different types of units fighting each other, just doesn't appeal to me either. I keep buying the games though... but lose interest after a few hours play.

Not to dispute the originality or validity of this approach to game design. It just doesn't resonate with me in comparison with games like WiTP or WiTE that introduce all the micromanagement that requires a computer to process for any realistic possibility of actually playing such a monster. I tried to hard to play SPI's "Terrible Swift Sword" but never got beyond the 1st day. Then came John Tiller's Talonsoft "Gettysburg" and I was in gaming heaven at last. Things just got better with his HPS "Campaign Gettysburg" that introduced the strategic aspects of that campaign with huge maps and linked battles. Despite all the many, many games I have owned... Campaign Gettysburg remains my absolute single favorite... my idea of a perfect wargame.

All of that said... I'm perfectly willing to give Battle Academy a shot. I fired it up a few minutes ago and am downloading the latest patch to get current.

Rhonda, do you have any interest in Battle Academy. It's obviously something of an obsession of mine.

I won't mention Steel Panthers, because even though I loved to play it until post Win 98SE ruined the experience to some extent, the thing is, every time I have played it multi player, it's been a coin toss experience. One person usually picks an entirely wrong force and they get slaughtered (which by the way is my feelings on DYO in ASL). The Mega Campaigns are about the only thing I still spend effort on now (and they seem to have ruined the arty function somehow with recent OSs).

I try to stick to games with rapid turn speed as my health looks very dimly on sitting for longer than 30 minutes (watching movies at the theatre often wrecks me).

So many games I might play, so little time time to adequately get into some of them, and often they just miss something if not vs a human.

I've really become active with Hearthstone due to the fast speed of getting into and out of a match. Plus, it might be the first time I have seen a free to play game, where the free aspect was actually done correctly.

I think too many of my monster wargame purchases of the past 10 years have been the result of out of control nostalgia and me missing the late 70s.

My recent acquisition of the Android release of Russian Front from Hunted Cow was I think my last ditch attempt to find an honest to god wargame on a tablet, that was both easy to play, and yet looks like an actual board game wargame. I've been lately wondering if my obsession with even tablets might be just crazy tech envy though.

All of the persons I myself at least have encountered, that possessed undesirable traits, haven't really matched that description.

Games is games though. I think if you mash up the entire market, and then just crunch numbers, yeah, it might not be so odd that there are statistically more female gamers than male gamers. Even if some niches have almost none at all.

Like I alluded to earlier, there are a lot of things you won't find many men indulging. But men tend to not like some things. Gee I wonder why

I didnt know what to expect when I started this post but am certainly more enlightened on females and wargaming and to have such a happy outcome between mrs wargamer and rhonda it brought a tear to my eye. Thanks for all the contributions.

I'll give it a try. Have to wait till my data cap resets though. I have used up my allotment for the month and am currently throttled back to the point where even reading email is taking forever and I couldn't even do the Battle Academy patch

It's tough being out here in the desert. Hughesnet satellite works for me but my connection is nothing compared to what you all probably experience. It is also my primary link to the world as I have no television and only one reliable radio station with a good signal. Cell phone service isn't all that reliable either.

I've got an extra 10 gig after 2 am, but I used all that up downloading a "Warhammer: Dawn of War II" game that I got on the cheap. These days the size of game downloads has increased to the point where I can only buy and download maybe two games a month. Hughesnet has a free downloader app that will auto download after midnight at their convenience, but I've had trouble getting it to work with most game sites.

The other problem is that running the computer at night has to be done off my batteries and with Arizona undergoing our "monsoon season" I've had to deal with many cloudy afternoons that have really cut into my solar power generation so running "late night" requires me to pretty much shut everything down during the day (other than refrigeration) to insure a full charge for later use. I need more solar panels!

Ah... the joys of being totally "off grid" in the high desert wilderness [:)]

How many of you boys enjoy cross stitching? Just curious

I have found cross stitching pretty interesting when I was a kid, but I was very poor and couldn't afford all the stuff for doing it. Somehow it put me off forever.
I did sculpting, glass painting and some other handicraft, though.
Nowadays I'm just drawing.
In 2012 ago I went to a florist school. It was kinda cool. I had to resign during the first semester because I had a lot of work.
After I re-started the school, it turned out that in opposition to previous semester no one in the class is actually interested in floritstics or in handicraft in general, so in the end I quit it because it was rather pointless without meeting other bohemians and without real employment prospects.

One could argue that pixel art is digital cross stitching, though .

I don't know any girl that isn't a gamer though. And I know of a lot of female role gamers. But, I have yet to meet any women that want to play table top miniatures.

One thing that makes me sick about these cargo cult feminists is how they consider it okay to demonize and politicize secondary sexual traits. Lots of them are in fact fanatical servants of the fashion-cosmetic industrial complex. Which is pretty absurd considering how oppressive it is, especially towards women. Some stuff like spreading anorexia actually goes beyond oppressive and into out-rightly murderous category.

Yeah, we should all remove our secondary sexual traits as "grooming". For even better grooming we should get piercings and facial tattoos. To reach pinnacle of grooming we should also put a bone through our noses.
