Thailand April 19, 1944

I believe I missed a real opportunity in Thailand and Indochina when I did not move my air support and engineers by troop tranport. Had I been more on my game I might have already have taken Hanoi and Haiphong. As it is, he now has a regiment in Hanoi that made my very useful chineese unit surrender.

Due to strategic moves to Hue my AV there just jumped from about 150 to over 500 and he is moving his regiment back to Tourane. Another division was moving by strat move and it got close to Vinh so I am simply moving that division to take on the small unit blocking the main road.

I will bombard Saigon tomorrow so it can finally be determined the composition of forces against me in that base.

This area is being turned into a backwater pretty quickly. I do not expect much interesting to be happening west of Hong Kong soon.

Sumatra & Malaya April 19, 1944


My question about Palembang and overstacking was answered by NJP as he is moving units into the swamp to the southeast of the city. I am thinking that might alleviate one problem but cause another. If he does not support those troops with anti-aircraft I can simply bomb them and allow his supplies to be drained by repairing disablements.

NJP has so many guns at Palembang the only practical solutions are starvation and naval bombardment. I think he has naval guns at Palembang so I will have to figure out what range to set at and such but it can be done rather easily. Right now the priority and almost all of the BB's are near Luzon. However, I do still have a British BB and BC at Batavia I could use.

As for Singapore, I see 2 units to the base north of the city. I will roll up there with 2 armored units and the division I currently have deployed and at that point will figure out what to do.

Take Down of the Phillipines April 20, 1944

The amphib invasion goes in as expected at Baler with 70 squads disabled in the division and 1/3 of the tanks disabled for the 3rd USMC tank bn. Those plus the paratrooper units are immediately moving west.

I have decided to push it hard and am going to land 100K troops at the doorstep of Manila at Batangas. NJP has been pretty reserved with his air forces and I think Clark Field should be down for bombers for a week or so. So, I am putting everything I have on Batangas and covering with all the carriers I have.

The CVE's are moving to Batangas this turn along with the 33rd infantry division. Next turn at various intervals the rest of the units should arrive and I will have my main CV's in to cover the invasion as well. Delivering AV support to Batangas as it is level 2 I already have P47's in escort above the base.

Within 5-6 days I can have major units moving into Manila from both the south and the north and that will allow the armor to finish off Northern Luzon. He has some troops at Aparri and some at San Fernando. Once the northern half is secure and building for the Formosa invasion they can concentrate on breaking down Manila.

Within about 8 days the HQ's should start arriving for the manila assault.

I think if I can take Bataan that I can bombard Manila with my battleships. If this is the case then it this will not last very long.

Takedown of the Phillipines April 21, 1944

It seems like any air defense over Luzon has fallen apart. There are no longer any recon aircraft lighting up my task forces.

2 divisions are on the move to enter Manila from the south in 2-3 turns. A majority of the forces I have moved from Java will be unloading at Batangas this turn.

An armor unit will move into the base north of Manila next turn and be ready to move south to open the rest of the island.

I am going to risk a bombardment of Manila this coming turn as that is the only working airfield I am aware of at this time.

NJP has some transports moving between Saigon and China but that will come to a close shortly. I think it might be time to go see how much damage I can do to that shipping that is around there.

Takedown of the Phillipines April 22, 1944

The test bombardment of Manila goes in without any issues. There were a few surface boats that I was surprised to find. I wonder if my search just isnt looking for single ships or by coincidence these guys were trying to evacuate at the same time my battleships were sailing into the harbor. Now there isnt an airfield of significant size that isnt damaged at least partly.

I believe that leaving Clark Field without AA was the sucker punch that took down Manila. I am looking north and it appears he does not have the islands between Luzon and Formosa defended. Batan Island is a lvl 2 airfield yet has nothing on it.

If NJP chose to sir robin in certain places I think he will find it to be at a disadvantage. I am starting to check out southern Formosa for troops and will be looking to the small islands to the east. I can flood all these small islands with engineers and start building airfields. It will allow me faster access to taking down the home islands.

Up until now it was not really part of the plan but I may actually end up doing an amphibious assault directly onto the islands. That is likely 6-9 months away and getting quite a bit ahead of myself however.

Back to fantasy reality... There are over 70K troops unloaded at Batangas with over 2000AV. Division(s) will move into Manila from the south tomorrow. The bombardment looked bad for NJP as 2 old slow battleships killed over 400 troops. Another set of battleships goes in this turn. The AKE's are arriving at Batangas next turn. I have nearly 200 Fighter CAP over the base and considering the condition of Clark Field and Manila Airfield due to the previous and continuing bombardments, there is no reason no to set up next door. Also, Batangas is a level 3 port and San Jose is lvl 1 and not cutting it at 200 replenishment per ship per day. The AKE's were getting sucked dry.

So, after this turn between 1/2 and 2 bombardments per day will be possible on Manila. Throw in stuff on top and hit with over 2000 AV including piles and piles of tanks and... The only thing I do not have going for me is that almost none of my troops with the exception of HQ's are prepped for Manila. And I dont really want to prep them for Manila because they are either prepped for primary targets like Guam and associated islands or in the case of the armor, I want to target it for Formosa after I take Manila down. If manila is trouble I can convert those over and start at 25% which is a small start. I would be really SHOCKED if Manilla is that much of a problem reading between 30-40K troops with almost no armor.

Tomorrow troops will enter the city and I will do a bombardment to get the nature of what I am up against. Within 3-4 days the HQ's will be on the ground and I will likely be ready or nearly ready for a direct attack. Depending upon the outcome I will either finish off Manila or move some armor and other units north to secure Northern Luzon.

NJP mentioned something about a Maginot line and I replied that I loved them, it worked great for the French!! Considering the relative lack of resistance at Luzon I believe he has set one up somewhere forward. Although I dont have much more forward to go :]

When I go after Formosa it is my plan to use the clear terrain to my advantage and focus on carpet bombing and fleet bombardments. We shall see how that goes. We are probably at least a month out from that but my pace is above what I guessed it would be.

For kicks and grins I fueled up the main carrier fleets and threw them toward the northwest where he is carrying on some sort of operations near Hainan.

We are almost to the point of the game where carriers are not necessary anymore.

The bombardment of Manila reveals 200-300 AV on site. I brought a bazooka to a safety scissors party...

I had caught sightings of carriers up in the northwest near Hainan and I knew he had some surface forces up there. Given the absolute overkill I brought to Manila and the lack of air support needed to finish up the landings I shot 2 of my main carrier groups up north almost along the shore of Hainan.

The entire KB was up in the area. NJP did not have his carrier planes set to strike as he said that trying to hit a carrier group with over 200 hellcats cap was suicide. My guess is that he hoped I would hit from long range and lose the fighters due to fatigue. My plan involved getting close enough that some of his CAP would be farther away in flight times than my strikes. It worked.

The first attack took the regiment down by about 20 AV. The good news for me is that I have 2 divisions plus lots more artillery on the way and will arrive within 3 days to take down Saigon.

South of Hainan April 24, 1944...

NJP says his ships did not follow orders. A collision from an encounter with a Escort fleet is probably better than a torpedo hit would have been. The Yorktown needs work.

Didnt get any hits this turn and dont really want to push it with the Yorktown damaged so the ships will be heading south and then east to Manila. I should have some engineer amphibious landings ready within a few days so the ships can cover that. In 1-2 weeks I hope to be looking at an assault on Hainan. Next time I approach the island I will be better prepared for surface combat. Sent some groups into the pile he has there so we shall see what comes of it.
